The first component is titled "Essays in American History," and is accompanied by a bibliographic essay. The guide represents the "crossroads" model of curriculum development that begins with three strategic junctures of history education:(1) at grades 7 and 8, where a natural "crossroads" already exists between elementary and secondary education, between childhood and adolescence, and between an interest in the concrete and a capacity to grapple with the abstract;(2) in the first year of postsecondary education, where students are taking surveys of U.S. history, government, and education that can provide a critical juncture between secondary and postsecondary education; and (3) in capstone experiences of postsecondary education, notably social studies methods and student teaching. A NATION IN QUANDARY, 1975-- Preface In 1992, The Sage Colleges (Troy, NY) and the Niskayuna School District (Niskayuna, NY) received a three-year grant from the Fund for the Improvement and Reform of Schools and Teaching (FIRST) of the U.S. Department of Education to develop a seamless K-16 curriculum in American history. The curriculum, calledCrossroads,is composed of thirty-six units equally distributed among elementary, middle, and high school grade levels, as well as course syllabii for preservice social studies educators on the subjects of American history and history education. The curriculum is chronologically organized into twelve historical periods-- each covered by a unit at each of the three grade levels. Each unit begins with an essay on the history and historiography of the period written by the project historian, Richard B. Bernstein, an Associate of the Council for Citizenship Education at The Sage Colleges and an adjunct faculty member at New York Law School and distinguished historian. The unit plans were then written by teams of Niskayuna and Sage teachers after a year-long seminar in American history and historiography with Professor Bernstein. Following their preparation, elementary and middle school units were field tested within the Niskayuna District and in the Albany City School District. The middle school curriculum was also field tested in two Ohio districts. All units were reviewed by an advisory panel. The project is directed by Stephen L. Schechter, a Professor of Political Science and Director of the Council for Citizenship Education at The Sage Colleges, and by Henry E. Mueller, Niskayuna Middle School Social Studies Coordinator. The project is administered by the Council for Citizenship Education. Developed by the Niskayuna-Sage partnership, the "crossroads" model of curriculum development begins with three strategic junctures of history education: (1) at grades seven and eight, where a natural "crossroads" already exists between elementary and secondary education, between childhood and adolescence, and between an interest in the concrete and a capacity to grapple with the abstract; (2) in the first year of postsecondary education, where students are taking surveys of American history, government, and education which can provide a critical juncture between secondary and postsecondary education; and (3) in capstone experiences of postsecondary education, notably social studies methods and student teaching, in which students experience another transition, this time between their undergraduate experience in postsecondary education and the prospect of a teaching career rich in lifelong learning experiences. 5 Acknowledgments Project Staff Field Testers Henry E. Representing the Museum, the director must weigh the cost of appearing to support her friends the Cosbys against the value of displaying one of the world’s largest private collections of African American art.     Smithsonian Folkways Recordings: A Question of Balance D. A. Sonnebom How does a small record label, operating within a large museum setting, balance its educational mission's imperatives against economic need, a pair of priorities inherently in conflict? The following is a personal and reflexive view, affected in some measure by oral transmissions received from institutional elders but based always on my own experience. When I was a child, my home was filled with music from all over the world, including many releases from Folkways Records. Individually and as a collection, the music opened windows of my imagination and initiated a sense of curiosity and wonder about the experience and perception of others. The material ignited a musical passion that has proved lasting. I have served as Assistant Director of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings since 1998 and thus have had opportunity to live with the tensions of its "mission vs. operational needs" polarity, both to ask and try to answer the question on a daily basis. I offer this essay to readers in hopes that it may help demythologize and demystify the process whereby recordings of community-based traditions are promulgated from the setting of the United States national museum and into the increasingly globalized marketplace. The attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in September 2001 exacerbated an economic contraction already in progress in the U.S. and produced a precipitous drop in recording sales during that year's last few months. The North American music industry continued depressed in 2002, with sales down on average more than ten percent as compared to the prior year.

    DRAFT CHAPTER 5 Marylebone Lane Area At the time of its development in the second half of the eighteenth century the area south of the High Street was mostly divided between three relatively small landholdings separating the Portman and Portland estates. Largest was Conduit Field, twenty acres immediately east of the Portman estate and extending east and south to the Tyburn or Ay Brook and Oxford Street. This belonged to Sir Thomas Edward(e)s and later his son-in-law John Thomas Hope. North of that, along the west side of Marylebone Lane, were the four acres of Little Conduit Close, belonging to Jacob Hinde. Smaller still was the Lord Mayor’s Banqueting House Ground, a detached piece of the City of London Corporation’s Conduit Mead estate, bounded by the Tyburn, Oxford Street and Marylebone Lane. The Portland estate took in all the ground on the east side of Marylebone Lane, including the two island sites: one at the south end, where the parish court-house and watch-house stood, the other backing on to what is now Jason Court (John’s Court until 1895). This chapter is mainly concerned with Marylebone Lane, the streets on its east side north of Wigmore Street, and the southern extension of the High Street through the Hinde and part of the Hope–Edwardes estates, in the form of Thayer Street and Mandeville Place – excluding James Street, which is to be described together with the Hope–Edwardes estate generally in a later volume. The other streets east of Marylebone Lane – Henrietta Place and Wigmore Street – are described in Chapters 8 and 9.

Since Foster is Yeats's official biographer, author of the two-volume standard life, it is not surprising that he refers to Yeats intermittently throughout this book. Yet what happens between the opening and closing references is anything but Yeatsian. Instead, Foster ranges not only through printed books and articles but also through unpublished diaries and manuscript archives. As Charles Cowden Clarke wrote of his pupil and later friend John Keats's first encounter with Spenser's Faerie Queen, Foster has evidently gone through these sources "ramping." His omnivorous diligence results in a detailed revisionist portrait of the revolutionary generation and its members, including more women than usual in such accounts.

What do we know of this enigmatic benefactor who left his entire fortune to found in Washington “an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men”? Up till now, Smithson has remained largely a shadowy figure, for the fire of January 24, 1865 that ravaged the Smithsonian Castle completely destroyed all his writings— some 200 unpublished papers, the records of his laboratory experiments, and his scientific correspondence. Also consumed in the flames were his personal effects, including his extensive mineral collection, which included “a valuable suite of meteoric stones, which appear to be specimens of most of the meteorites which have fallen in Europe during several centuries (p. 184).” In her new book, Heather Ewing gives us the fullest picture to date of James Smithson. She accomplished this by such means as combing through numerous libraries and archives in Britain, Europe, and the U.S.; by examining the papers and diaries of his relatives and colleagues; by studying the marginalia he scribbled in his books; and by going including such notables as William Thomson, James Hutton, through his existing bank records, to glean information about Henry Cavendish, Humphry Davy, William Hyde Wollaston, his numerous travels.
