The Hindu, the Muslim, and the Border In
THE HINDU, THE MUSLIM, AND THE BORDER IN NATIONALIST SOUTH ASIAN CINEMA Vinay Lal University of California, Los Angeles Abstract There is but no question that we can speak about the emergence of the (usually Pakistani or Muslim) ‘terrorist’ figure in many Bollywood films, and likewise there is the indisputable fact of the rise of Hindu nationalism in the political and public sphere. Indian cinema, however, may also be viewed in the backdrop of political developments in Pakistan, where the project of Islamicization can be dated to least the late 1970s and where the turn to a Wahhabi-inspired version of Islam is unmistakable. I argue that the recent history of Pa- kistan must be seen as instigated by a disavowal of the country’s Indic self, and similarly I suggest that scholarly and popular studies of the ‘representation’ of the Muslim in “Bol- lywood” rather too easily assume that such a figure is always the product of caricature and stereotyping. But the border between Pakistan and India, between the self and the other, and the Hindu and the Muslim is rather more porous than we have imagined, and I close with hints at what it means to both retain and subvert the border. -

Firstly, the outbreak epicentres round a major American city and secondly, the protagonist finds a stash of ammunition with which he defends himself from hordes of the undead. As a child, I was inquisitive on the question that on event of such an outbreak in my home-state; where can I get supplies of ammunition from? Since I lived in a country with strict gun-laws, I have to admit, at that point of time, I did prefer living in a pro-gun rights society where ammunition is in abundance and by such means, I could defend myself when a horde pays me a visit through my front door! The law that helps the protagonist to find ammunition in the “World’s greatest Nation” is the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America. Passed by the Congress on September 25, 1789, it is one of the components of the ‘Bill of Rights.’ The Amendment reads; “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The peculiar construction of the amendment has led to speculations as to what were the true intentions of the founding fathers when adding this provision. -

Indian Cinema, Postcolonialism, and Social Justice: an Interview with Nandita Das1
Postcolonial Text, Vol 13, No 3 (2018) Indian Cinema, Postcolonialism, and Social Justice: An Interview with Nandita Das1 Manav Ratti Salisbury University, Maryland, USA Introduction Nandita Das (b. 1969) is one of India’s most eminent filmmakers and actors, renowned in particular for her work in art cinema (or parallel cinema, as it is also called in India), the genre of pioneering filmmakers Ritwik Ghatak (1925-1976), Satyajit Ray (1921-1992), Mrinal Sen (b. 1923), and Tapan Sinha (1924-2009). Das (Figure 1) has, in some respects, pursued an unconventional path into the Indian film industry, for it is not her first professional pursuit, and she does not hail from a film family (distinguished in their fields, her father, Jatin Das, is a painter; and her mother, Varsha Das, is a writer). Born in Mumbai and growing up in New Delhi, Das worked with NGOs for several years before entering the film industry, building on her Master’s degree from the Delhi School of Social Work in the University of Delhi. Fig. 1. Nandita Das at the Cannes Film Festival, 2017. Photo courtesy of Nandita Das Perhaps this unconventional, even outsider’s, path has informed Das’s use of films to question the norms of gender, religion, caste, sexuality, class, and nation, among others. Her work has gained recognition and respect for its uniqueness, urgency, awareness, and authenticity. Known for her social justice advocacy, Das’s national and international commitments span a range of issues, such as violence against women, children’s rights, HIV/AIDS, poverty, and interreligious harmony. She has supported India’s “Dark is Beautiful” campaign, which raises awareness about colourism, a form of prejudice and discrimination that devalues darker skin colours while privileging lighter ones. -
The Fight for Uttar Pradesh West by Anupama Ghosh for Any Lok
Centre for Public Policy Research Independent. In-depth. Insightful The Fight for Uttar Pradesh West By Anupama Ghosh For any Lok Sabha elections, Uttar Pradesh (UP) is a crucial state, comprising the largest number of seats and one of the largest electorates. The western part of the state, popularly known as UP West or Paschim Pradesh, is markedly different from the other divisions of the state. The region comprises vast swathes of agricultural lands, growing sugarcane and potato, which co-exist with parts which have witnessed exponential economic growth because of the region’s proximity to Delhi and the National Capital Region. Similar to the past elections, it seems that UP will be a prized catch and will make an interesting contest. What Makes UP West Crucial? The electorate of UP is an amalgamation of communities, castes and sub-castes. The state has one of the largest proportions of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) and Muslims in the country. The castes and communities like the Jats, Yadavs, Dalits, Jatavs, Thakurs, Rajputs, Gujjars, Brahmins and Muslims call this region of UP West, home. It is the interplay within these castes and communities which makes it an election to watch out for. The last Lok Sabha election is mostly considered to be a wave-election, which was swept by the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) with Narendra Modi at its helm. It may also go down in the electoral history of India as the one election in which the boundaries of the numerous castes and communities were transcended effectively. The BJP Strongholds in 2009 and 2014 Elections In a total of 29 seats in UP West, the BJP swept through 26 of them in the 2014 election. -
