  • OH-275 NARRATOR: Bob Ellis INTERVIEWER: Aaron Monson DATE: June 24, 2008
TEMPE HISTORICAL MUSEUM ORAL HISTORY PROJECT INTERVIEW #: OH-275 NARRATOR: Bob Ellis INTERVIEWER: Aaron Monson DATE: June 24, 2008 BE = Bob Ellis INT = Interviewer _______ = Unintelligible (Italics) = Transcriber’s notes Side A INT: Interview for the Tempe Historical Museum on June 24, 2008. I’m here with Bob Ellis, former station manager for ASU Channel 8 KAET. Let’s begin. Can you tell me, when did you first come to ASU, and what made you choose ASU as an employer? BE: I came to ASC, Arizona State College, in 1947. I was in the service—got an honorable discharge, by the way—and came out to Tempe and Phoenix to visit my sister, who had married a native of this area. And while I was here, a friend that I went to high school with was in the Papago Veterans Hospital with rheumatic fever, and he told me he was going to take advantage of the G.I. Bill and go to Arizona State College. And that was something that I was interested in doing, but not here; I was from Ohio. But anyway, I went over and enrolled, and I loved it. It was a small school, there were about 2,500 students, half of us were veterans. And if you wanted to be in the debate team or the choir, even if you wanted to play football or basketball, you probably would get a shot at it. So I was able to do nearly everything I wanted to do at Arizona State College. I was on the debate team, I was in the choir, I also was vice president of the student body.

ARIZONA PBS REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY Dear friends, As one of the last local, independent voices in our media landscape, we exist to tell the stories of Arizona. Our communities rely on us for news and public affairs coverage, high-quality children’s content, arts programming and much more. We know our audience well, and we take great care and great pride in serving you. We’re proud to be one of the most highly watched and highly rated stations in the public television system. One of our highlights in 2017-18 was being recognized for our Educational Outreach work by the Rocky Mountain Region of the National Academy of Television Sciences, which honored Arizona PBS with the prestigious Governors’ Award. Our Outreach work is a core part of our mission, both on-air and in communities across the state, and we were thrilled to see it recognized. Our Educational Outreach team spans the entire state of Arizona and impacts children of all backgrounds. We help educators improve their skills and make effective use of PBS KIDS materials. We help prepare preschoolers for kindergarten through educator workshops and camps. And we work with dozens of community-based organizations to further our goal of improving life for Arizona’s children. While our Educational Outreach team is busy across the state, we also air safe, educational children’s programming on both our main channel and 24/7 on Arizona PBS KIDS. From education to news to arts and beyond, we are constantly looking for ways to serve our communities in a significant and meaningful way.

ARIZONA PBS REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY OVERVIEW LOCAL VALUE As a service that receives public funding, Arizona PBS recognizes that we bear a responsibility to serve the public good. Available free to everyone, Arizona PBS is a trusted source of in-depth news and civil dialogue at a time when Arizona needs it most. We connect our audience to the world because we believe that understanding how our world works — and how it has come to be this way — helps all of us shape our present and our future in a way that provides and cares for everyone. As a public service, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of integrity, transparency, credibility, inclusion and impartiality. We pursue truth and knowledge. We want to shape a world where differences and diversity are celebrated, not feared. We strive to be a force that drives all media organizations to report on challenging subjects with integrity. LOCAL IMPACT Arizona PBS provides a space for conversation, information-sharing and education about topics and issues of common interest. We act as a public square where divergent ideas and perspectives are welcomed, we provide a space for civil discourse, and we strive to make our programming reflect the diversity of our communities. Arizona PBS’ signal reaches 80 percent of Arizona homes. With approximately 600,000 viewers weekly, Arizona PBS consistently ranks among the most-viewed public television stations per capita in the United States. During Fiscal Year 2020, our website azpbs.org received more than 2.2 million page views. Prior to the pandemic, we connected with our community in person by hosting and participating in thousands of community events and workshops in our 60- year history, reaching tens of thousands of Arizonans.
