THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS USING CONVENTIONAL AND SABERMETRIC BASEBALL STATISTICS FOR PREDICTING MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WIN PERCENTAGE VICTORIA DECESARE SPRING 2016 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in Science with honors in Statistics Reviewed and approved* by the following: Andrew Wiesner Lecturer of Statistics Thesis Supervisor David Hunter Department Head of Statistics Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT Major League Baseball is dominated by statistical analysis; one cannot watch a baseball game on the television without hearing and seeing a plethora of statistics such as batting average, runs batted in, earned run average, and the list goes on. In addition to these popular stats that most people are familiar with, there are several, more complex baseball statistics – known as “sabermetric” statistics – that have been developed over the past few decades that seek to evaluate players and the game more scientifically and comprehensively. However, with all of these stats available, it is easy to get caught up in the data and overlook the main goal of MLB teams: to win games. With this in mind, the goal of this research is to explore some of the numerous baseball statistics available, both the traditional and modern ones, and observe which ones are truly the best at predicting wins. Encompassing this, is it better to use the more complex methods in analyzing how teams win, or does it hold true that “less is more”? This research seeks to answer these questions and to provide a unique perspective for fans and managers alike when trying to make use of the ever-growing world of baseball data. -

Abstract: Major League Baseball, a professional baseball league in the US and Canada, is one of the most popular sports leagues in North America. Partially because of its popularity and the wide availability of data from games, baseball has become the subject of significant statistical and mathematical analysis. Pitch analysis is especially useful for helping a team better understand the pitch behavior it may face during a game, allowing the team to develop a corresponding batting strategy to combat the predicted pitch behavior. We apply several common machine learning classification methods to PITCH f/x data to classify pitches by type. We then extend the classification task to prediction by utilizing features only known before a pitch is thrown. By performing significant feature analysis and introducing a novel approach for feature selection, moderate improvement over former results is achieved. 1 INTRODUCTION literature. For example, Weinstein-Gould (Weinstein- Gould, 2009) examines pitching strategy of major Baseball is one of the most popular sports in North league pitchers, specifically determining whether or America. -

Rigidity of Microsphere Heaps
ABSTRACT HOANG, PHUONG. Supervised Learning in Baseball Pitch Prediction and Hepatitis C Diagnosis. (Under the direction of Hien T. Tran.) Machine learning is so ubiquitous nowadays that one probably uses it multiple times during the day without realizing it. For example, it is used in web search engines to improve efficiency, by email providers to identify junk emails, and in voice recognition, among others. Machine learning is a powerful tool that can be used to analyze large amount of data to make actionable predictions. Since machine learning uses algorithms that iterate on data, the quality and quantity of training data are important factors for accurate predictions. In particular, the data available for baseball pitch prediction is huge, millions of observations (pitches) each containing more than fifty features. However, the prediction task restricts researchers to working only with the less than ideal features that were measured before the target pitch is thrown. In addition, the presence of noise in pitch type labels makes it even harder to train classifiers. Meanwhile, the dataset for Hepatitis C is fairly small with less than two hundreds observations and 20 features. This disadvantage prevents researchers from removing observations with low quality when building reliable diagnosis models. Hence, prediction problems in the presence of missing features are pervasive in machine learning. This thesis focuses on a number of classification methods and other machine learning tools, and tailor them to address the above issues specifically. First, in the pitch prediction problem, unlike the current method which suggests a static feature selection algorithm for each pitcher, we propose a novel dynamic feature selection procedure that is shown to be more adaptive for each pitcher in each count. -
