Features Added in v2.5.x

Features and changes to Avid MediaManager Select Players: • When you install the MediaManager Select Players software, it no longer matters if you are installing the software on an Avid editing system. The type of installation dialog box (either on an editing system or on a non-editing system), was removed from the installation process. • When you perform a Send to Playback, the Transfer Status window now correctly displays transfers to AirSpeed Studio and AirSpeed. • Improves compatibility with other Avid products • Provides support for Avid Unity ISIS™ media network. See “Supported Avid Unity ISIS Media Network” on page 10. • The name of the ProLog Send to Playback option located in the Create User window and Edit User window is now named Send to Playback. • The Send to Playback Device command is available from the Avid ProLog Player. For information about this feature, see “Sending Media to a Playback Device from the ProLog Player” on page 4. • In the Avid ProLog Player, the Aspect Ratio button was removed from the default control buttons that appear below the viewer. You can now access the Aspect Ratio command from the shortcut menu. • You can restrict playing video in the Avid ProLog Player. This lets you play just the audio. See “Playing Audio Only in the ProLog Player” on page 6. • In an MXF/AAF workgroup, you can add locators to sequences in the Avid ProLog Player.

Sending Media to a Playback Device from the ProLog Player

The Avid ProLog Player includes the ability to send media directly to a playback device. Previously, you used an Avid editing system to send media to playback devices, preventing the Avid editor from editing.

You must have the Avid Unity TransferManager Client software installed on your MediaManager server. The playback device must be included in the TransferManager Client Configuration. For information about adding playback devices to the TransferManager Client, see the Avid Unity TransferManager v2.9.19 Release Notes.

4 Features Added in v2.5.x

To send a clip or sequence to a playback device from the ProLog Player: 1. Make sure the playback device is configured in your workgroup. See the Avid Unity TransferManager v2.9.19. Release Notes. 2. Make sure the MediaManager user account is configured for playback in the ProLog Player by doing the following: a. Log in to MediaManager as an Administrator. b. Click Administrator in the mode selector. c. Right-click the user name and select Edit User. d. In the Edit User window, select the following options: - Additional Capabilities - Select List Creator - Send to Playback e. Click Save. 3. Load a clip or sequence into the ProLog Player. n Make sure the Avid editing application renders all effects in the sequence before loading the sequence into the ProLog Player.

4. Mark IN and OUT points. 5. Click the SendToPlayback Device button and select an available playback device from the list.

SendToPlayback Device button

The Sent to Playback dialog box opens. 6. Type a Tape ID name. n Do not use the characters /\:*?”<>| or leading spaces, trailing spaces, or trailing periods when typing the Tape ID name.

5

7. (Option) You can set the sequence or clip to a high priority by selecting the PWT (Play While Transfer) option. The transfer is given priority over any other transfers in process, including transfer types, ingest, workgroup, DET Push and DET Pull, and other SendToPlayback transfers. n You should limit the use of this option because only one PWT can be initiated at a time. The PWT option is not supported with AirSpeed® playback.

8. (Option) If you want to overwrite an existing tape ID, select the Overwrite option. c Only select Overwrite if you are sure you want to overwrite the previous tape ID name. 9. Click OK. A window opens indicating the Playback was successfully submitted. 10. (Option) Click Launch TransferManager Status to open the TransferManager Status window. n Your workgroup configuration must include a TransferManager server to display the status of the playback transfer.

Playing Audio Only in the ProLog Player

You can configure the MediaManager to play only the audio of clips or sequences in the ProLog Player. When you play a clip, the viewer displays black while the audio is playing. A single frame displays in the viewer when you stop playing the clip.

To play audio only in the ProLog Player: 1. Log in to MediaManager as an Administrator. 2. Click Administrator in the mode selector. 3. Right-click the user name and select Edit User. 4. In the Edit User window, select the following options: - Additional Capabilities - Audio Only Capability 5. Click Save.

8 Installation Prerequisites

Recommended Video Cards

For optimal performance when you are working with 2:1, 3:1, DV50, and other high bandwidth resolutions, your system should include a video card that supports hardware overlays and is at least 1 GHz.

