Manager's Message MANAGER’S MESSAGE March is Women’s History Month. Jazz 91.9 WCLK proudly salutes all the trailblazing women Wendy Williams who are making a difference each day. Fresh off the heels of the United States Presidential Inauguration, Vice President Kamala Harris checks all the boxes for historical achievement. She is the first female VPOTUS, an African American who is also Asian American, she hails from an HBCU, and is a member of the prestigious Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Kamala Harris Incorporated. We recognize how her ascent to the second highest office in the land resonates with women on so many levels. This month we also acknowledge our own ladies of Jazz. Beginning with 30-year Veteran, Debb Moore, host of not one but two prominent shows Debb Moore on Jazz 91.9 WCLK, Jazz at Sundown and Sunday Jazz Suite. We pay high honor to Rivablue, 15-year host of Midday Jazz and Fonda Smith, news, and traffic anchor for Jazz 91.9 since 2000. It is with distinction that we recognize facilitator and host of WCLK’s The Local Take, Kiplyn Primus, who has carved out an impressive public affairs presence on Jazz 91.9, Rivablue for the past 10 years. And, many of you have had some firsthand dealings with Joi John, who for 20 years has handled membership transactions with impeccable care. As well, we extend much appreciation to Dahlia Williams, senior staff assistant, for her daily administrative contributions. Fonda Smith At Jazz 91.9 WCLK, you do not have to look far Jazz 91.9 WCLK and wide to recognize incredible women who are Affiliations making a difference in your daily life. This manager’s message is a simple reminder to appreciate the ladies who are near and dear to you. Moreover, talk about accomplishments, I am proud to serve Jazz 91.9 WCLK as General Kiplyn Primus Manager for the past 27 years. Celebrate all the great Women this month and beyond. Salute ladies and Happy Women’s History Month! Joi John . SPRING MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN March 26 - April 1 A year ago seems like a lifetime. As we prepare for our annual Spring membership Campaign, March 26 through April 1, we are reminded that just a year ago our Spring campaign came to an abrupt end, in two days, thanks to a thing called COVID-19. We cancelled our most successful campaign of the year not knowing what the financial future would hold for your Jazz station. Would we be able to continue our service of great music and community service? Would the programming you have come to expect 24/7 be interrupted? Would WCLK continue to be here for you and your family? Thanks to so many listeners becoming members in 2020, we were able to continue our service of music excellence and community service. We have arrived at this point together…and we thank you. This year starts anew with hope and faith and so does our 2021 Spring membership campaign. We know this is still a journey we take together, and we thank you in advance for your support March 26 through April 1. Jazz 91.9 WCLK A Sound Investment for the Future. Celebrating Diversity - Overcoming Adversity part 2: Marcus Roberts by Valerie Etienne- Leveille Marcus Roberts, 1963 – present: Musician, composer, arranger Marcus Roberts was born on August 7th, 1963 in Jacksonville, Florida. He grew up listening to his mother’s gospel singing and the music of the local church. These exposures to music had a lasting impact on his musical style. Marcus began teaching himself to play the piano at the age of five after losing his sight due to glaucoma (1)(2). At the age of ten in 1973, Marcus entered the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind (FSDB). Marcus did not receive formal piano lessons until he was 12 but he progressed very quickly through hard work and good teachers (2). In the 10th grade, he was mainstreamed in the local St. Augustine high school in the morning, and he went to FSDB in the afternoon for music (3). After graduating from FSDB, Marcus went on to study classical piano at the Florida State University (FSU) with Leonidas Lipovetsky (2). Marcus has won many awards and competitions over the years, but the one that is most personally meaningful to him is the Helen Keller Award for Personal Achievement. Marcus Roberts is known for his ability to blend the jazz and classical idioms, which focus on specific technical features, to create something new. He is also well-known for his development of an entirely new approach to jazz trio performance (2). His recordings reflect his artistic versatility and include pieces such as solo piano, duets, trio arrangements of jazz standards, large ensembles, and symphony orchestra (3).

By Stanley Crouch Editor's note: We last interviewed Wynton Marsalis in 1984. Since tha.t time his popularity and notoriety have, if anything, grown and, as can be seen in the following interview, he views his position with the utmost responsibility and seriousness. It is interesting to note that despite-or perhaps because of-his popularity, the trumpeter has become the focal point in a critical controversy waged over questions of innovation vs. imitation. In addressing these questions, and those concerning his success, the importance of knowledge and technical preparation for a career in music, and the role of jazz education, he brings the same carefully considered articulation which identifies his musical creativity. • • • STANLEY CROUCH: Do you hove anything to soy before we humility to one day add to the already noble tradition that first begin, on opening statement? took wing in the Crescent City.
