Mr. Mauro Moretti, who was previously the Amminstratore Delegato (CEO) of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), the Italian railway infrastructure manager -and currently President of the UIC Infrastructure Forum at international level- is appointed as the new Amministratore Delegato Innocenzo Cipolletta Mauro Moretti (CEO) of the Italian railways FS Group. They are succeeding Elio Catania who is leaving the Italian Railways Group. UIC conveys its sincere congratulations to Mr. Cipolletta and Mr. Moretti for theses appoint- ments and many thanks to Mr. Elio Catania for his action in UIC. Information session for representatives from Russian railways at UIC HQ A group of 25 representati- ves from Russian railways participating to a study trip in France visited the UIC Headquarters in Paris on Monday 28th August. Members of this delegation were general directors, senior managers and engi- 1 neers from the Russian rail- L L L way companies and a series of rail- way organisations. The represented in particular JSC Russian Railways (RZD), October Railways (Saint- Petersburg), Oural SA, VNIIAS (Ministère), and cooperating compa- nies as Radioavionika, etc. This information session on UIC role and activities was opened by UIC Chief Executive Luc Aliadière. By wel- coming the delegation, Luc Aliadière underlined the promising perspectives resulting from Russian railways' mem- bership in UIC and from the enhanced cooperation between RZD and UIC in a series of strategic cooperation issues: development of Euro-Asian corridors, partnership in business, technology and research, training, etc. -

INDIAN RAILWAYS SCHEDULE OF DIMENSIONS 1676mm Gauge (BG) REVISED, 2004 SCHEDULE OF DIMENSIONS-1676mm, GAUGE SHEDULE OF DIMENSIONS-1676MM GAUGE Schedule of Dimensions for Indian Railways, 1676mm Gauge Dear Sir/Dear Sirs, With their circular letter No. 735-W. of 1922, the Railway Board issued a Schedule of Maximum, Minimum and Recommended Dimensions to be observed on all 1676mm gauge Railways in India. In that Schedule, certain dimensions of the previous schedule of the year 1913 were modified with the object of permitting the use of enlarged rolling stock. 2. The Schedule of Dimensions of 1922 contained two distinct sections, namely, a schedule of "Maximum and Minimum Dimensions" which was considered to enable the proposed larger vehicles to run with about the same degree of safety as that which was previously obtained on the older Railways with existing stock, and a schedule of "Recommended Dimensions" intended to provide approximately the same clearances from fixed structures for the future larger vehicles as the 1913 schedule gave for existing vehicles. 3. In their circular letter No. 232-Tech.dated the 8th February, 1926, the Railway Board gave instructions that the Recommended Dimensions given in the 1922 Schedule were to be observed on important Railways in all new works and alterations to existing works. These orders were modified in letter No. 232-Tech. of the 26th April, 1926, which allowed a relaxation in the case of certain recommended dimensions, the adoption of which would involve heavy expenditure in remodeling works. 4. In 1929, it was found desirable further to amend the Schedule of 1922 in order to introduce certain improve- ments in the light of experience gained since it was issued, and to provide the clearances required by electric traction equipment on lines which were likely to be electrified in the future. -

There are several safety concerns associated with operating passenger and freight trains on shared-use rail corridors (SRC). Adjacent track accident (ATA) is one of the most important concerns. ATA mainly refers to a train accident scenario where a derailed equipment intrudes adjacent tracks, causing operation disturbance and potential subsequent train collisions on the adjacent tracks. Other ATA scenarios include collisions between trains on adjacent tracks (raking), turnouts and railroad crossings. -

XII. The Statistical Battle for the Population of Greek Macedonia by Iakovos D. Michailidis Most of the reports on Greece published by international organisations in the early 1990s spoke of the existence of 200,000 “Macedonians” in the northern part of the country. This “reasonable number”, in the words of the Greek section of the Minority Rights Group, heightened the confusion regarding the Macedonian Question and fuelled insecurity in Greece’s northern provinces.1 This in itself would be of minor importance if the authors of these reports had not insisted on citing statistics from the turn of the century to prove their points: mustering historical ethnological arguments inevitably strengthened the force of their own case and excited the interest of the historians. Tak- ing these reports as its starting-point, this present study will attempt an historical retrospective of the historiography of the early years of the century and a scientific tour d’horizon of the statistics – Greek, Slav and Western European – of that period, and thus endeavour to assess the accuracy of the arguments drawn from them. For Greece, the first three decades of the 20th century were a long period of tur- moil and change. Greek Macedonia at the end of the 1920s presented a totally different picture to that of the immediate post-Liberation period, just after the Balkan Wars. This was due on the one hand to the profound economic and social changes that followed its incorporation into Greece and on the other to the continual and extensive population shifts that marked that period. As has been noted, no fewer than 17 major population movements took place in Macedonia between 1913 and 1925.2 Of these, the most sig- nificant were the Greek-Bulgarian and the Greek-Turkish exchanges of population under the terms, respectively, of the 1919 Treaty of Neuilly and the 1923 Lausanne Convention. -

This report presents the results of an analysis of the impact that international freight traffic barriers have on logistics, transit potential, and development of transport corridors traversing EAEU member states. The authors of EDB Centre for Integration Studies Report No. 49 maintain that, if current railway freight rates and Chinese railway subsidies remain in place, by 2020 container traffic along the China-EAEU-EU axis may reach 250,000 FEU. At the same time, long-term freight traffic growth is restricted by a number of internal and external factors. The question is: What can be done to fully realise the existing trans-Eurasian transit potential? Removal of non-tariff and technical barriers is one of the key target areas. Restrictions discussed in this report include infrastructural (transport and logistical infrastructure), border/customs-related, and administrative/legal restrictions. The findings of a survey conducted among European consignors is a valuable source of information on these subjects. The authors present their recommendations regarding what can be done to remove the barriers that hamper international freight traffic along the China-EAEU-EU axis. -
