Grounded in detailed archival and ethnographic research, Deceptive Majority unearths evidence that well before the emergence of twentieth century movements for Dalit liberation, the subset of ‘untouchable’ castes engaged in sanitation labor in colonial India conceived of themselves as constituting a religious community (qaum) separate from both Hindus and Muslims—a community with its own prophet, shrines, rites, legends, and liturgical songs. This book tracks the career of this tradition alongside the effort to encompass it within a newly imagined Hindu body politic—a majoritarian project advanced in complex, distinct, yet convergent ways by colonial administrators, Hindu nationalists, the Congress Party, and Mohandas Gandhi. A sensitive account of contemporary religious life in the north Indian city of Lucknow illuminates both the embrace and the contestation of Hinduization within a Dalit community. A weaving together of the history and ethnography of religion, Deceptive Majority reveals the cunning both of the architects of Hindu majoritarianism and of those who quietly undermine it.   • Civics National Civilian Awards
    National Civilian Awards Bharat Ratna Bharat Ratna (Jewel of India) is the highest civilian award of the Republic of India. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is conferred "in recognition of exceptional service/performance of the highest order", without distinction of race, occupation, position, or sex. The award was originally limited to achievements in the arts, literature, science and public services but the government expanded the criteria to include "any field of human endeavour" in December 2011. Recommendations for the Bharat Ratna are made by the Prime Minister to the President, with a maximum of three nominees being awarded per year. Recipients receive a Sanad (certificate) signed by the President and a peepal-leaf–shaped medallion. There is no monetary grant associated with the award. The first recipients of the Bharat Ratna were politician C. Rajagopalachari, scientist C. V. Raman and philosopher Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who were honoured in 1954. Since then, the award has been bestowed on 45 individuals including 12 who were awarded posthumously. In 1966, former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri became the first individual to be honoured posthumously. In 2013, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, aged 40, became the youngest recipient of the award. Though usually conferred on Indian citizens, the Bharat Ratna has been awarded to one naturalised citizen, Mother Teresa in 1980, and to two non-Indians, Pakistan national Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan in 1987 and former South African President Nelson Mandela in 1990. Most recently, Indian government has announced the award to freedom fighter Madan Mohan Malaviya (posthumously) and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on 24 December 2014.

Forgetting the Violence, Remembering the Report: The Paradox of the 1931 Kanpur Riots Abstract This thesis explores the paradox between the events of the Kanpur Riots and the Kanpur Riot Commission Report, written in its aftermath. While the former is regarded as another example of Hindu- Muslim strife in the twentieth century, the latter has become an important text in nationalist historiography. This thesis will argue that the significance of the Report is bound up in the Kanpur Riots. The riot participants were the subject and audience of the Report and the authors of the Kanpur Riot Commission Report used them to create a framework for understanding Indian history that continues to be invoked today.     List of Bharat Ratna Award Winners (1954 – 2015) The Bharat Ratna, which was instituted in 1954 by the government of India, is the country’s highest and most prestigious civilian award and ranks seventh in the order of precedence. The award is given “in recognition of exceptional service/performance of the highest order”. It is a merit-based award and is presented to the winners without any distinction of position, race, sex, or occupation. Prior to 2011, the award was only given for achievements in the fields of science, arts, literature, and public services. However, in December 2011, achievements in “any field of human endeavour” was also included thereby expanding the criteria of the awards. Every year, a maximum of three awards are presented. The Bharat Ratna awards are given by the President of India; however, the recommendations are made by the Prime Minister.Over the years many noted personalities in the fields of politics, business, sports, music, etc have received the Bharat Ratna awards. Below we present a list of the winners. C Rajagopalachari (Awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954) C Rajagopalachari was the Governor General of independent India from 1948 to 1950. He was the first and last Indian to hold this post. He was the Chief Minister of the Madras Presidency from 1937 to 1939 during the British rule. In independent India, he served as the Chief Minister of the Madras State from 1952 to 1954. He also founded the Swatantra Party. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (Awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954) Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was a renowned philosopher. He was the Vice President of India from 1952 to 1962.
