Abstract An updated inventory of the Bromeliaceae for Costa Rica is presented including citations of representa- tive specimens for each species. The family comprises 18 genera and 198 species in Costa Rica, 32 spe- cies being endemic to the country. Additional 36 species are endemic to Costa Rica and Panama. Only 4 of the 8 bromeliad subfamilies occur in Costa Rica, with a strong predominance of Tillandsioideae (7 genera/150 spp.; 75.7% of all bromeliad species in Costa Rica). -

They are most always epiphytic growing on trees and shrubs to gain better access to sunlight; an occasional species is found on rocks or on the ground (e.g., T. dasyliriifolia). Many have gray/silvery, scaly leaves (e.g., T. pruinosa, T. streptophylla). The scales (or “trichomes”) help capture water and nutrients from the environment. Some spe- cies form water-holding tanks by means of their overlapping leaves. These tanks are rich with nutrients from the environment, provide sustenance for the plant, and create important habitat for animals in the forest canopy. The genus is found throughout Belize, but reaches its peak of species diversity on the high summits of the Maya Mountains. -

[email protected] ABSTRACT The current knowledge of the bromeliad flora of the state of Oaxaca, Mexico is presented. Oaxaca is the Mexican state with the largest number of bromeliad species. Based on the study of 2,624 herbarium specimens corresponding to 1,643 collections, and a detailed bibliographic revision, we conclude that the currently known bromeliad flora for Oaxaca comprises 172 species and 15 genera. All Mexican species of the genera Bromelia, Fosterella, Greigia, Hohenbergiopsis, Racinaea, and Vriesea are represented in the state. Aechmea nudicaulis, Bromelia hemisphaerica, Catopsis nitida, C. oerstediana, C. wawranea, Pitcairnia schiedeana, P. tuerckheimii, Racinaea adscendens, Tillandsia balbisiana, T. belloensis, T. brachycaulos, T. compressa, T. dugesii, T. foliosa, T. flavobracteata, T. limbata, T. maritima, T. ortgiesiana, T. paucifolia, T. pseudobaileyi, T. rettigiana, T. utriculata, T. x marceloi, Werauhia pycnantha, and W. nutans are recorded for the first time from Oaxaca. Collections from 226 (of 570) municipalities and all 30 districts of the state were studied. Among the vegetation types occurring in Oaxaca, oak forest is the richest with 83 taxa, followed by tropical deciduous forest with 74, and cloud forest with 73 species. -

Growing Bromeliads Epiphytically in the Subtropical Home Garden Kerry Booth Tate (as published in the BSI Journal, May-June 2003, Revised August 2017) Most bromeliad growers I know, and know of, cultivate their plants in pots under shade cloth, or some form of protective structure. This is necessary when climatic conditions do not replicate the bromeliads’ natural habitat. However, for those lucky gardeners who live in a subtropical climate, as I do, growing bromeliads in trees of the home garden can be successful and very effective. I have many established trees in my garden, thanks to the previous owners. Moving here from a cool-temperate region, I was greatly impressed and inspired by a huge flowering clump of the common Billbergia pyramidalis, climbing the trunk of an old Silky Oak (Grevillea robusta). Since then, my trees have become living sculptures – embellished with their ornaments, it’s like Christmas all year! With each new bromeliad purchase, I research its origin and growth habit in the literature available (pre internet access and the realm of international forums and facebook!), and decide where and under which conditions it might thrive. When tying a bromeliad onto the branch or trunk of a tree, I do not use sphagnum moss around the root area of the plant. Sometimes, a purchased pot-grown bromeliad already has an established root ball including pine chunks. This can be easier to secure to a branch, especially if the plant is not stoloniferous. Well-grown pups, with an obvious stolon, can be tied directly onto the upper side of a branch very easily. -

NUMBER 20 MUNN-ESTRADA: FLORA OF THE SIERRA MAZATECA OF OAXACA, MEXICO 25 CONTRIBUTION TO THE FLORISTIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE SIERRA MAZATECA OF OAXACA,MEXICO Diana Xochitl Munn-Estrada Harvard Museums of Science & Culture, 26 Oxford St., Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138 Email: [email protected] Abstract: The Sierra Mazateca is located in the northern mountainous region of Oaxaca, Mexico, between the Valley of Tehuaca´n-Cuicatla´n and the Gulf Coastal Plains of Veracruz. It is part of the more extensive Sierra Madre de Oaxaca, a priority region for biological research and conservation efforts because of its high levels of biodiversity. A floristic study was conducted in the highlands of the Sierra Mazateca (at altitudes of ca. 1,000–2,750 m) between September 1999 and April 2002, with the objective of producing an inventory of the vascular plants found in this region. Cloud forests are the predominant vegetation type in the highland areas, but due to widespread changes in land use, these are found in different levels of succession. This contribution presents a general description of the sampled area and a checklist of the vascular flora collected during this study that includes 648 species distributed among 136 families and 389 genera. The five most species-rich angiosperm families found in the region are: Asteraceae, Orchidaceae, Rubiaceae, Melastomataceae, and Piperaceae, while the largest fern family is Polypodiaceae.
