Oromia is the largest National Regional State of Ethiopia. Here we present the first comprehensive checklist of its birds. A total of 804 bird species has been recorded, 601 of them confirmed (443) or assumed (158) to be breeding birds. At least 561 are all-year residents (and 31 more potentially so), at least 73 are Afrotropical migrants and visitors (and 44 more potentially so), and 184 are Palaearctic migrants and visitors (and eight more potentially so). Three species are endemic to Oromia, 18 to Ethiopia and 43 to the Horn of Africa. 170 Oromia bird species are biome restricted: 57 to the Afrotropical Highlands biome, 95 to the Somali-Masai biome, and 18 to the Sudan-Guinea Savanna biome. -

AEWA/MOP 7.28 AFRICAN-EURASIAN MIGRATORY WATERBIRDS Agenda item: 20 Original: English 06 September 2018 7th SESSION OF THE MEETING OF THE PARTIES 04-08 December 2018, Durban, South Africa “Beyond 2020: Shaping flyway conservation for the future” PLASTICS AND WATERBIRDS: INCIDENCE AND IMPACTS (Compiled by Peter Ryan, FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology, University of Cape Town, South Africa, on behalf of RSPB) Background Through Resolution 6.9, the Meeting of the Parties recognised the potential impacts to migratory seabirds resulting from the ingestion of plastics, microplastics and other forms of marine litter (marine debris), recalled the CMS Resolutions 10.4 and 11.30 on marine debris, requiring Parties to work collectively and with the relevant Regional Seas Conventions on reducing the impacts of marine debris on migratory species and requested the Technical Committee, subject to the availability of financial and in-kind resources, in consultation with CMS, to assess any threats posed to migratory seabirds listed by AEWA from the ingestion of plastics, of microplastics and other forms of marine litter (marine debris) and to provide advice on appropriate responses in this regard to the Meeting of Parties. This task had required outsourcing and thanks to the generous funding provided by the Government of the Netherlands, the production of a review to assess the threats of plastics and microplastics to AEWA seabird populations was commissioned to RSPB and the BirdLife International Global Seabirds Programme, albeit late in the triennium. It was reviewed by the Technical and Standing Committees and approved for submission to MOP7 in August 2018. -

Nigerian Conservation Foundation/Hadejia-Nguru Wetlands Conservation Project, Nguru, Yobe State, Nigeria. *Corresponding author: Email: [email protected] Abstract Anthropogenic disturbances have been found to be one of the key drivers of changes in bird populations as observed with dramatic consequences among the bird assemblages of Hadejia-Nguru Ramsar Wetland and elsewhere globally. We assessed the effects of farming, fishing, and grazing on bird species richness and density in Protected Areas (PAs) and Unprotected Areas (UPAs) of the Hadejia- Nguru Wetlands. Anthropogenic activities (grazing, fishing, and farming) at four different disturbance scales based on the level of anthropogenic activities: No, Low, Moderate and Intense were observed, assessed and recorded in PAs and UPAs of the Wetland. Results showed that farming, fishing and grazing had more negative influence on bird species richness, compared to bird densities and the species richness decreased significantly as intensity of these activities became more intensive (p < 0.001). The results also indicated that fishing had more negative influences on bird species richness than farming and grazing. This could lead to reduction of bird density in both areas if not checked. Management of both areas should ensure the long-term conservation of resident, intra-African and Palearctic migratory birds in the Hadejia-Nguru Wetlands. It is also recommended that anthropogenic activities within the wetland should be minimized in order to conserve the bird community and other wildlife. -

16 Short communications Short communications Birds of the College of African Wildlife Management, Mweka, Tanzania The College of African Wildlife Management, Mweka (often simply ‘Mweka College’; hereafter ‘Mweka’) has been an important institution for training wildlife and tour- ism professionals since the early 1960s. Many students get their first introduction to formal ornithology at Mweka. The objective of this paper is to serve this constituency with a description of the avifauna of the site. The list should also be useful to residents of the area and the many ecotourists who visit Kilimanjaro via Mweka. Mweka lies on the south slope of Mount Kilimanjaro at about 1400 m elevation (3°14’S, 37°19’E, Fig. 1). The site receives about 1700 mm of annual rainfall, and has a mean temperature of 18.7° C (https://en.climate-data.org/africa/tanzania/kili- manjaro/mweka-205889/#temperature-graph). The Mweka entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park (KNP) is about 2.5 km north of campus at 1650 m elevation. Forest is protected within KNP, and this montane forest once extended to Mweka. Presently, forest patches persist mostly on steeper slopes. Land use around the Mweka campus includes an adjacent village to the north, small shambas (mixed agriculture with ba- nanas, coffee, maize, and vegetables), several larger maize fields and pastures, and coffee agriculture. The largest stream in the area runs along the west border of cam- pus, eventually connecting to the Karanga River. A small swampy area east of cam- pus provided the only standing water within the study area in 2014–2015. -

CAMEROON 6 MARCH – 2 APRIL 2011 TOUR REPORT LEADER: NIK BORROW Cameroon may not be a tour for those who like their creature comforts but it certainly produces a huge bird list and if one intends to only ever visit one western African country then this is surely an essential destination. Our comprehensive itinerary covers a superb and wide range of the varied habitats that this sprawling country has to offer. Despite unexpectedly missing some species this year, perhaps due to the result of the previous rainy season coming late with the result that everywhere was greener but somehow inexplicably drier we nonetheless amassed an impressive total of 572 species or recognisable forms of which all but 15 were seen. These included 26 of the regional endemics; Cameroon Olive Pigeon, Bannerman’s Turaco, Mountain Saw-wing, Cameroon Montane, Western Mountain, Cameroon Olive and Grey-headed Greenbuls, Alexander’s (split from Bocage’s) Akalat, Mountain Robin Chat, Cameroon and Bangwa Forest Warblers, Brown-backed Cisticola, Green Longtail, Bamenda Apalis, White-tailed Warbler, Black-capped Woodland Warbler, Banded Wattle-eye, White-throated Mountain Babbler, Cameroon and Ursula’s Sunbirds, Mount Cameroon Speirops, Green-breasted and Mount Kupe Bush-shrikes, Yellow-breasted Boubou, Bannerman’s Weaver and Shelley’s Oliveback. This year we once again found the recently rediscovered Chad Firefinch and the restricted range Rock Firefinch (first discovered in the country in 2005 by Birdquest). We found several Quail-plovers and a male Savile’s Bustard in the Waza area as well as a wonderful Green-breasted/African Pitta, Black Guineafowl and Vermiculated Fishing Owl in Korup National Park.
