“To Be an American”: How Irving Berlin Assimilated Jewishness and Blackness in his Early Songs A document submitted to The Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS in the Performance Studies Division of the College-Conservatory of Music 2011 by Kimberly Gelbwasser B.M., Northwestern University, 2004 M.M., University of Cincinnati, 2006 Committee Chair: Steven Cahn, Ph.D. Abstract During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, millions of immigrants from Central and Eastern Europe as well as the Mediterranean countries arrived in the United States. New York City, in particular, became a hub where various nationalities coexisted and intermingled. Adding to the immigrant population were massive waves of former slaves migrating from the South. In this radically multicultural environment, Irving Berlin, a Jewish- Russian immigrant, became a songwriter. The cultural interaction that had the most profound effect upon Berlin’s early songwriting from 1907 to 1914 was that between his own Jewish population and the African-American population in New York City. In his early songs, Berlin highlights both Jewish and African- American stereotypical identities. Examining stereotypical ethnic markers in Berlin’s early songs reveals how he first revised and then traded his old Jewish identity for a new American identity as the “King of Ragtime.” This document presents two case studies that explore how Berlin not only incorporated stereotypical musical and textual markers of “blackness” within two of his individual Jewish novelty songs, but also converted them later to genres termed “coon” and “ragtime,” which were associated with African Americans. -

Now and Forever — A Conversation with Israel Zangwill (New York: Robert M. McBride & Co., 1925), 156 pp. Another "by Jews, for Jews" special, from the Memory Hole. The tone of works such as this is quite different from what is presented in the media for general (i.e., "gentile") consumption. A strange little book I picked up. Samuel Roth discusses the state of Jewry with Israel Zangwill. Zangwill was a playwright who coined the phrase "melting pot" and who wrote a standard "refutation" of the Protocols . It deals with how Jews see themselves -- and how they think others see them. It's funny to see two Jews pretending to be "against" one another in a debate -- like two ants from the same anthill. All the extreme arrogance and subjectivity of Jews is displayed here. Jews are distinctive in the world in raising such things to near hallucinogenic levels. Compare with Hosmer and Marcus Eli Ravage. Some of the most incredible (or oddly candid) statements I highlighted in red as I went thru' the text. Jews say "we're special because we remember" -- their way of saying they institutionalize trans-generational ethnic hatred as a way of separating themselves from the rest of human society. My favorite part -- Roth compares St. Paul with Trotsky! He further says that Jews are the only real Christians, and that "Jesus preached of Jews and for Jews". He says that Jesus hated the world (when he really just hated Jews -- but Jews are "the world", according to them: all others are "not of Adam"). But we mustn't forget that this Problem is primarily an ethnic, and not a religious, one. -

A. Wolfson arrived in the United States at 16 from the Lithuanian region of the Russian Empire and at Harvard as a freshman five years later. He remained at Harvard until his death in 1974, as Emeritus Professor of Hebrew Literature and Philosophy. Among the most important historians of western religious philosophy, he published on contemporary issues only until 1925 and even then only rarely. Nevertheless, his 1918 article, “Pomegranates”, deserves attention. Wolfson clearly followed debates about the American ethnic future. He carved out an original and unexpected position on that issue, and on the American Jewish future within that context. He perceptively rejected Horace Kallen’s views of a “multi-national America”, and like Israel Zangwill’s Melting Pot, he stressed that full cultural and political assimilation would occur in the United States. But unlike Zangwill, he argued that Jewish religious creativity would find a long-term place in American life, once freed of its national trappings. Strongly supporting a Hebraic renaissance and a Jewish homeland in Palestine, he also emphasized with great force that the “we”—the east-European Jewish intellectuals and the Zionists—had greatly misunderstood the promise of Reform Judaism for the diaspora. Rhapsody in Blut: Blood Feud and Blood Fusion in Israel Zangwill’s The Melting Pot Pao-Hsiang Wang ABSTRACT This paper considers a keyword of current discourse on racial integration and ethnic pluralism in its original context by investigating Israel Zangwill‟s play The Melting Pot (1908). Zangwill‟s utopian vision for ethnic assimilation, set against his Anglo-Jewish background and his transformation from a Zionist and territorialist to an assimilationist, is read as an attempt to find a feasible solution to the Jewish Question. Characters from the play embodying Judaic orthodoxy and partial assimilation are presented as doomed to failure, whereas the union of the offspring of an anti-Semitic Russian aristocrat with the Jewish eyewitness and victim of massacre David Quixano is represented as the new paradigm of eschewing Old World hatred and espousing New World tolerance and intermarriage. The wound David has sustained in the Tsarist pogrom is symbolized as a historical trauma to be purged in the ethnic melting pot. In conclusion, Werner Sollors‟s idea of descent and consent in conceptualizing the new approach to ethnic pluralism is challenged and modified through a discussion of American President Theodore Roosevelt‟s initial enthusiastic advocacy of the play and his later backpedaling in immigration policies and immigrant assimilation, demonstrating Zangwill‟s premature optimism and reinforcing the dilemma of Jewish assimilation. ISRAEL ZANGWILL A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH BY HARRY SCHXEIDERMAX "IsRAELZAXGWiLLwasoneof the great thinkers and writ- ers of this era. Profound and original in thought, graceful as an essayist, a poet and dramatist of powerful imagination, creative as a novelist and intense as a contender for Jews, justice and righteousness, as he saw them, he adorned and illuminated whatever he touched. His versatility was astounding, his wit was scintillating, his sense of humor unique and his literary style a delight. However one might occasionally differ with him, his strong personality, his manly independence and his fundamental goodness of heart never failed to charm. As a Jew he was loyal, reverent, and self-respecting, a hater of sham, proud of the fine achieve- ments and traditions of his faith and deeply concerned for the future of his people. Posterity will justly rank him as one of the brilliant luminaries of Israel who loved his brethren even when he chastised them." The foregoing tribute from the pen of Louis Marshall briefly summarizes the value and significance of the life of that great man and great Jew who, as he himself would have preferred to put it, was gathered to his fathers on August 1, 1926, at the age of sixty-two. Zangwill possessed many talents. His literary gifts em- braced all forms of the writing art,—the short story, the essay, the novel, the drama; the spoken as well as the written word; poetry and prose. Next to his interest in literature, yet not far behind, was his devotion to the trials and prob- lems of the Jewish people, a devotion which had a double source,—his keen Jewish consciousness and, what was largely an outgrowth of that consciousness, his deep sympathy with the downtrodden, no matter of what race or creed. -

