India *Corresponding Author E-mail: [email protected] ______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT For the past few decades, populations of different species of Ophioglossum (Ophioglossaceae) including Ophioglossum nudicaule and Ophioglossum vulgatum have become more restricted in geographic range due to alteration of their actual or potential habitat conditions and therefore are designated as rare species of India. To find out the potential habitats of Ophioglossum for protection of their ancient gene pool, it is important to identify their plant associates as well as the nature of those associations. Structural parameters of the community such as density, abundance, frequency, relative abundance, relative frequency and importance value index of these two species of Ophioglossum and their co-existing plants were measured based on a quadrat study of three tropical deciduous forests of the lateritic part of West Bengal, India. This study reveals that there is a strong negative correlation in the association of O. nudicaule and O. -

Chapter 5: Vegetation of Sphagnum-Dominated Peatlands
CHAPTER 5: VEGETATION OF SPHAGNUM-DOMINATED PEATLANDS As discussed in the previous chapters, peatland ecosystems have unique chemical, physical, and biological properties that have given rise to equally unique plant communities. As indicated in Chapter 1, extensive literature exists on the classification, description, and ecology of peatland ecosystems in Europe, the northeastern United States, Canada, and the Rocky Mountains. In addition to the references cited in Chapter 1, there is some other relatively recent literature on peatlands (Verhoeven 1992; Heinselman 1963, 1970; Chadde et al., 1998). Except for efforts on the classification and ecology of peatlands in British Columbia by the National Wetlands Working Group (1988), the Burns Bog Ecosystem Review (Hebda et al. 2000), and the preliminary classification of native, low elevation, freshwater vegetation in western Washington (Kunze 1994), scant information exists on peatlands within the more temperate lowland or maritime climates of the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia). 5.1 Introduction There are a number of classification schemes and many different peatland types, but most use vegetation in addition to hydrology, chemistry and topological characteristics to differentiate among peatlands. The subject of this report are acidic peatlands that support acidophilic (acid-loving) and xerophytic vegetation, such as Sphagnum mosses and ericaceous shrubs. Ecosystems in Washington state appear to represent a mosaic of vegetation communities at various stages of succession and are herein referred to collectively as Sphagnum-dominated peatlands. Although there has been some recognition of the unique ecological and societal values of peatlands in Washington, a statewide classification scheme has not been formally adopted or widely recognized in the scientific community. -

The work is based on morphological data, critical review of the material kept in the most of main European and some Asian Herbaria, on the results of field observations in different regions of Eurasia and on vast taxonomic literature. Phylogenetic evidence known from the literature was also taken into account. The presented information in-cludes main synonyms, type citations, data on ecology and distribution. Identification keys for the species, subspecies and varieties are given. The lectotypes of 11 names are designated: Stachys adulterina Hemsl., S. affinis Bunge, S. baicalensis Fisch. ex Benth., S. chinensis Bunge ex Benth., S. circinata L’Hér. subsp. zaiana Emberger et Maire, S. leptodon Dunn, S. madagascariensis Briq., S. oblongifolia Wall. ex Benth., S. rie-deri Cham. ex Benth., S. sieboldii Miq., S. trichophylla Baker. The most of species of the type section are pe- rennial herbs with long rhizomes. The description of the section is enlarged, with the following traits specified for the first time: a straight upper lip, the lower lip arranged at 90° from the upper one, the stamens exserted as far as to half оf the upper lip or to its edge, and white color of corolla more common for the species from Africa. -