The following video cards were tested and determined to function correctly with the Avid MediaManager Select Players. • NVIDIA Quadro®4 980 XGL •Intel® Extreme Graphics • Matrox G450 MMS

Although other video cards were not tested, many of them should function correctly with the Avid MediaManager Select Players.

If your system’s video card doesn’t support hardware overlays, you can configure your system to use “safe mode.” When using safe mode, the system performance is degraded.

To create a safe mode for your EDC4 video card: 1. Navigate to the WINNT system32 folder on your hard drive. 2. Open the DDSystemTest.dat file with a text editor (for example, Notepad). 3. Add or edit the text to read: SafeMode:1 4. Save the file.

Installation Prerequisites

Before you can use the Browser Player, ProLog Player, or Avid Player, you must install the following software in your workgroup environment: • Supported Avid Unity ISIS Media Network or Supported Avid Unity MediaNetwork • Avid Unity MediaManager v4.5.16 • Explorer 6.0 (Windows clients) • Internet Explorer 5.2.3 (Macintosh clients - Avid Player only)

9

Supported Avid Unity ISIS Media Network

Installing the Software

For new installations, when installing MediaManager Select Players on an Avid editing system, make sure the Avid editing application is installed before you install the MediaManager Select Players. This order of installation sets the correct system variables path. If the system variables path is not correct, you will receive an “Entry Point Not Found” error when you open the Avid editing application. You can use the following procedure to correct this problem.

To correct the order of the system variable path: 1. Right-click My Computer and select Properties. 2. Click the Advanced tab in the System Properties dialog box. 3. Click Environment Variables. 4. In the Systems Variables list, double click the Path variable. The Edit System Variable dialog box opens. 5. In the Variable Value text box, move the path for the Avid Player and/or Browser Player to the end of the path string. 6. Close the dialog boxes. n The type of installation dialog box, either on an editing system or on a non-editing system, was removed from the MediaManager Select Players software installation process.

This has been fixed. • JFIF JPEG images do not load on Avid Prolog Player. This has been fixed. • Avid Player burn-in text is in the middle of the screen despite MediaManager configuration settings. This has been fixed.

14 Limitations Limitations

➤ Sub-clipping OMF clips with the 2.5.6 Browser Player while in an OMF/AAF workgroup results in AAF subclips. • Sub-clipping will not work correctly with OMF clips regardless of the environment (AAF/OMF). • ProLog Player 2.5.6 should not be used in an environment that uses OMF media.

➤ Browser Player 2.5.5 can cause editing application playback to freeze.

Workaround: Customers experiencing this problem will need to modify the DDSystemTest.dat file found in the \WINDOWS\system32 directory. The DDSystemTest.dat file can be opened using Notepad. The "Safe mode" line needs to be changed from 0 to 1 if the customer has an Editor application installed. Save the file and then re-launch the Editor and Browser Player - both should now work correctly.

➤ When you create subclips using the Browser Player or ProLog Player, the production and select list are chosen when you create the first subclip. All additional subclips are automatically placed in the chosen location.

Workaround: To change the production and select list for additional subclips, press F5 key, refresh the page, and then repeat the process for creating subclips.

➤ In an Avid Unity ISIS environment, when viewing DV50 or DV25 video with the ProLog Player you might notice dropped frames.

➤ In an Avid Unity ISIS environment, when viewing video with the ProLog Player you might notice slower performance when opening complicated sequences.

➤ In an Avid Unity ISIS environment to use the ProLog Player, the Windows user name that you use to login with must match the user name of the Avid Unity ISIS account that the ISIS client is logged into. You cannot play media using the ProLog Player if the Windows login user name does not match the user name that the Avid Unity ISIS client is logged into.

➤ In an Avid Unity ISIS environment, when you load a currently ingesting clip in the ProLog Player, make sure the audio inputs match the Audio tracks selected in the audio channel configuration. Clips will load slowly if there is a mismatch between configured audio channels and actual audio inputs.

15

➤ When playing subclips in an Avid editing system that were created in the ProLog Player during an ingest, you might receive the error message: “PMS_Restart_Out_of_Range”.

Workaround: Make sure the Mark-OUT point is marked at least 60 seconds before the end of the available media.

