Walking and Cycling

NHS guidelines recommend that to stay healthy, adults aged 19 to 64 should try to be active daily and should do at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity such as cycling or brisk walking every week (https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/).

Walking or cycling to and from work, shop or even school can become a healthy part of your everyday life, which both reduces your transport costs and the impact on the environment. For example

Train station – Grange Hill (0.8 miles / walk - 15 minutes or cycle – 4 minutes)

Local schools – Coppice Primary School (1.1 miles / walk - 21 minutes or cycle – 7 minutes)

Local shops – Manor Road shops (0.9 miles / walk – 18 minutes or cycle – 6 minutes)

The LOOP

For the more adventurous, there is the London Outer Orbital Path — more usually the "London LOOP" — which is a 150-mile (242 km) signed walk along public footpaths, and through parks, woods and fields around the edge of Outer London, England, described as "the M25 for walkers.

Though perhaps a convenient footpath straight to the Sheesh restaurant half an hour away might suit the lesser mortals.

Car sharing

Car sharing is an easy way to reduce the cost of your journeys. Sharing your commute with a colleague can halve the costs of your daily commute. It reduces the number of cars on our roads - resulting in less congestion, pollution and fewer parking problems. It can provide some friendly company to reduce the stress of driving alone.

Essex County Council have worked closely with Liftshare to develop the Essex Car Share scheme. This provides a free matching service for all those who live, work and travel in and around Essex. The site matches you up with potential partners. Once matched, you can choose to share as little or as much as you like, with whoever you like!

Essex Car Share has over 4,000 members and on average they each save £759.92 per year. For more information see their website at https://liftshare.com/uk https://www.essexhighways.org/getting-around/Driving/Car-Sharing.aspx Taxi

Taxis play an important role in public transport provision - effectively plugging the gaps that are left by bus and train provision. Combined with public transport, walking and cycling, taxis can reduce the need to own a car.

Black cab taxis can be booked in advance, hailed on the street, or picked up from designated taxi ranks.

Transport for London advises that un-booked minicabs should never be used. Instead minicabs need to be booked direct with a licensed minicab company via app, phone, or at their office. You must receive a booking confirmation, which could be by text message, app, email or - if you're in a minicab office - paper receipt.

See https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/taxis-and-minicabs/ for useful information on taxis and minicabs.
