BOCHK Fully Supports – Hong Kong Geopark Charity Green Walk” 28 Nov 2009 Kick-off Ceremony of “BOCHK fully supports – Hong Kong Geopark Charity Green Walk” Eight geo-sites in Northeast New Territories and Sai Kung were designated as Hong Kong National Geopark by the Ministry of Land and Resources of China in September 2009. To enable local residents as well as visitors to appreciate these geo-wonders, BOCHK Charitable Foundation has specially initiated “Hong Kong Geopark Charity Green Walk”. In the coming months, a number of eco-tours will be organized for the general public to learn more about Hong Kong’s geological and geomorphologic features. This meaningful programme is fully supported by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, Geological Society of Hong Kong, Sai Kung District Council, Tai Po District Council, North District Council, Polar Museum Foundation and HK Discovery. The kick-off ceremony of this programme was held today at Wai Man Road Rest Garden in Sai Kung Town. The officiating guests included Mr. Li Jiuzhong, Deputy Chief Risk Officer of Bank of China (Hong Kong); Dr. S.F. Leung, Deputy Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department; Dr. Chen Qin Fang Margie, President of Geological Society of Hong Kong; Mr. Wan Yuet Kau, Vice-Chairman of Sai Kung District Council; Dr. Yau Wing Kwong, Chairman of Working Group on Environmental Protection of Tai Po District Council and Tai Po Environmental Association; Mr. Terry Tam, Chairman of Publicity Working Group of North District Council; Dr. Rebecca Lee, Founder of Polar Museum Foundation; and Mr. Jan Chan, Founder of HK Discovery (Co-organizer of this programme). Following the ceremony, about 170 guests, eco-guides, BOCHK staff/customers and members of the media proceeded to a boat tour to Sharp Island, where they all enjoyed an eco short walk. Afterwards, they cruised around Kau Sai Chau, Jin Island, High Island and West Dam of High Island Reservoir to observe various kinds of special geological features and landforms up-close. “Hong Kong Geopark Charity Green Walk” will be held every Saturdays from 16 January to 10 April 2010 (except 13 February 2010). Professional guides and eco-guides from BOCHK Page 1 of 2 will lead the participants to explore the natural beauty of the impressive Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region and Northeast New Territories Sedimentary Rock Region. In support of “Green” education, BOCHK Charitable Foundation will sponsor all relevant costs. Each participant is required to pay an enrolment fee of HK$20, which will be donated to Polar Museum Foundation for educational and conservation causes. Starting from 9:00pm on 1 December 2009 (Hong Kong time), interested parties may browse BOCHK’s homepage (www.bochk.com) for more details and enrolment. BACKGROUND 2. Most people have the impression that Hong Kong is a crowded concrete jungle with only tower blocks and shopping malls. Less people are aware of the fact that we also have sylvan environments of stunning natural beauty. In this small territory of 1,100 square kilometres, more than half of the land is wooded mountains and ravines. While much of Hong Kong’s wild terrains boast high biodiversity, which has attracted growing attention in recent years, also harboured within our landscape are some extraordinary but lesser known geodiversity, such as multifarious rock formations and geographical features. In last year’s Policy Address, as a part of the Government’s continuous effort to enhance overall quality of life, the Chief Executive announced that the Government would set up its first geopark under the framework of the Country Parks Ordinance and Marine Parks Ordinance, with a view to better conserving our geological landscapes as well as promoting geoeducation and geoscience popularization. 3. The Geopark programme was initiated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1999, and was launched in 2004. The definition of geopark is “geological site of special scientific significance, rarity or beauty; together with geological significance, these sites must also have high archaeological, ecological, historical or cultural value”. At present there are 57 global geoparks worldwide, which are located in 18 countries, and 20 of these parks are in the Mainland.

    29 Mar 2010 New routes and new experience from professional geo-guides offered by the “BOCHK fully supports – Hong Kong Geopark Charity Green Walk” Bank of China (Hong Kong) (“BOCHK”) will organise a new series of the BOCHK fully supports – Hong Kong Geopark Charity Green Walk (“Charity Green Walk”) eco-tours for general public every Saturday from 17 April to 18 December 2010, following the overwhelming response of the Charity Green Walk which brings together charity and environmental protection under one roof. Professional geological experts from the Geological Society of Hong Kong and experienced eco-guides will introduce the geological features and eco-environment of Hong Kong, in order to enhance public awareness on conservation of ecological environment. The Charity Green Walk is fully supported by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, the Geological Society of Hong Kong, Sai Kung District Council, Tai Po District Council, North District Council, Polar Museum Foundation and HK Discovery. Four new routes covering Tung Ping Chau, East Dam of High Island Reservoir, Ma Shi Chau and Po Toi Island will be introduced, in addition to the two original routes of Northeast New Territories Sedimentary Rock Region (Grass Island) and Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region (Sharp Island and Jin Island) which will be enhanced. Over 100 BOCHK staff members volunteered as eco-ambassadors will offer assistance during the tours. In support of “Green” education, the BOCHK Charitable Foundation will continually sponsor all relevant costs. Each participant is required to pay an enrolment fee of HK$30, which will be donated to Polar Museum Foundation for educational and conservation causes.

EAST TUNG LUNG ISLAND LANDFILL 12.1 Basic Information Project Title 12.1.1 East Tung Lung Island Landfill (ETLIL) – marine site M.7. Nature of Project 12.1.2 The Project would form a new marine based waste disposal site in waters located to the west of Ninepin Group (Figure 12.1). 12.1.3 The ETLIL would involve the construction of an artificial island of approximately 390ha in size. The site would be designated as a public filling area for the receipt of inert C&D material; once the reclamation is completed, the site would be developed as a landfill for subsequent operation for the disposal of waste. Construction works would be as described in Part A; Section 3.2. Location and Scale of Project 12.1.4 The ETLIL is located approximately 2.5km to the east of Tung Lung Chau, 2km southeast of the Clear Water Bay Peninsula and some 1km to the west of South Ninepin. Approximately 175Mcum of fill material will be required to construct the artificial island, with a final site formation level to +6mPD. The capacity of the landfill site would be in the order of 65Mcum. 12.1.5 Seabed levels in this area vary from 20 to 30m below Chart Datum. There would be a requirement to dredge some 4Mcum of muds to facilitate seawall construction. History of Site 12.1.6 The site is located within open marine waters and would be formed entirely as part of this project.

INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background The Territorial Development Strategy Review (TDSR) completed in 1998 has set out the strategic planning context for the South East New Territories (SENT) sub-region. According to the Final Executive Report of the TDSR, the strategic growth of the SENT sub-region is to be confined to Tseung Kwan O New Town with the rest of the area proposed for conservation and recreation uses with residential developments, mostly low density, only at suitable locations. Within this context, the main objective of the Draft Recommended Development Strategy (RDS) is to formulate an up-to-date planning and development framework for SENT to year 2016 and beyond, comprising: • A Draft Recommended Land Use Framework; • A Draft Tourism and Recreation Framework; and • A Draft Landscape and Conservation Framework. The Draft RDS results from a study process comprising: a review of baseline conditions, an analysis of constraints and opportunities, the generation and evaluation of Initial Development Options, the preparation of a Preferred Development Strategy (PDS), the testing of this PDS in a number of technical impact assessments, and, the preparation of the draft RDS. Public consultation has been an integral part of the study process and two public consultation forums have been convened so far, the first to gather initial views on the study methodology and key issues and the second to seek opinions on the Initial Development Options. A final round of public consultation is to be held in December 2000 to gauge opinion on the Draft RDS prior to finalisation of the Strategy.
