It is too soon to assess the immediate impact of this unexampled global proclamation of the Faith; nor can its implications for the progress of the Cause be immediately understood. There can be no doubt, however, that so vast a proclamation will accrue towards the advancement of the process of entry by troops, on which the energy of the loved ones of Bahá'u'lláh everywhere must be even more intensively focused than before. The Marginalization of Palestinian Heritage Sites in Official Israeli Tourism Sites Noga KADMAN, Ph.D. Independent researcher [email protected] ABSTRACT: Israel is the contested homeland of both the Jewish-Israeli and the Arab-Palestinian peoples. In the practice of tourism, Israel highlights sites of Jewish history and tends to neglect those of Palestinian history. Many of the Palestinian villages and heritage sites were destroyed by Israel in 1948 and onwards, or were gradually dilapidated due to lack of official care. Large-scale Palestinian roots tourism does not exist, due to the impossibility of most Palestinians to gain access into Israel. This paper explores an unusual form of roots tourism: the encounter between Jewish-Israelis and Palestinian depopulated villages that are located today within the boundaries of Israeli tourist sites. The paper demonstrates that the villages are largely ignored or marginalized in the information given to the public. The tourism authorities therefore underestimate the roots of the Palestinians in the country and portray an overall picture of a Jewish country, with very minor Arab heritage. Because of many factors, such as the water level of the Dead Sea at a depth of 430 m b.s.l. (in 2015), average salinity of 26%, hot springs and many healing salts located there, it is a unique tourist attraction on a global level. Its attractiveness is heightened by its proximity to other sites of interest , such as the Jewish fortress at Masada, Jericho, Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found, as well as Petra, Madaba and Al-Karak on the Jordanian side of the Dead Sea. High salinity and a microclimate create perfect conditions for the development of health resorts and medical tourism. Extracting healing salts from its waters for the needs of the chemical industry is important for both the economy and medical tourism. However, as a consequence of the agricultural and urban use of the waters of the River Jordan, which flows into the Dead Sea, a persistent decrease in the lake water level has been observed over the last century. This has created a number of economic and political issues. The problems which still have to be resolved are associated with the Red Sea-Dead Sea Conduit (Canal), the division of Jordan’s water resources, conservation of the unique reservoir of the Dead Sea and the threat of hindering the development of tourism within the region.

The architectural intent of the superstructure shell (1953) over the original mausoleum (1908) and the extensive terraced landscaping (2001) above and below the structure, was to embrace the visitor in a rich sensory experience that effectively expresses the spiritual significance of the place and also safeguards the site. The Shrine of the Báb and terraced gardens 2 With the extensive landscaping begun in 1987, this portion of the master plan for this central Shrine in the Bahá’í Faith was completed in 2001 and the site received the designation of UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008. The design intent of the landscaping was to create a beautiful and unique series of gardens that is conducive to prayer, mindfulness, and meditation. Now the combination of the architecture of the Shrine and completed terraced gardens embrace the visitor in a rich sensory experience that expresses the spiritual significance of the place. The close attention to detail in the landscape design engages the visitor’s senses while tapestries of color, fragrance, bird songs, the gurgle of water, hundreds of steps and the feel of crushed tile underfoot serve to slow time.

Blake Campbell & Patrick Ravines, Bahá’í World Centre, Conservation Office, P O Box 155, Haifa, Israel The Bahá’í Faith is an independent world religion whose followers are striving for world unity based on the principle of the oneness of the humanity. Bahá’ís are followers of the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh (1817-92), who, like Christ, Muhammad, and others before Him, brought God’s teachings to humanity. The world's five million Bahá’ís are of many ethnic and racial backgrounds and they live in nearly every country in the world. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the Bahá’í Faith, the youngest of the world religions, is the second-most geographically widespread religion, after Christianity. The Bahá’í community’s collective life is administered by nine-member consultative councils that are democratically elected at the local, national and international levels. There is no clergy in the Bahá’í Faith. The international governing body, the Universal House of Justice, meets at the Bahá’í World Centre in the Haifa-Acre area of northern Israel, where the Founder of the Bahá’í Faith, Bahá’u’lláh, was exiled in 1868 and where He passed away in 1892. The Faith’s most sacred shrines, the resting places of both Bahá’u’lláh and His Forerunner, the Báb, are located there. The Shrine of Bahá’u’lláh is outside the city of Acre and the Shrine of the Báb is on Mt Carmel in the nearby city of Haifa.
