Chapter 23 Western Prairie Ecological Landscape Where to Find the Publication The Ecological Landscapes of Wisconsin publication is available online, in CD format, and in limited quantities as a hard copy. Individual chapters are available for download in PDF format through the Wisconsin DNR website (http://dnr.wi.gov/, keyword “landscapes”). The introductory chapters (Part 1) and supporting materials (Part 3) should be downloaded along with individual ecological landscape chapters in Part 2 to aid in understanding and using the ecological landscape chapters. In addition to containing the full chapter of each ecological landscape, the website highlights key information such as the ecological landscape at a glance, Species of Greatest Conservation Need, natural community management opportunities, general management opportunities, and ecological landscape and Landtype Association maps (Appendix K of each ecological landscape chapter). MONTANA NATURAL HERITAGE PROGRAM Animal Species of Concern Species List Last Updated 08/05/2010 219 Species of Concern 86 Potential Species of Concern All Records (no filtering) A program of the University of Montana and Natural Resource Information Systems, Montana State Library Introduction The Montana Natural Heritage Program (MTNHP) serves as the state's information source for animals, plants, and plant communities with a focus on species and communities that are rare, threatened, and/or have declining trends and as a result are at risk or potentially at risk of extirpation in Montana. This report on Montana Animal Species of Concern is produced jointly by the Montana Natural Heritage Program (MTNHP) and Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks (MFWP). Montana Animal Species of Concern are native Montana animals that are considered to be "at risk" due to declining population trends, threats to their habitats, and/or restricted distribution. Also included in this report are Potential Animal Species of Concern -- animals for which current, often limited, information suggests potential vulnerability or for which additional data are needed before an accurate status assessment can be made. Over the last 200 years, 5 species with historic breeding ranges in Montana have been extirpated from the state; Woodland Caribou (Rangifer tarandus), Greater Prairie-Chicken (Tympanuchus cupido), Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius), Pilose Crayfish (Pacifastacus gambelii), and Rocky Mountain Locust (Melanoplus spretus). Designation as a Montana Animal Species of Concern or Potential Animal Species of Concern is not a statutory or regulatory classification. Instead, these designations provide a basis for resource managers and decision-makers to make proactive decisions regarding species conservation and data collection priorities in order to avoid additional extirpations. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The geographic distribution of Gomphurus ozarkensis (Westfall, 1975), a species described to science only four decades ago, is confined to a four-state area in the central United States: southeastern Kansas, eastern Oklahoma, western and northern Arkansas, and southern Missouri. Its small range has led some to classify it a species of conservation concern. We examined geographic variation in the species, which despite its small range exists in three distinct subpopulations: one in the Ouachita Mountains of western Arkansas and southeastern Oklahoma; one on the Ozark Plateau of northeastern Oklahoma, south- eastern-most Kansas, southern Missouri, and northern Arkansas; and one in the Osage/Flint hills of southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma. Clinal variation is evident in the extent of yellow on the terminal abdominal segments and the extent to which certain thoracic stripes are fused. A population in a separate watershed basin in the southern Osage Hills of Okla- homa is taxonomically distinct, with some phenotypic characters tending toward G. -

Proceedings of the Indiana Academy of Science 217 (1996) Volume 105 p. 217-223 AN UPDATED CHECKLIST OF INDIANA DRAGONFLIES (ODONATA: ANISOPTERA) James R. Curry Department of Biology Franklin College Franklin, Indiana 46131 ABSTRACT: Published reports of Indiana Odonata appeared more or less regularly from the turn of the century until 1971. Two workers, E.B. Williamson and B.E. Montgomery, were largely responsible for this work, and between them, they reported 100 species of dragonflies (Anisoptera) for Indiana. Williamson published an annotated list of Indiana Odonata in 1917 in which he gave each species a number from 1 to 125. As new species were reported, they were added to the list at the appropriate taxonomic position by adding an a, b, c, and so on to an existing number. Since 1971, no additional published reports have appeared, and changes in classification and nomenclature make an update of the State list of dragonflies necessary. Williamson's numbering system does not fit well with the changes that have occurred, and the author recommends that it be dropped in favor of a more up-to-date listing. Several species reported for the State are no longer recognized, and one species new to Indiana has recently been recorded. Currently, 98 species of dragonflies are recorded for Indiana. INTRODUCTION Systematic surveys of Indiana Odonata, conducted almost annually from the turn of the century by Williamson, Montgomery, and others, ceased in the late 1960s. Abbottb∗ aFlorida State Collection of Arthropods, Gainesville, FL, USA0; bAlabama Museum of Natural History, The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL, USA (Received 22 August 2017; final version received 12 October 2017) Gomphurus gonzalezi (Dunkle) is a locally distributed dragonfly ranging from the Lower Rio Grande in south Texas southward to San Luis Potosi state in northeastern Mexico. We describe and illustrate the nymph based on specimens from Hidalgo County, Texas. The palpal lobe of G. gonzalezi has 7–8 small teeth in a straight line with the bifid end tooth approximately the same size as the more proximal teeth, typical of the Gomphurus fraternus-group. Gomphurus gonzalezi is distinct from the other species in this group by the long, round-tipped posterolateral spines on abdominal segment 9. In the Lower Rio Grande, the nymphs of G. gonzalezi bury themselves in sand and mud in slow flowing reaches. Keywords: dragonfly; Anisoptera; Texas; Mexico Introduction Gomphurus gonzalezi (Dunkle, 1992) was described based on adult specimens from San Luis Potosi, Mexico and Cameron and Starr counties, Texas. Abbott (2011) added Hidalgo County, Texas to the known distribution of the species. Adults (Figure 1) are medium-sized dragonflies with brown stripes on a gray-green to yellow-green ground color and apical abdominal segments that are largely yellow (Abbott, 2015; Needham, Westfall, & May, 2014). The species has a limited range and is locally distributed; it was rated as “data deficient” by the IUCN, as current population trends are unknown (Abbott, 2006). -
