neurs the knowledge and tools to realize their ideas and entrepreneurial

ambitions, while strengthening the country’s start-up ecosystem. The school’s

founders, Dr. Miriam and Sheldon Adelson, among their many philanthropic

endeavors, have made it their goal to educate future generations of entrepre-

neurs, promote Israeli innovation and entrepreneurship internationally, and

instill an entrepreneurial mindset in Israel’s business and economic leadership.

While the school was launched a few years ago and a groundbreaking cer-

emony was held to mark the start of construction, the inauguration cer-

emony was a celebration of the building’s completion and the beginning of

its daily use for IDC’s varied entrepreneurial projects under the umbrella

of the school. The ceremony was attended by the Adelsons, Prime Minister

Benjamin Netanyahu, Prof. Uriel Reichman, president and founder of IDC,

Oudi Recanati, chairman of the IDC board, Natan Sharansky, chairman of

the Jewish Agency, Moshe Fadlon, mayor of Herzliya, faculty members and dozens of students from the school’s various programs.

“Entrepreneurship makes Israel powerful,”

Netanyahu said at the ceremony. “The future is changing because of entrepreneurship, and we are positioned right at the cusp of this change.

To survive and thrive we need to overcome a

simple problem: Our numbers are small. We

compensate, as always, with our brains and our

guts, and now we’re in a position to compensate

even more – with entrepreneurship.”

Netanyahu thanked the Adelsons, saying, “This

is a remarkable contribution to IDC, which is

itself an example of entrepreneurship. What Prof.

Canada’s Tax-Deductible Support for Israel’s Crimes By Yves Engler Region: Canada, Middle East & North Africa Global Research, August 25, 2014 Theme: Religion Electronic Intifada 22 August 2014 When is a Canadian who leaves this country to join a foreign military force and participate in the killing of innocent civilians, including children, called a “terror tourist” and sent to jail? The answer is: only when that person joins a military force the Conservative government disagrees with. Numerous ministers in the current federal government have loudly denounced the radicalization of Canadian youth in foreign wars. Last year, the Conservatives passed a law that sets a maximum fifteen year prison sentenceleaving for “or attempting to leaveCanada” to commit terrorism.Jason Kenney, the minister for multiculturalism, recentlysaid the government is trying “to monitor networks that recruit and radicalize youth.” Last month, Somali-Canadian Mohamed Hersi was sentenced to ten years in prison for attempting to join the al-Shabab militia in Somalia. Arrested at Toronto’s Pearson airport before leaving, Hersi was not found guilty of committing or plotting a specific act of violence, but according to the presiding judge, was “poised to become a terror tourist.” Yet our government does nothing to hundreds of other Canadians who join a different foreign military force which daily terrorizes millions of people and often uses explosives to kill thousands — most of whom are civilians. It’s unknown exactly how many Canadians are participating in Israel’s ongoing attackson Gaza but an Israeli military spokesperson hassaid there were 139 Canadians in the Israeli military in 2013.

    Houses Built on Sand Ii

i Houses built on sand ii Series editors: Simon Mabon, Edward Wastnidge and May Darwich After the Arab Uprisings and the ensuing fragmentation of regime– society relations across the Middle East, identities and geopolitics have become increasingly contested, with serious implications for the ordering of political life at domestic, regional and international levels, best seen in conflicts in Syria and Yemen. The Middle East is the most militarised region in the world, where geopolitical factors remain predominant in shaping political dynamics. Another common feature of the regional landscape is the continued degeneration of communal relations as societal actors retreat into substate identities, while difference becomes increasingly violent, spilling out beyond state borders. The power of religion – and trans- state nature of religious views and linkages – thus provides the means for regional actors (such as Saudi Arabia and Iran) to exert influence over a number of groups across the region and beyond. This series provides space for the engagement with these ideas and the broader political, legal and theological factors to create space for an intellectual reimagining of socio- political life in the Middle East. Originating from the SEPAD project (www.sepad.org.uk), this series facilitates the reimagining of political ideas, identities and organisation across the Middle East, moving beyond the exclusionary and binary forms of identity to reveal the contingent factors that shape and order life across the region. iii Houses built on sand Violence, sectarianism and revolution in the Middle East Simon Mabon Manchester University Press iv Copyright © Simon Mabon 2020 The right of Simon Mabon to be identified as the author of this work has been asserted by him in accordance with the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.

MIDDLE EAST, NORTH AFRICA Israel Establishes New ‘Strategy and Iran Directorate’ Under General Staff OE Watch Commentary: On 18 February, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced the creation of a new directorate within the General Staff, called the “Strategy and Iran Directorate” to address growing Iranian threats and coordinate actions against Iran under one roof. The accompanying passages from local sources discuss this new directorate and subsequent changes to the structure of the IDF. The second article from The Times of Israel states the Strategy and Iran Directorate will not be responsible for overseeing threats from Iranian proxy forces but only Iran itself, even though Iran has ties to multiple organizations across the region. It reports that the directorate “will be responsible for countering Iran only, not its proxies, like the Hezbollah terror group, which will remain the purview of the IDF Northern Command.” Brigadier General Tal Kalman, currently in charge of the IDF’s Strategic Division, will be promoted to major general and will lead the Strategy and Iran Directorate.
