My dissertation answers the following question: how are Chicana/o assertions of cultural Indigeneity, intrinsically parallel and related to Chicana/o participation in Indigenous transnational struggles? The underlying premises for my investigation of Chicana/o Indigeneity are the following subquestions: how do transnational these efforts enrich our understanding of the respect of human rights, and what are the bases of Chicana/o Indigeneity? I explicate how Chicana/o historic consciousness is influenced by the complex transnational activism with Indigenous Peoples to decolonize the Americas and contend that Chicana/o Indigenist activists, informed by trans-border interactions, cultural practices, and long oral traditions challenged hegemonic constraints of Indigeneity constructed by Mexican and U.S. pro-western domination premised ii assimilationist projects. These challenges have resulted in Chicana/o participation in broader challenges to the prominence of western cultural hegemony in the nation-states of the Americas. I depict groups and organizations comprising a specific activism that challenge assimilation and contribute to the prominence of contemporary Indigenismo or Indigenism as a cultural and political ideology. This activism, which seeds and stimulates Indigenism, instills calls for cultural assertion within international human rights advocacy. I focus on Chicana/o activists, activist organizations, and cultural groups that demanded the right to revive their Indigenous culture, and in doing so, aligned their cultural revival with the right to cultural survival that is integral to the demands of Indigenous Peoples. Since the late 1960s, the objective of Chicana/o statements on Indigeneity have provided the forum for a discussion regarding a culturally autonomous trajectory for Chicanas and Chicanos free of colonial logics, hegemonic cultures, and oppression. By no means has this road been straight forward and without equivocations. Nevertheless, by the 1980s and well into the twenty-first century, most Chicana/o and Indigenous activists stood generally unified by certain precepts and agreements despite national borders in their efforts to redress the violation of human rights in the Americas. iii This dissertation of José Luis Serrano Nájera is approved. That trip awoke in me a desire to understand Mexican Indigeneity and put together fragmented memories of my own cultural history back together. After returning from this trip, my interest in Indigeneity coalesced with my desire to teach history while working with high-school youth as part of MEChA de UCLA’s Xinachtli outreach program. These early years were the foundation of my trajectory as an educator and historian. I first began asking questions about Indigeneity and Chicana/o social movements in my undergraduate seminar on the History of the Chicana/o Movement led by Professor Juan Gómez- Quiñones. He has helped guide my research since then, and along with Professor Irene Vásquez, helped realize the first stage of this project, which eventually became my master’s thesis while a student at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). I thank both professors Gómez-Quiñones and Vásquez for their mentorship that continues today. Along with Professor Munashe Furusa, professors Gómez-Quiñones and Vásquez helped be begin to elaborate my arguments about Indigeneity during the Chicana/o Movement. The research for expanding my focus of Chicana/o Indigeneity in the context of transnational Indigenous Peoples movements would not have been possible without the financial support of the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center and the UCLA American Indian Studies Center. Through grants from the UCLA Institute of American Cultures, these centers helped make possible my travel to archive repositories across the Southwestern U.S. and Mexico City and for me to interview prominent activists involved in these movements.     Communication Quarterly Vol. 60, No. 5, November–December 2012, pp. 561–587 Reclaiming the Rhetoric of Reies Lo´ pez Tijerina: Border Identity and Agency in ‘‘The Land Grant Question’’ Josue David Cisneros Chicano activist Reies Tijerina’s speech known as ‘‘The Land Grant Question’’ provides a point of analysis in this article for assessing contradictory understandings of Tijerina and his movement, La Alianza Federal de Mercedes. The author explores how in both its rhetorical content and form, Tijerina’s speech navigated and negotiated identity and agency for the Alianza and Mexican Americans. The speech represents border rhetoric, a type of vernacular discourse that migrates across borders, sustains contradictions, and crafts a middle space. Reclaiming Tijerina’s