Farmhouse Can Xicarró FARMHOUSE CAN XICARRÓ GRAPHIC AND HISTORICAL STUDY OF THE FARMHOUSE IN VILANOVA I LA GELTRÚ AUTHOR: SERGIO LÓPEZ BAREA BUILDING ENGINEERING TUTOR: BENET MECA ACOSTA FINAL DEGREE PROJECT CALL: OCTOBER 2012 Introduction After making various visits and compiling a variety of information, the focus of this thesis will be on The farmhouse Can Xicarró which is located in Polygon 1 42 (b) Vilanova i the Geltrú (Barcelona) This thesis will focus on the masía’s astonishing history and architecture, factors which inspired me to research and study this project. In order to develop this thesis, a series of sketches were carried out in which information about floors, elevations, sections and details were compiled. On the other hand, in order to complete the historical analysis, photographs and books about farmhouse were researched. The records of this spectacular construction show that there has been housing in Can Xicarró since 1497, in other words, only five years after the discovery of the Americas. It should be noted that it was formally known the Farmhouse of the Planas which was owned by Pere Ballester. Subsequently Manuel Olivella Sama acquired it in the nineteenth century, and converted it to a Neo-Mudejar style characterized by stone arches, ornate tiles and brick. At this time it was fashionable to demonstrate wealth. The location had many hectares of vineyards, which were used for the production of the wine and were stored in the warehouses adjacent to the main house. Due to the small stature of the owner, the name of Las Planes was changed to Xicarró, meaning “little man” in Catalan. The main facade was named “Villa Rosa” in honor of the granddaughter of Olivella who unfortunately died before her time. During the Civil War, Mr. Olivella or his son bet in various casinos. In order to pay these outstanding gambling debts and pieces of the homestead were sold. Subsequently, the house became an orphanage. However, by the year 2000, John Duffi of Scotland (and in addition one of the people who took care of us during the project) bought the house and slowly began renovating it little by little. According to the historical archives, a feudal lord of Geltrú enacted a law which stated that the recently married must spend their first wedding night with him, Finally, in the mid-twentieth century while in the process of offering new products, the industry made a wager for the metal and chemical factories. For this reason, inhabitants of La Geltrú migrated to territories near the sea, such as Cubellas. This chosen stetting therefore became a new town, and over the years the two towns merged. Evolution of the Textile industry municipality In 1274, Vilanova i la Geltru, founded by King Jaime the First, granted the Municipal Charter. It underwent major changes from its origins in the 11th century until the 16th century, when its evolu- tion peaked and a prototype was reached for Catalonia as a whole. For this reason, in the subsequent centuries the model did not change, but building elements were added to it in order to adapt the home to the times. Catalan farmhouses are a historical testimony, and their changes and enlargements always reflect the needs of their inhabitants and the technological possibilities of the period. Germany and other major importing countries such as the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Denmark rely on high import rates to meet the national consumption. This study aimed at providing a detailed picture of the thatching reed market in Northern Germany and at assessing the market potential for reed of regional origin. A written survey among all thatchers in Northern Germany was carried out in 2019, arriving at an effective sample of 47 out of 141 companies. The results revealed that for the responding companies the majority of the reed (59%) was used for rethatching roofs completely, 24% for newly constructed roofs, and 17% for roof repairs. Reed from Germany held a low share of 17% of the total consumption in 2018. Own reed harvesting was conducted by less than 9% of the responding companies and given up during the last decades by another 26%. The total market volume of reed for thatching in Northern Germany was estimated for 2018 with a 95% confidence interval at 3 0.8 million bundles of reed with a monetary value at ± sales prices of ¿11.6 2.8 million.

Head of the Parkinson’ s disease and other movement disorders unit, Department of Neurology, Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron, Barcelona, Spain. Doctor of neuroscience. Associate director of the Museo Archivo Histórico of the Spanish Society of Neurology. ABSTRACT Introduction. This article describes various historical aspects of healthcare at Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron. Methods. Documentation was collected and reviewed from the historical archive of the city of Barcelona, the archives of the Diocese of Barcelona, and the historical archive of the Centre Excursionista de Catalunya, the manuscripts section of the Biblioteca de Catalunya, and the literature on the Hieronymite monastery of Saint Jerome in Vall d’Hebron and Hospital Vall d’Hebron. Data of healthcare and neurological interest were collected. Results. Today’ s Hospital Vall d’Hebron stands on the site of a farm that belonged to the royal monastery of Saint Jerome in Vall d’Hebron. The monastery, of which only traces remain today, had an infirmary, pharmacy, hostelry, and a hospital for the poor, and provided healthcare to Hieronymite monks, guests, pilgrims, and poor people from the time of its foundation (1393) to its secularisation (1835). The monastery was used as a lazaretto during the yellow fever and cholera epidemics in Barcelona, in 1821 and 1834, respectively. The 1903 urban plan for greater Barcelona allocated the area for the “placement of a hospital.” The fact that the land was owned by the state and the site’ s salutary characteristics made it ideal for the construction of a large healthcare complex outside of the city centre: the Residencia Sanitaria Francisco Franco (1955).

La Masia Freixa revisitada Freixa La Masia Abstract The Masia Freixa, designed by the architect Lluís Muncunill, is one of the key works to understand Catalan modernism in Terrassa. Up to now, the work had been dated between 1907 and 1910, but the discovery of billing documents that belonged to the work, now stored in the Comarcal Historical Archives of Terrassa, has made us possible to study the whole construction process and establish project development’s date in the mid 1905’s. ABSTRACT: The use of traditional techniques when restoring a masia is always the primary consideration in the preliminary phase of the project and during the site work. The virtues of traditional techniques compared to industrial production systems are described from multiple points of view: as a sustainable contemporary strategy, as generators of healthy spaces , as virtues of social and territorial scale, as a better formal contextualisation due to the limitations of pre-industrial materials. These are virtues that the industrial system has forgotten. The purpose of the Can Buch project (a masia in Northen Catalonia, Spain) was to restore the main house, some sheds and a barn, to enable rural ecotourism and to create a residence for the owner and future manager of the property. The promoter of the project intended to apply the values of permaculture. Maximising the use of Km0 materials from the start emphasised this intention. If we understand the traditional farmhouse as the site's resource map, applying this reality to the present work means recovering original representative principles. Currently, the project is in the last phase of works, but the results of applying this philosophy are already visible.
