Minzy said she left the popular K-pop idol group 2NE1 and did not renew her contract with YG Entertainment to pursue her own style of music. "As my contract expired, I had to make a decision to show my new sides, how much I have grown," Minzy said during the press conference for her new solo album at Shinhan Card Fan Square Live Hall in western Seoul, Monday. "I wanted to do music that gives energy to people and empathizes with people, so I had to write my own songs. "But in YG, there are fancy lineups of music producers who I could never get anywhere close to. There, I was more of a listener and I was too young to give my opinion." Minzy added that she would never have made it if YG hadn't been there as she learned to sing and dance. However, the singer also hinted that if YG was a place where she could dream of achieving her goal, her new agency Musicworks is a place where she can realize her dream. Minzy debuted as a member of 2NE1 in May 2009 under the hip-hop label YG Entertainment. The four-member act instantly came into the spotlight with its first TV commercial song "Lollipop," a collaboration with label mate BIGBANG. The next month, 2NE1 released its debut song "Fire," which became a K-pop sensation with its two music videos receiving over 1 million views in one day. Every song the group released since then swept music charts and won numerous awards. They won the "Song of the Year" awards at Mnet Asian Music Award in 2009 and 2011 with megahit "I Don't Care" and "I Am the Best," respectively. The New York Times named 2NE1's performance at the Prudential Center in New Jersey as one of the "Best Concerts of 2012" and in October of the same year, Forbes magazine reported that the group had sold 27 million digital downloads. YG Entertainment founder Yang Hyun-suk had once revealed on a TV show that 2NE1 would be his biggest ambition and he sees a brighter future for the girl group than his boy band BIGBANG. However, 2NE1 was met with crisis in 2014 when allegations arose that the band's lead singer Park Bom had smuggled drugs in 2010. Korean customs officers caught a package containing 82 amphetamine-containing pills in international shipping sent from the U.S. to Park, but the prosecution suspended her indictment as she had been legally prescribed the drug for a medical condition when she resided in the United States. Still, fans did not accept Park's explanation and turned their backs on the star, leading to the group's two-year hiatus. In May 2016, YG Entertainment officially announced that Minzy had decided to leave the team and that 2NE1 would continue without replacing her, but the group disbanded six months later with the departure of Park. Rapper CL and singer Dara signed new contracts with YG as soloists. Meanwhile, Minzy released her first mini-album "Minzy Work 01 Uno" as a soloist. The album includes "Ninano" featuring American rapper Jay "Flowsik" Pak. It has been three years since she last released the song "Crush" with 2NE1 in 2014. "Yang Hyun-suk has watched me grow as a musician since I was a sixth grader. I know he will be proud of me and I will bring my first album to him when it comes out," Minzy said. Minzy surprises crowd with 'Ninano' street performance. Joined by lots of local backup dancers - most of them fans - the K-pop idol blew away the crowd with her amazing dance performance. Imagine seeing your favourite Idol perform right in front of you as you walk by on the street! Or even being a fan and being able to join in and dance with them. We're totally envious! GLOBAL AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION IN THE PRUDUCTION AND CONSUMPTION OF GANGNAM STYLE by SOOKEUNG JUNG Under the Direction of Professor Hongmei Li ABSTRACT This thesis examines the cultural consumption of the Korean music video Gangnam Style in the broader context of the increasing popularity of Korean popular content, often called the Korean Wave, and of complex conditions of transnational consumption. Specifically, it in- vestigates why the music video Gangnam Style gained popularity not only in East Asia but also over the world, how it is circulated, and what conditions contribute to its success. It focuses on the role of the networked audiences and the interactions between the networked audiences and mainstream media through a chronological analysis on the distribution and reproduction process of Gangnam Style on YouTube. Through the case study of Gangman Style, this thesis attempts to rethink the established globalization theories and to suggest new perspective of cultural circula- tion in the globalized and digitalized media environment.