rhetoric extends Chicano movement studies, illuminates notions of rhetorical agency, and highlights a rhetorically-inflected notion of the border. INTRODUCTION Reies Lopez Tijerina focused the world's attention on the plight of the frequently overlooked Mexican-American commu- nity of northern New Mexico. Tijerina was one of the organizers of the infamous Courthouse Raid of June 5, 1967, in Tierra Amarilla, New Mexico. This comment presents an historical overview of the literature regarding the Tierra Amarilla land grant and the Courthouse Raid. The struggle for the Tierra Amarilla land rights continues today. Like Native Americans, Hispanics continue to struggle to reclaim the land they believe is rightfully theirs. Both groups share a belief that the United States government has not honored its obligations under treaties signed after military conquest of their lands.1 The Mexican-Americans of the Tierra Amarilla are a land-based people.2 Many believe that the land is essential for the survival of the culture indigenous to the Tierra Amarilla and northern New Mexico.3 This comment concludes that the pov- erty and disillusionment of the people in Tierra Amarilla is re- lated to their inability to obtain land rights. Historical biographies have been attacked because they muddy our positive view of popular leaders in movements that remain salient in the twenty-rst century. Some historians, however, write narratives that are powerful and controversial simply because the historical subject was nowhere near perfect, even crossing boundaries that we consider violent and abusive. This is the case for one of the most inuential gures in the history of the Chicano Movement, Reies López Tijerina. Evangelical preacher and prophet turned leader of the Alianza Federal de Mercedes (Federal Land Grant Alliance], Tijerina’s life is chock-full of both violent and inspiring actions and decisions. Lorena Oropeza’s new book, The King of Adobe: Reies López Tijerina, Lost Prophet of the Chicano Movement, skillfully exposes the contradictions of a signicant historical character as historians of the Chicano Movement seem to lose sight of his monumental importance in the ght for land rights in the U.S. Southwest. Taking readers from Tijerina’s early childhood in Texas to the last years of his life, Oropeza creates a fascinating biographical account of a man with controversial and radical ideas.

This dissertation draws from a diverse collection of archived writings and publicity materials produced by La Alianza over the span of its roughly 15 year existence and situates the movement as a rich site of cultural production. I consider these documents as an archive of subaltern history writing that countered nationalist histories that naturalize private property and sanction collective amnesia of Mexican and Native land dispossession under US sovereignty. By offering a sustained and critical engagement with La Alianza’s history writing, this dissertation examines the movement’s use of Indo-Hispano as a term invoking a past of mestizaje distinct from dominant Chicana/o imaginings of mestizaje. My analysis reveals the complex ties between Indo-Hispano and the political economy of New Mexican land grant tenure and dispossession.

    The Mission District – A History of Resistance for the Mission Anti-Displacement Coalition Draft: Fernando Martí, December 2006 AsianNeighborhoodDesign The Mission District – A History of Resistance Aquí Estamos y No Nos Vamos! 230 Years of Resistencia en la Misión The First Displacements The first recorded eviction in what is now called the Mission District occurred in 1776. The Spanish arrival forced the Ohlone, who had lived in the region for at least 5,000 years, to flee across the Bay. Those who remained were forced into labor on the new Mission Dolores. The first Mission “anti- displacement movement” occurred soon after, with an Indian uprising on Mission lands that same year. Within thirty years, most wildlife was gone, and the freshwater streams had been contaminated by animal and human waste. The Ohlone were gradually decimated by disease, famine, and exhaustion. After Mexico’s Independence in 1821, those who survived became serfs on the new ranchos. By 1832, the Ohlone population had been reduced from a high of over 10,000 in 1770 to less than 2,000. In the Mission itself, records from 1833 and 1841 indicate that the Native American population decreased from 400 to only 50. After the Mexican-American War and the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, the new U.S. government that took control of San Francisco from Mexico passed laws allowing Anglo squatters to take possession of the Mexican land-grant ranchos in the Mission.