➤ When you add locators to a video or audio mixdown clip in either an Avid editing application or the ProLog Player, the locators do not display in the ProLog Player after the clip is checked into MediaManager. If you check the clip out of MediaManager by another client, the locators appear in the monitor but any comments are not displayed.

➤ Locators added to a master clip in the ProLog Player can be modified in an Avid editing application. However, any changes to the locator color do not appear in the ProLog Player.

➤ When you are sending a job to ProEncode that contains non-English characters, the job might fail.

Workaround: Change the name to all English characters and resubmit the job.

➤ When you are closing the ProLog Player after creating a subclip and adding it to a select list, a blank browser window might remain on the display. You can manually close the window using the Close button.

➤ If you close the ProLog Player while it is performing a task such as playing media or loading a clip, it does not exit cleanly. The window changes color and the title bar of the window changes from ProLog Player to New Document. At this point you cannot restart ProLog Player by double clicking a clip.

Workaround: Internet Explorer thinks that the ProLog Player application is still running. Press F5 to refresh Internet Explorer.

➤ From the ProLog Player, you can not create subclips from sequences.

➤ Playing XDCAM proxy sequences in the ProLog Player is not supported.

➤ From the ProLog Player, sending a sequence with unrendered audio effects or video effects to an AirSpeed is not supported.

Workaround: Render the sequence in the Avid editing application before sending the sequence to the ProLog Player.

16 Limitations

➤ If you change a sequence’s user attribute in the ProLog Player, and then in the Avid editing application bin you perform an update from MediaManager, you do not see the changes that were made in the ProLog Player.

➤ Sending audio-only sequences to a playback device is not supported.

Workaround: Add a video track with filler to the sequence.

➤ When a sequence contains audio sample rates of 44.1 kHz, and you use Send to Playback from the ProLog Player to an AirSpeed, the transfer fails. The message indicates the wrong audio file size is used. AirSpeed requires 48 kHz audio.

Workaround: Mixdown the sequence in the Avid editing application before sending the sequence to the ProLog Player.

➤ When sorting search results, after performing a Tape hyperlink sort, you cannot use the Internet Explorer Back button to return to a previous sort.

➤ The ProLog Player does not support HD playback.

➤ The Prolog Player overcrops the right side of the frame within the Safe Title area and the Safe Action area. This only occurs when you are displaying the media in the ProLog Player. When you are viewing the media from the Avid editing application, the whole frame is displayed correctly without cropping.

➤ Switching to Full Screen mode and back to regular size while playing a clip in the ProLog Player leaves a video image in the background.

Workaround: Stop playing the video in the ProLog Player before switching the display back to regular size.

➤ In the ProLog Player’s Field Settings dialog box, you can select only one field from the Fields List at a time.

➤ IN and OUT marks do not display on the first or last frame of a clip. The marks are present but not visible.

➤ If you uninstall the Avid editing application from a Macintosh system that has the Avid Player installed, you must reinstall the Avid Player.

➤ In the ProLog Player, when playing sequences that contain audio dissolves with automation gain or clip gain, you might notice the audio drop out during the transition points. Workaround: You can mix down the audio to create a master clip and load the master clip into the ProLog Player.

17

➤ When adding new fields to the ProLog Player’s logging attributes area, you can move only one field at a time in the ProLog Player Metadata dialog box. If you select several fields in the Attribute Options list and then click the Right Arrow button, only one field is moved to the Selected Attributes list. Workaround: When moving fields from the Attribute Options list to the Selected Attributes list, select one field at a time.

➤ If you are using the ProLog Player on a dual-monitor Avid editing system with a clip loaded in the ProLog Player and you press the f key to enter Full Screen mode, the viewer might display black.

➤ While master clips are ingesting using the ProLog Player, do not rename the clips. If you rename a master clip during ingest, the clip keeps the original name. You can rename the clip after the ingest is complete.

➤ For better performance when you play back clips in the ProLog Player, do not use a Number 9 video card or a 3Dlabs® Wildcat® III 6210 video card. The video display might appear truncated with pixels removed or with green vertical lines.

Workaround: If your Avid editing system has a Number 9 video card, move the ProLog Player to the Bin monitor to improve playback performance. You should also use the Windows Maximize button to enlarge the ProLog Player instead of clicking the Full Screen button.

