  • School Newsletter Spring 2021
Spring Term 2021 SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Diocesan Director of Education Deborah Smith I have been thinking about community and what does a sense of ‘community and living well’ mean to us. The Bible is very clear, we were made for community. In Genesis chapter 1 we are told of how the first humans communed with God in the garden of Eden. The sense of being together, of sharing our lives with each other and with God is at the center of our very being. ‘The conviction that we are created and sustained by God for living together in families and communities is at the root of our dedication to educating for life together.’ (CEEO, 2016:11) I wrote the first part of this letter following the government announcement regarding Tier 4 and further restrictions across the UK. Who knew then what the fullness of the first week of term would bring? We had already decided that this newsletter was to fo- cus on community as we recognize how important such a sense of community has been recently and continues to be. My prayers go out for all of you this week and in the weeks ahead. You have already achieved all that has been asked of you and more. We are here to support, advise and most of all listen if you want us to. I love the idea of sharing our lives together, of ‘living well’ together. This doesn’t mean we will all always agree or that we share all the same views on a myriad of topics but it does mean we are committed to working through difficult times and any differences that become apparent.

  • Economic Change and Possible Proto- Industrialisation in the Parish of Standish in the Late Seventeenth Century: the Evidence from Wills and Inventories, 1671—1680
Economic change and possible proto- industrialisation in the parish of Standish in the late seventeenth century: The evidence from wills and inventories, 1671—1680 C. J. Watson Introduction This article looks at probate records from the parish of Standish, Lancashire, from 1671 to 1680, with a view to assessing the extent to which they provide evidence for emergent proto-industrial trends. The parish is in rural south-west Lancashire, adjacent to Wigan and close to other centres of population such as Preston and Bolton. It lies on the edge of the central Lancashire plain, between and slighdy to the north of the two areas centred on Manchester and Liverpool, which have been described as distinctive cultural and economic regions, and which in the eighteenth century were to become the cradle of the world’s first industrial revolution.1 It has been suggested that the favourable position of this area in terms of geography and climate led to its relative prosperity.2 The farms were generally small, many no more than twelve to twenty customary acres, with only a few of fifty acres or more.3 Accurate population estimates before 1801 are elusive, but sources from the sixteenth century to 1821 show 1 J. • Charnock Richard Chronicle
Charnock Richard Chronicle Christ Church and Rivington Pike – Photograph by Francis Rostron The Magazine of Christ Church Charnock Richard December 2016 FROM THE EDITOR Hi Everyone, I would like to say a massive thank you to Andrew Leigh for raising funds for Pre-school, I’ve known Andrew for many years and he really is a credit to our village for giving up his free time and sharing his talents to raise money for our village groups. Many thanks to my Dad Harold & Husband Paul for decorating the Christmas tree outside Pre- school, thanks also to Joe Noblett who always donates the Christmas tree and to Thomas Stafford for delivering and helping Harold erect the tree. As always, the tree looks wonderful and the Pre-school children love it. Congratulations must go to Barbara Lowe, who lives in the village. Barbara is dedicated to the community radio station Chorley FM, which celebrated its 10th anniversary of being on air at the end of November. We were fortunate enough to be invited to a party at Chorley Football Club and Roxanne went into the station during the 10th anniversary broadcast where she met some local and national celebrities. Once again, thank you to everyone who has sent in articles and letters. If you have an article, letter or advert that you would like me to include in the next chronicle please e-mail [email protected] by Friday 20th January. Please remember when providing dates for future events, that the Chronicle needs to be edited, printed and then distributed, so please allow for this as often people receive the Chronicle after events have taken place.

  • Parish News January 2021
Parish News Including news from St Philip’s January 2021 £1 Dear friends … and I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: “give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown”. And he replied: “go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way”. These words are well known, not so much because of their author who privately published the poem from which they are taken in 1908, but because they were used by King George VI in his wartime Christmas broadcast of 1939. Whether you are reading these words for the first time or whether they are very well known to you, they almost certainly provide an opportunity to pause for thought at the beginning of a new year. I’m sure that for all of us, 2020 will have provided plenty of surprises - happy and sad events in our own lives and in those of our families, colleagues and friends. There will have been changes of all kinds, expected and unexpected, welcome and unwelcome, minor and major. Overshadowing and surrounding them all has been the coronavirus pandemic and its awful impact with 68,000 deaths at the time of writing. Add to that the job losses, damage to the economy and enormous strain placed on our NHS, education system and community life and it’s little wonder that it will be a year many want to forget. However, if we were to spend too much time at the beginning of 2021 dwelling on these issues, we would become so absorbed with what might happen this year that we would be too scared to do anything.
