Germany - Athletic Tour through Upper Swabia Bike Tour 2020 Individual Self-Guided 8 days / 7 nights Upper Swabia with its beautiful landscape is perfectly suited to cycling tours. For those cyclists who are interested in a sporty and challenging tour, they can explore the hilly landscape between the Danube and the Lake, crossing over the Württembergian Allgäu. The contrast between the buzz of Lake Constance with its impressive Alpine panorama and the peaceful landscapes of the Wurzer Ried and Federsee Lake is particularly attractive. Day 2: Constance - Markdorf - Bad Saulgau 100 km + boat trip The car ferry takes you to the other side of the lake, to Meersburg. First you cycle along the lake bank to Immenstaad, where you turn your back on the lake and head for Markdorf. Along the next stretch, willows and a lot of nature define the look of the Upper Swabian countryside here. Day 3: Bad Saulgau - Ulm 90 - 100 km The basin of Federsee Lake is an ancient cultural region. Archaeologists have made important discoveries on digs here, from the Palaeolithic Age and the pile dwellings from the Bronze Age. Soon after, you reach the Danube. You now have two options: the prettier option involves a 10 km longer cycle via Blaubeuren and the Blautopf, one of the biggest karstic springs in Germany, to Ulm. The slightly shorter stretch takes you along the Danube to Ulm. Day 4: Ulm - Bad Wurzach 85 km Gentle hills, upland moorland and lakes characterise this part of the tour in northern Upper Swabia. On the way you should definitely visit the mighty imperial abbey in Ochsenhausen. Then it's not far to today's destination, Bad Wurzach which features an upland moor, Wurzacher Ried, the largest of its kind that is intact in Central Europe. Day 5: Bad Wurzach - Wangen im Allgäu 65 km Today's section is shorter than the day before, but challenging! You explore the Württemberg Allgäu and cycle via Leutkirch and Isny to Wangen in Allgäu, where you should go on a walk through this beautifully unspoiled old town. Day 6: Wangen im Allgäu – Bregenz 55 km You cycle along the Danube - Lake Constance cycle path today, through the Tettnang hops area, the most southern hops growing area in Germany. Pedaling through orchards, you cycle to Kressbronn, where you find yourself back on Lake Constance. Along the Lake Constance cycle path, you cycle to Bregenz, the capital town of the Vorarlberg region of Austria and famous for its annual festival on the world's largest lake stage. At Altenrhein, you cross the border to Switzerland and follow the cycle path to Arbon, Romanshorn and then back to Constance. The cycle path is almost always right at the side of the lake here. This stretch us flat and easy to cycle, unless in a stronger westerly wind. You will frequently pass places where you can go swimming and refresh yourself in the lovely cool waters of the lake. Day 8: Individual departure or extension of stay After breakfast, you start your individual return journey home or extend your stay.
