ABSTRACT 'i A new, increased inflow design flood and increased power generation requirements for 75-year-old Buffalo Bill Dam prompted modifications to the existing dam, spillway, and powerplant. A hydraulic model study investigated the proposed designs for the spillway and dam rehabilitation. The spillway approach channel configuration was determined and gate ,! open!ng discharge curves were developed for 20.5- by 28-foot top-seal radial gates op- erating under a maximum head of 115 feet. The spillway tunnel geometry was changed to a modified horseshoe shape and realigned to reduce the potential for erosion in the riverbed downstream. A broad crest shape was developed for passing discharge over the top of the i dam. I I I 17. KEY WORDS AND DOCUMENT ANALYSIS a. Throughout the study, David Hinchliff and Guy S. Lund of that branch provided cooperation and assistance. ! Supervision was provided by Thomas J. Rhone, Head, Hydraulic Structures Section, Division of Research and Laboratory Services. The assistance of Christi A. Young, rotation engineer, was greatly appreciated. Her dedicated work during the model design, construction, and data gathering was invaluable. Photographs were taken by Wayne K. Lambert. I l, I As the Nation's principal conservation agency, the Department of the Interior has responsibility for most of our nationally owned public lands and natural resources. This includes fostering the wisest use of our land arid water resoumes, protecting our fish and wildlife, preserv- ing the environmental and cultural values of our national parks and historical places, and providing for the enjoyment of life through out- door recreation. The Department assesses our energy and mineral resoumes and works to assure that their development is in the best interests of all our people. The Department also has a major respon- sibility for American Indian reservation communities and for people who live in Island Territories under U.S. Administration.