The Melting Plot: Interethnic Romance in Jewish American Fiction in the Early Twentieth Century Jessica Kirzane Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2017 © 2017 Jessica Kirzane All rights reserved 2 ABSTRACT The Melting Plot: Interethnic Romance in Jewish American Fiction in the Early Twentieth Century Jessica Kirzane This dissertation argues that interethnic romance narratives reflect and express central religious, political, racial, and gendered identities and agendas of Jewish American literature and culture in the early twentieth century. Chapter One shows that fin-de-siècle Reform Jewish women authors employed interethnic romance narratives to express a belief in America as exceptional as a place of religious and gender egalitarianism. Chapter Two turns to journalist and fiction writer Abraham Cahan, who wrote interethnic romance narratives to weigh the balance between idealism and pragmatism, socialist universalist values and the principles of Jewish nationalism in determining the character of Jewishness in America. Chapter Three demonstrates that Jewish American women’s popular fictions of interethnic romance in the 1920s employed interethnic romance plots to show women’s independence and mobility in light of early feminism and to express the limitations of feminist discourse when it ran counter to their ethnic identities. Chapter Four describes how narratives of interethnic romance written by Yiddish writers I. I. Shvarts, Joseph Opatoshu, Isaac Raboy, and David Ignatov employ tropes of interethnic romance together with geographical border crossings into non-immigrant or non- Jewish spaces, co-locating physical dislocation and disorientation and intimate interpersonal desire and unease. -

Dramatic License: Alexander Woollcott’s The Story of Irving Berlin A thesis submitted to the Division of Graduate Studies and Research of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music 8 August 2006 by Laura Eddleman 2368 Rohs Street, Apt. 1 Cincinnati, OH 45219 B.M., Miami University, 2003 Advisor: bruce d. mcclung, Ph.D. ABSTRACT The Story of Irving Berlin (1925), written by drama critic Alexander Woollcott when Berlin was only 36, is the composer’s first full-length biography. Despite its acknowledged hyperbolic and apocryphal nature, the biography is consistently invoked by scholars as a source document for Berlin’s career. This thesis examines the rhetoric, function, and influence of The Story of Irving Berlin and uses its construction to consider dominant American ideologies of the 1920s. Situated among other biographies of its era, Woollcott’s writing adheres to the tenets of the then-popular “new biography” school, which emphasized an anecdotal, fiction-like approach. By fashioning a narrative modeled on patterns of fiction and invoking Berlin’s Jewish heritage to heroically characterize the composer, Woollcott effectively mythologized Irving Berlin as an archetype for the American dream. Although this characterization was intended to promote Berlin’s public image, Woollcott’s fictional constructs have hampered subsequent scholarship on the composer, outlasting the era they were intended to serve.
