  • Football Against Racism - European Commission and UEFA Cooperate
IP/97/62 Brussels, 28 janvier 1997 Football Against Racism - European Commission and UEFA cooperate For the first time ever, a European All-Star team will play an All-Star African team. This historic match is being played in the framework of the European Year Against Racism 1997, on the basis of cooperation between the European Commission and UEFA. It will be the first big sport event dedicated to the spirit of the Year. This match will take place in Lisbon, Portugal, on Wednesday 29 January at 21h15. It will be broadcast by a number of television stations in Europe (RTP in Portugal, TVE in Spain, RTL in Germany, RTI in Italy, Mega Channel in Greece and Star TV in Turkey). It will also be shown by national broadcasters in the majority of African countries, including SABC in South Africa, and by the international network of American broadcaster, ESPN. The key message of the event is that racism has no place in sport and football. The Commission very much welcomes UEFA’s active involvement in the European Year. In Europe, there is no sport which attracts more attention and involvement than football, and there is no other sport which is enjoyed by so many people from different backgrounds and origins. The All-Star African team has many players who play for European teams such as Ajax , Anderlecht and FC Köln (see Annex). The revenue from the match will be used for football projects in Africa. There will be a discussion on racism and football during half-time. Padraig Flynn, European Commissioner with responsibility for Employment and Social Affairs, will contribute to this debate by video, as he has to be in The Hague on 30 January for the Opening Conference of the European Year against Racism.

  • Portuguese National Team Goalkeeping Coach
Fernando Brassard: Portuguese National Team Goalkeeping Coach During his youth, Brassard played for SL Benfica and won many titles, among them, two youth World Championships, the first with Riad 89-Saudi Arabia (as a substitute) and the other with Lisbon 91 - Portugal (as regular first team player) in the so cal- led “Golden Generation”, featuring players like Luis Figo, Rui Costa and Fernando Couto. Since then, he continued to play at the top level in the Portuguese league, but due to a hand injury he had to retire at the age of 30. However, his goal was to continue to be involved with football, and with goalkeeping training. One year later, he was invited to join the Portuguese National Team to become their goalkeeper coach, under Luiz Felipe Scolari, where he has remained since. SoccerCoachingInternational talked to him about his view on goalkeeping training and the key areas on developing good goalkeepers. “It’s useless to create complicated exercises, if the player isn’t comfortable with basic techniques” By: Hugo Vicente 40 No. 20 April/May 2007 I was a privileged player, because I worked at a top Portuguese team like SL Benfica. Many goalkeepers that are now playing at the top level, in Portugal, were only able to reach that level, due to their hard work and dedication, because there was no specific goalkeeper training at that time, especially for those who came from modest clubs, and the truth is, that it was not such a long time ago… The good thing is, things have changed, and they continue to change, and currently, almost every team, even at the lower levels, have a person in charge, of teaching and coaching the goalkeepers. It’s a role that is finally seen as a real important piece of the team strategy.

  • MANCHESTER UNITED FC V AC MILAN
First Knock-out Round First Leg Manchester 23 February 2005 MANCHESTER UNITED FC - AC MILAN OLD TRAFFORD, MANCHESTER WEDNESDAY 23 FEBRUARY 2005 at 19.45 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FIRST KNOCK-OUT ROUND, FIRST LEG MANCHESTER UNITED FC v AC MILAN UEFA Champions League football returns to Old Trafford for the first time in 2005 with a thrilling clash between two former champions of Europe in one of the many ties that coiuld easily have been this season’s final. United fans will remember that their team produced epic performances against Italian opposition en route to the 1999 final, whereas AC Milan’s encounters with English opposition are surprisingly thin on the ground. They have played against English teams only three times in the last quarter of a century and have not met any English sides since they were drawn against both Chelsea FC and Leeds United AFC in the 2000/01 campaign. A thrilling and evenly-balanced tie is in prospect. This will be the third tie between the clubs in UEFA competitions with AC Milan successful on the previous two occasions, both in the Champion Clubs’ Cup semi-finals. Though Manchester United won both games at Old Trafford, the margin of AC Milan’s wins in Italy in the 1957/58 and 1968/69 seasons enabled them to progress. The clubs’ first meeting was the first European game after the Munich air crash, while the latter win eliminated the holders of the competition. In the 1957/58 tie, Paolo Maldini’s father Cesare took part in the game, and in 1968/69 Fabio Cudicini, father of the Chelsea FC player, was AC Milan’s keeper.
