Jeff Kirkendall’s Thoughts For The Month Column Thoughts, Opinions, Reviews, Commentary & More! Hello and Welcome! My name is Jeff Kirkendall and I'm an independent filmmaker and actor from the Upstate New York area. This is the section of the Very Scary Productions website where I write about topics related to independent filmmaking, digital video production, acting, movies in general, horror movies in particular, my own indie movies, as well as anything and everything related or in between. I decided to create this commentary page because I find that I often come across things that either interest me, excite me, intrigue me, or maybe just bug me. Any topic related to movies and cinema is fair game, from the most mainstream to the most controversial. For example I'll often read about movie projects that I have a strong interest in or opinion on, for one reason or another. This page gives me a forum to discuss these things. It's all about discussion and furthering understanding of our pop culture. Bottomley* Media and Cultural Studies, Department of Communication Arts, University of Wisconsin Madison, 6117 Vilas Hall, 821 University Avenue, Madison, WI 53706, USA In the 1980s, the major record labels in the United States and the United Kingdom publicly confronted consumers over the private copying of music onto blank cassette tapes. Industry trade groups, such as the Recording Industry Association of America and the British Phonographic Industry, mounted publicity campaigns combatting this practice of ‘home taping’, and, in addition, took legal action and lobbied governments for new copyright legislation. They condemned the practice as piracy, even though private, non commercial copying was predominantly legal. In a significant precursor to the digital file sharing battles of the 1990s and 2000s, fans and musicians widely objected to these attempts at media control, often through highly creative responses. This article examines these anti home taping campaigns as a historical conjuncture that reveals some of the ways content firms defend themselves against new media technologies, while also illustrating the complexity and diversity that exist within media industries like ‘the recording industry’ that are too often falsely presented as singular, homogenous groups. This analysis raises important questions about media production, labor, and creativity, in particular how the creative work of audiences is culturally discounted and copyright law is used to define creativity in highly restrictive ways. -

Commenting on the duo’s approach to songwriting, Marco says “we used to try to make it as retro sounding as possible, but in America we get lumped in with The Killers, Bloc Party and Babyshambles. It’s not as easy as you think to sound uncool. It all backfired and we started getting critical acclaim. The strange thing is that when The Wolfmen started we were listening to old Northern Soul and the Velvet Underground and glam rock and that is what it is a mixture of. A lot of people our age say, ‘Oh no, it’s not hip enough.’ I believed them for about five minutes and then after playing it for a bunch of 17 year olds they said it sounded great – they couldn’t care less about people’s ages and nor do we. -

2 Interview ~ 2005 SO WHO IS MARK ALLEYNE? And what does he do? What colour socks does he wear? Well, if Ant fans have been paying attention to the recent Ant Remasters releases, they will know he’s responsible for bringing us a fantastic looking set of CDs, presented in a rather nifty red box. Last year we spoke to Marco Pirroni and Andi Vaughan and it seemed only natural to pin down the third and final member of the team behind the most exciting Ant releases for over 10 years. You were a roadie for the Ants and the Monochrome Set. When was this? I didn’t roadie for The Ants. I roadied for a post-Ants band John [Bivouac] Beckett and Mark [Kid] Ryan put together, round about 1981 ~ 83, and then The Mono- chrome Set 1983 ~ 85. I should probably point out that The Monochrome Set would never have admitted to having anything as vulgar as a ‘roadie’. I was their ‘travelling companion’. I think they saw me as some kind of precariously tempered, shoddily turned-out ‘batman’. How did you become a roadie? Early in ‘81 I was designing a poster for some theatre group or other and was recom- mended a printer in Covent Garden. I pitched up there and was discussing the job with the print shop owner, whom I thought looked vaguely familiar. I was pleased as he seemed to know his stuff, which was pretty useful - because I had very little idea of the technical side of print. The poster was quite funny - it had cherubs hurling atomic bombs about, I remember.
