Introduction

This collection contains approximately 776 photographs of 167 Vermont towns taken by Maurice T. Jones (1922-2016) of Barre, Vermont, from 1991 to 1996. The collection was given to the Vermont Historical Society by Mr. Jones’s niece, Nancy Jones Audet, in 2016. The collection is housed in one archival flip top box and one oversized folder; it consumes .5 linear feet of shelf space.

Biographical Note

Maurice Taylor Jones was born on May 25, 1922, in Northfield Falls, Vermont, the son of Ward and Ella (Calef) Jones. He attended Lincoln Elementary School in Barre, Vermont, and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1940. He married Jean Newton of Moretown, Vermont, in 1949. The couple lived in St. Johnsbury, West Burke, Montpelier, and Barre. They did not have any children. Mr. Jones worked for New England Telegraph and Telephone Company and its successor companies from 1946 until 1981. Maurice and Jean were active in square dancing organizations and were members of Vermont’s 251 Club. They completed their quest to visit all 251 Vermont towns and gores in 2010. Jean died on August 9, 2013, and Maurice died on January 19, 2016.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains approximately 776 photographs of 167 Vermont towns taken by Maurice T. Jones (1922-2016) of Barre, Vermont, from 1991 to 1996, while he traveled the roads of the state as part of the 251 Club, an organization that encourages its members to independently visit all 251 towns and gores in Vermont.

Although this collection does not contain photographs of all 251 town and gores, it documents representative buildings and landscape views from many Vermont towns. The collection is particularly strong in photographs of churches, schools, town office buildings, and scenery.

The photographs came to the Vermont Historical Society in the same envelopes in which they had been received by Mr. Jones from the photograph processor. Some of the envelopes had dates on them, but most of the photographs themselves were not identified. However, Mr. Jones kept a notebook and road atlas of his 251 club travels. Using these tools, VHS volunteer Tim Leno organized the photographs chronologically and geographically, inserted them into photo preservation sleeves, and indexed the contents of each sleeve.

The header for each sleeve in this collection contains the month and year in which the photographs were taken (left), a sequential page number with a circle (middle), and the pages of the notebook in which the trip is documented (right).

Mr. Jones also documented his trips in a road atlas, highlighting the routes that he traveled with yellow, and annotating in pencil the exact date that he travelled on each road, often using an arrow to indicate the direction in which he travelled. The annotation “nice view” and “poor road” appears on some maps. Mr. Jones also circled the names of the towns he visited, perhaps in order to correlate his travels with the 251 Club’s official list of town names. The atlas now has tabs on many pages indicating the year(s) in which Mr. Jones traveled on that map. In the remotest areas of Vermont (Lewis and Averill), Mr. Jones’s map indicates that he cross- country skied into his destination.

The collection includes three personal photographs: one photograph of his cat (page 28) and two photographs of his home in the hills of Barre Town in the fall (page 128).
