Cambridge University Press 978-1-108-84382-9 — Deceptive Majority Joel Lee Frontmatter More Information Deceptive Majority How did it come to be common sense that the vast swath of the population of South Asia once known as ‘untouchable’ are and always have been Hindu? Grounded in detailed archival and ethnographic research, Deceptive Majority unearths evidence that well before the emergence of twentieth century movements for Dalit liberation, the subset of ‘untouchable’ castes engaged in sanitation labor in colonial India conceived of themselves as constituting a religious community (qaum) separate from both Hindus and Muslims—a community with its own prophet, shrines, rites, legends, and liturgical songs. This book tracks the career of this tradition alongside the effort to encompass it within a newly imagined Hindu body politic—a majoritarian project advanced in complex, distinct, yet convergent ways by colonial administrators, Hindu nationalists, the Congress Party, and Mohandas Gandhi. A sensitive account of contemporary religious life in the north Indian city of Lucknow illuminates both the embrace and the contestation of Hinduization within a Dalit community. A weaving together of the history and ethnography of religion, Deceptive Majority reveals the cunning both of the architects of Hindu majoritarianism and of those who quietly undermine it. CURRENT AFFAIRS= 07-09-2020 KESAVANANDA BHARATI Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the passing away of Kesavananda Bharati Ji. About: Kesavananda Bharati was the head seer of the Edneer Mutt in Kasaragod district of Kerala since 1961. He left his signature in one of the significant rulings of the Supreme Court when he challenged the Kerala land reforms legislation in 1970. The Kesavananda Bharati judgement, is a landmark decision of the Supreme Court of India that outlined the basic structure doctrine of the Constitution. Justice Hans Raj Khanna asserted through the Basic Structure doctrine that the constitution possesses a basic structure of constitutional principles and values. The doctrine forms the basis of power of the Indian judiciary to review and override amendments to the Constitution of India enacted by the Indian parliament. MOPLAH REBELLION A report submitted to the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) in 2016 had recommended the removal of the Wagon Tragedy victims and Malabar Rebellion leaders Ali Musliyar and Variamkunnath Ahmad Haji, and Haji’s two brothers from a book on martyrs of India’s freedom struggle. CROSS & CLIMB 2019 1 About: The report sought the removal of names of 387 ‘Moplah rioters’ from the list of martyrs. The book, Dictionary of Martyrs: India’s Freedom Struggle 1857-1947, was released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week. The report describes Haji as the “notorious Moplah Riot leader” and a “hardcore criminal,” who “killed innumerable innocent Hindu men, women, and children during the 1921 Moplah Riot, and deposited their bodies in a well, locally known as Thoovoor Kinar”.

True education, according to Swami Vivekananda, must enable a person to manifest all that is best in him by a harmonious development of head, hand, and heart. Such an education would not only combine in it the best elements of Eastern and Western culture but would at the same time hold aloft the Indian ideals of devotion, wisdom and morality so that it might meet the national temperament at every point.

In his Science of the Emotions, Bhagavan Das undertakes a bold and incisive study of the continuum of Desire-Thought-Action, where he demonstrates elegantly and unambiguously that “emotions” and “feelings,” mostly mixed and lumped together by the ignoramus, are none other than the workings of this mysterious triplet. Having recognised that mastership of the mind’s pendular māyāvic movements swinging back and forth the Centre of Being is prerequisite to success, in whatever domain it chooses to focus upon, Das traces the nature of Desire, its relation to the principal e-motions and their sub-divisions, and proceeds unravelling the aetiology of attitudes and their implications for behaviour.

India i IEEE International Conference on Recent Advances and Innovations in Engineering (ICRAIE-2014) About Jaipur The City Hosting The Conference The famous city of Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and is universally known as the "Pink City" and pink it is, with beautiful constructed palaces, havelis and forts. Tall, rugged men with handle-bar whiskers sport bright pink turbans. Jaipur which means the city of victory was built 286 years back and is 262 km by road from Delhi (capital of India). A strong wall encircles the old city, protecting all within. Built in 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh-II, Jaipur was the first planned city of its time (the earlier planned city in northern India having been built near Taxila sometime in the 2nd century BC). Jaipur was planned by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, a Bengali architect, in a grid system with wide straight avenues, roads, streets and lanes and uniform rows of shops on either side of the main bazaras, all arranged in nine rectangular city sectors (chokris). The city itself is an attractive creation worthy of universal admiration. Jaipur is predominantly known for its musicians, artisans, craftsmen and fairs & festivals. It has attractive monuments where one can breathe the fragrance of history. Comfortable and luxurious hotels, once the pride of kings, parks, gardens, excursions to nearby places of interest, make Jaipur a tourist's paradise.
