The text is no longer than 100,000 words. Timothy L. M. Sharp ii Abstract This thesis is the first detailed geographic and ethnographic study of Papua New Guinea’s thriving betel nut trade. It tells the story of the trade of betel nut into the highlands of Papua New Guinea (PNG), and examines the daily lives and interactions of the diverse collection of participants involved in the trade – the ‘betel people’ – and how they have contributed to the making of a flourishing, contemporary and indigenous market. Betel nut is a stimulant that has long been produced, exchanged and consumed throughout lowland PNG, but was absent from the pre-colonial highlands. Since the 1960s increasing numbers of highlanders have started chewing betel nut which has given rise to a long-distance wholesale trade that connects rural lowland producers to the highland consumers. Betel nut is now the country’s most important domestic cash crop, and its sale and resale is a prominent, and potentially lucrative, livelihood activity for rural and urban people in both the lowlands and the highlands. This thesis is based on thirteen months nomadic ethnographic fieldwork in which betel nut, and the actors that shape its trajectory, was followed from the lowland production areas into the highland marketplaces and beyond. I document the considerable scale and complexity of the trade, the efflorescence of intermediaries within it, and the high level of specialisation amongst its actors. ‘Following’ betel nut and betel people also foregrounds the importance of social relationships, and the associated processes of inclusion and exclusion, to shaping the structure and the dynamics of the trade. The highly competitive and opportunistic nature of the trade leads betel people to transact in the same places and often with the same people, and it encourages them to cultivate and nurture those relationships which provide security and enable access in new places. Betel people trade to make money, but I suggest that trade relationships regularly overflow the marketplace. Further, the transactions within the trade are routinely conceptualised as more than simple commodity transfers. I also seek to frame the trade in relation to the power asymmetries between different actors, and emphasise the diverse manifestations of cooperation and competition in trade negotiations. Drawing on the growing literature within geography and anthropology concerned with the social embeddedness of ‘economic’ activity, this research emphasises that the making of markets is a dynamic and contested process, one that is always spatial, grounded in particular places. In doing so it contributes to better understanding marketplaces, livelihoods, and the creation of alternative modernities in contemporary PNG. The betel nut trade is full of contradictions and tensions, but also the aspirations of a great number of ‘grassroot’ Papua New Guineans. iii To my father, Neil Sharp, to whom I am forever indebted for instilling in me my interest in geography and in other cultures. BIXLEY Lihir Gold Limited, PO Box 789 Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea SUMMARY - Geothermal power development at Lihir Island in PNG has posed some unusual challenges. These arise from the geothermal resource, the mining environment and from the isolated location. The mining and geothermal infrastructure are both confined within the caldera, a gravity collapse structure on the northeastern coast of Lihir Island. The original purpose of geothermal wells was to assist the mining operations by depressurising and cooling parts of the geothermal resource ahead of mining operations. The potential to harness at least some of the local geothermal energy has always been recognised and when the first deep production wells had been drilled and tested, a feasibility study was made to examine the technical feasibility of small sale geothermal power generation. A 6MW backpressure plant was approved in June 2002 and commissioned in May 2003. As drilling and testing new wells proceeded the geothermal potential was revised and a further 30MW geothermal generation project was approved in June 2003 for commissioning early in 2005. 1. Two types of venting are observed.Ž. 1 Focused discharge of a clear, two-phase fluid from discrete orifices, 10±15 cm in diameter. Discharge temperatures are between 89 and 988C and estimated flow rates are as high as 300 to 400 lrmin.Ž. 2 Dispersed or diffuse discharge that consists of streams of gas bubbles ubiquitous in the area. The composition of the gas is mainly CO222Ž. 92.6±97.9% with minor amounts of N Ž.Ž. 2.2±4.7% , O 0.43±0.73% , ; CH4 Ž. 0.6±2% and He Ž0.01±0.02% . Based on their geographic position and chemical composition, the vents have been divided into two groups, A and B. Area B vents have higher K, Rb, Sb, Cs, Tl, and As and lower Ca, Li, Mn, Fe, and Sr concentrations. Their chemical difference is likely caused by subsurface mixing of a CO2 -rich water with a deep reservoir neutral chloride fluid in varying proportions.

Brooker Islanders are a sea-faring people that inhabit a large marine territory in the West Calvados Chain of the Louisiade Archipelago in Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea. In the late 19th Century, Brooker Islanders began to be incorporated into an emerging global economy through the production of various marine resources that were desired by mainly Australian capitalist interests. The most notable of these commodified marine resources was beche-de-mer. Beche-de-mer is the processed form of several sea cucumber species. The importance of the sea cucumber fishery for Brooker Islanders waned when World War I started. Following the rise of an increasingly affluent China in the early 1990s, the sea cucumber fishery and beche-de-mer trade once again became an important source of cash income for Brooker Islanders.