➤ When adding values to the fields in the ProLog Player’s logging attributes area, make sure you click the Update button to save the metadata.

➤ When using Full Screen mode in the ProLog Player or Avid Player, make sure the Avid editing application is not running. If the Avid editing application is open when you enter Full Screen mode, the editing application quits. Full Screen mode changes the screen resolution on the system. You cannot change the screen resolution while the Avid editing application is open.

Workaround: You should use the Windows Maximize button to enlarge the ProLog Player instead of clicking the Full Screen button.

➤ If you are using the ProLog Player on a dual-monitor Avid editing system, you might notice playback issues.

Workaround: Move the ProLog Player to the second monitor and set the second monitor as the primary monitor using the Display Properties control panel.

18 Limitations

➤ When you drag the Fields Settings dialog box over the ProLog Player viewer, the viewer does not refresh and it holds the image of the Fields Settings dialog box until you close the Fields Settings dialog box.

➤ When you name catalogs, you must choose different names for each catalog.

➤ Locators added in the ProLog Player cannot be deleted from an Avid editing system. Locators added from an Avid editing system and checked in to MediaManager must be deleted from both the Avid editing system and ProLog Player.

➤ In the ProLog Player, when creating a new select list, if you type a name that already exists as a published select list, the wrong error message might display. If you see the error message “No clip has been selected,” it should instead show an error message indicating the select list name already exists.

➤ If you don’t want certain user fields displayed in the ProLog Player, you can click Fields and move the unwanted fields from the Selected Fields list to the Fields List.

For example, to no longer display the _URN_ID: IMBDSERVER:: fb4fee937:0 field (this field is generated by Media Browse Capture Manager during ingest), remove it from the Selected Fields list.

➤ Fields created in the ProLog Player by a user do not appear in the ProLog Player Metadata Setting dialog box when you are logged in as an Administrator.

➤ When there is a discrepancy between the Avid Unity password and the MediaManager password, the login options might differ. For example, a you could have Select List Creator privileges when logging in with the MediaManager password but not with the Avid Unity password.

Workaround: Always create Avid Unity user accounts with the same names and passwords as MediaManager user accounts.

➤ Playing video in Full Screen mode might cut off the lower burn-in marks. This occurs because Full Screen mode sets the screen resolution to 640 by 480 pixels.

Workaround: Use the horizontal and vertical adjustment controls on your monitor to adjust your screen.

➤ It might be difficult to scrub, fast forward, or rewind to the last or first frame of a clip.

Workaround: You can move frame forward or backward to the end or beginning of a clip.

19

➤ Sometimes the Avid Player window overdraws other open applications.

Workaround: Click the Minimize button to hide the Avid Player window when you want to remove it from your view.

➤ In the Avid Unity environment, “Server+workspace” names need to be less than 40 characters.

➤ The EDC4 video card that ships with Avid NewsCutter® requires a special setting to support the MediaManager Browser Player or Avid Player. The setting should be selected automatically during installation.

However, if a gray window appears during playback, or if you work with a dual-display adapter and one screen does not play video, use the following procedure to create a “safe mode” for the video card:

To create a “safe mode” for your EDC4 video card: 1. Navigate to the WINNT system32 folder on your hard drive. 2. Open the DDSystemTest.dat file with a text editor (for example, Notepad). 3. Add or edit the text to read: SafeMode:1 4. Save the file.

See “Recommended Video Cards” on page 9.

➤ When you name a subclip with non-U.S. characters (for example, Ø, Å, or Æ), you might not be able to add it to a select list.

➤ Do not change the current PortServer Pro or License Pool server while playing from it.

➤ When the PortServer Pro connection is lost, a fatal exception error occurs and the Avid Player crashes.

➤ Long clips might stop playing after 50 minutes.

➤ Visual C++ runtime errors might occur on dual-processor systems, but only after several hours of use.

➤ If you are on the very last frame of a clip and try to play, fast forward, or rewind, unexpected behavior might occur.

20 Technical Support Information

➤ Logging in to the Avid Player might take a long time when sequences are loading. This depends on the size and number of sequences, and the number of cuts within each sequence.

➤ Problems with timecode: • Avid Player timecode might be one frame off during 24p playback. • When you create subclips from 24p media, the IN point and OUT point timecodes are wrong.
