Delile, 1813 meadows. The most appropriate methodologies were used to be able to identify all the benthic species present in order to evaluate the efficiency of the nursery function of the prairies investigated. The results of the numerous species captured in the juvenile stage have demonstrated the excellent nursery function of the meadows of the island of Ventotene. Based on literature records and original samples, we review here the knowledge of the Lebanese marine bivalve biota, tracing its changes during the last 170 yr. The updated checklist of bivalves of Lebanon yielded a total of 114 species (96 native and 18 alien taxa), accounting for ca. 26.5% of the known Mediterranean Bivalvia and thus representing a particularly poor fauna. Analysis of the 21 taxa historically described on Lebanese material only yielded 2 available names. Records of 24 species are new for the Lebanese fauna, and Lioberus ligneus is also a new record for the Mediterranean Sea. Comparisons between molluscan records by past (before 1950) and modern (after 1950) authors revealed temporal variations and qualitative modifications of the Lebanese bivalve fauna, mostly affected by the introduction of Erythraean species. The rate of recording of new alien species (evaluated in decades) revealed later first local arrivals (after 1900) than those observed for other eastern Mediterranean shores, while the peak in records in conjunc- tion with our samplings (1991 to 2010) emphasizes the need for increased field work to monitor their arrival and establishment. -

The geographical distribution of the Rissoidae in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea was compiled and is up-to-date until July 2011. All species were classified according to their mode of larval development (planktotrophic and nonplanktotrophic), and bathymetrical zonation (shallow species—those living between the intertidal and 50 m depth, and deep species—those usually living below 50 m depth). 542 species of Rissoidae are presently reported to the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, belonging to 33 genera. -

Mollusca: Bivalvia. Nat. Croat., Vol. 15, No. 3., 109–169, 2006, Zagreb. A 130 bivalve species from 38 families were recorded in the Mljet National Park during research carried out from 1995 to 2002. In situ observations and collections were realised by skin and SCUBA diving at 63 sites, to a maximum depth of 58 m. At 21 stations bivalves were collected by Van Veen grab, at six stations by trammel bottom sets and at one station outside the borders of the National Park by a commercial bottom trawl. For each species, the general distribution, depth range, habitat, ecological data and significant remarks are presented. Records published previously were reviewed and a bivalve check-list for the Mljet National Park with a total of 146 species belonging to 39 families was generated. Listed species account for about 70% of bivalves noted in the Adriatic Sea. Sixty-one species were recorded for the first time in the Mljet Island area. One juvenile individual of an Indo-Pacific species Semipallium coruscans coruscans (Hinds, 1845) was recorded for the first time in the Mediterranean. Some species rarely noted for the Adriatic Sea, and also rarely recorded at the stations surveyed were Nuculana pella, Palliolum striatum, Pseudamussium sulcatum, Limatula gwyni, Thyasira granulosa, Astarte sulcata, Venus casina, Globivenus effosa, Clausinella fasciata, Lajonkairia lajonkairii, Mysia undata, Thracia villosiuscula, Cardiomya costellata, Ennucula aegeensis, Barbatia clathrata, and Galeomma turtoni. -

Many people were involved in this journey, but key characters are three. Luca Marini, director of “Secche di Tor Paterno” Marine Protected Area, shared the project idea of field research on molluscs and trusted me in accomplishing the task. Without his active support in finding funds for the field activities this project would have not started. It is no exaggeration saying I would not have even thought of entering the PhD without him. Bruno Sabelli, my PhD advisor, is another person who trusted me above reasonable expectations. Witness of my childhood love for shells, he has become witness of my metamorphosis to a researcher. Last, but not least, Manuela, my wife, shared my objectives and supported me every single day despite the family challenges we had to face. Many more people helped profusely. The following taxa are treated under ICZN Art. 23.9, with the required references provided: - Mytilus variabilis Krauss, 1848 (currently Brachidontes variabilis (Krauss, 1848)) is declared nomen protectum against the senior homonym Mytilus variabilis Fischer von Waldheim, 1807, declared nomen oblitum. E-mail: [email protected] SUMMARY: The molluscan assemblages inhabiting the leaf and rhizome layers of Posidonia oceanica were studied in a deep water (–24/26 m) settlement of a highly heterogeneous substratum on an off-shore reef in the central Tyrrhenian Sea. This is one of the few works dealing with the rhizome layer and with Posidonia oceanica that has settled on hard substrata. The leaf assemblage only had a few species, less than other assemblages at a comparable depth in the same basin. This poorness may be due to the depth, but it may also be due to the high fragmentation of the meadow. However, the high percentage of carnivores is consistent with previous observations in deep water meadows. The rhizome assemblage is highly diverse both in terms of species and feeding guilds, which could be explained by the higher affinity for low light conditions of most molluscs and the greater habitat heterogeneity. The marked differences in the two taxocoenoses and the high diversification of the rhizome assemblage evidence that they should be included in studies on the potential diversity of Posidonia oceanica meadows. Failure to consider this layer seriously affects any evaluation of the biodiversity of this habitat, which is of great conservation interest. -