  • A Multimodal Discourse Analysis of Female K-Pop Music Videos
A MULTIMODAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF FEMALE K-POP MUSIC VIDEOS 1 A MULTIMODAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF FEMALE K-POP MUSIC VIDEOS by Chris K Brady A dissertation submitted to the College of Arts and Law of the University of Birmingham in part fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts In Applied Linguistics This dissertation consists of approximately 14,716 words Supervisor: Dr. Alexanne Don ELAL College of Arts & Law University of Birmingham Edgbaston, Birmingham B15 2TT United Kingdom September 2015 2 ABSTRACT This dissertation employs multimodal discourse analysis to investigate the semiotic choices made in two sets of K-pop music videos, using Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) framework for the grammar of visual design as well as van Leeuwen’s framework for pitch (1999) to investigate whether the two sets of videos serve to satisfy a male viewer or not. The analysis showed that the two sets of videos differed in that the SNSD videos did serve to satisfy a male viewer, whilst the 2NE1 videos did not. Whilst the two SNSD videos empowered a male viewer through representing the girls as infantilized and through positioning the male viewer as if he were the male on screen, the two 2NE1 videos did not satisfy or empower the male viewer but instead avoided or challenged the viewer through the use of oblique angles, particular types of clothing, and the actions of the girls themselves. 3 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my tutor for her help and advice during this dissertation, and I would like to thank my parents for their love and support.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by University of Southern Queensland ePrints Chapter # Jeremiah Jones and the Musical Crusade David Cleaver Prologue Jeremiah Jones and the Musical Crusade is a research case study presented as sto- ry.1 However, while narrative meanings within a story may stand alone, when a story is presented as formal research it will be better served with some explana- tion, given that the best interests of scholarship may be at stake. In that regard, prior to telling the story of Jeremiah,2 this prologue serves to support the use of story, and also help orientate the reader to theoretical aspects that were considered in the construction of this story. Nonetheless, the explanation provided does not serve as a justification or claim for validity. I suggest that any evaluation might take place in the form of an individual and community examination of its “reso- nance”—a more appropriate tool for this type of lifework.3 It is important to note that a cognitive shift may be required when moving from the prologue to the story, because, as Jerome Bruner describes, an explanatory, logical text is a result of a paradigmatic construal of reality or “way of seeing” and this is quite distinct from a narrative construal.4 Despite the difference be- tween these cognitive modes, I strive to present this prologue in as much a blend as possible—narrative in that (like Jeremiah Jones and the Musical Crusade) it 1 The original form was presented as part of my doctoral thesis (Cleaver, 2004).

  • The Globalization of K-Pop: Is K-Pop Losing Its Korean-Ness?
Situations Vol. 5 (Winter 2011) © 2011 by Yonsei University Yun-Jung Choi Teacher at the Writing Center (Yonsei University, Seoul) The Globalization of K-Pop: Is K-Pop Losing its Korean-ness? The recent news of Korean boy and girl bands making headlines in Eastern and Southern Asia, Europe and the US are sending new hopes and energy through the K-Pop (short for Korean Pop) industry following the surge of pride when the Korean Wave first hit Japan and China in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The spread of Korean music and the increasing popularity of its singers is mainly due to the three major entertainment companies that dominate the K-Pop market: SM Entertainment (SM), YG Entertainment (YG) and JYP Entertainment (JYPE). SM is the oldest and largest entertainment company in the Korean music scene. It gave birth to the first generation of K-Pop boy and girl groups, including H.O.T, Shinhwa and S.E.S. It now produces the more recent teenage idols, TVXQ, Super Junior, SHINee and Girls’ Generation. YG is known for its hip-hop and electronic sounds that are well represented by its current acts Big Bang and 2NE1. JYPE also has a lineup of idol groups under its name: Wonder Girls, 2AM, 2PM and miss A. As K-Pop’s influence and popularity continues to spread, the three entertainment companies are keenly trying to keep up with the demand and expectations of K-Pop audiences around the world. The three K-Pop powerhouses are incorporating experienced foreign—more precisely, Western—talent for both music and choreography in order to make K-Pop more appealing abroad.

  • Korean Or Konglish Pop Music? Jain Willis This Article Discusses the Use of English in Korean Popular Music
Putting the K in K-Pop: Korean or Konglish Pop Music? Jain Willis This article discusses the use of English in Korean popular music. First the author explored the motivations behind Korean music groups’ use of English. Next the author looked semantically at Korean band names that incorporate English words and Korean songs that incorporate English lyrics. She discussed what makes this new practice of incorporating English suc- cessful or unsuccessful in Korean pop music. The article concludes that the use of English in Korean pop music is becoming increasingly popular, and that this may be a bad thing if extra care isn’t taken to ensure accuracy.w Korean popular music (known as K-Pop) is sweeping the globe. Korean pop artist PSY’s “Gangnam Style” is currently the only video on YouTube to receive over one billion views. From Asia to Europe to South America, and yes, even to the United States, K-Pop has found millions of fans worldwide. K-Pop groups—like the boy bands of the nineties—dance and sing their way to fame with the help of sometimes carefully constructed good looks, outrageous clothing, catchy songs, and impressive choreography. Some companies start training their soon-to-be K-Pop stars, known as idols, as early as twelve years old. Idols are prepped for fame through years of lessons on all they need to become a hit, including learning to speak English. But native English speakers may not be able to understand the English in K-Pop songs, as it frequently doesn’t make any sense.
