These poorly studied projections arise as extensions either of external spiral cords or of interspaces between cords. This paper describes taxonomic, phylogenetic, architectural and func- tional aspects of serrations. Cord-associated serrations occur in cerithiids, strombids, the personid Distorsio anus, ocenebrine muricids and some cancellariids. Interspace-associated serrations are phylo- genetically much more widespread, and occur in at least 16 family-level groups. The nature of serration may be taxonomically informative in some fissurellids, littorinids, strombids and costellariids, among other groups. Serrated outer lips occur only in gastropods in which the apex points more backward than upward, but the presence of serrations is not a necessary byproduct of the formation of spiral sculp- tural elements. -

Samples were taken with a Van Veen grab and net trawls at depths between 40 and 98 m. Substrates consisted of medium sand, sandy silt and silty clay. Previous range distributions of eight species (Cosmiconcha rehderi, Cyclostremiscus planospira, Knefastia howelli, Kurtzia elenensis, Leptadrillia fìrmichorda, Mirachelus galapagensis, Nassarina perata and Phos fusoides) included localities between Guerrero, Mexico, and Ecuador. Previous records of the other nine species (Parvanachis albodonosa, Atilliosa carmen, Knefastia walkeri, Kylix paziana, Mitrella dorma, M. xenia, Strombina solidula, Sulcoretusa paziana and Turritela anactor) included localities in the Gulf of California, Sinaloa and Nayarit, Mexico. These species belong to two subclasses, four orders, eight families and tifteen genera of gastropods. Classifications based on shell or radular characters are highly contradictory and disputed. Whereas the monophyly of the Conidae and Terebridae has not been challenged, the http://mollus.oxfordjournals.org/ other constituents of the superfamily are placed in a ‘trash’ group, the turrids, the non-monophyly of which has been demonstrated by anatomical and molecular evidence. We present here a new molecu- lar phylogeny based on a total of 102 conoidean genera (87 ‘turrids’, 5 cones and 10 terebrids) and three mitochondrial genes [cytochrome oxidase I (COI), 12S rRNA and 16S rRNA]. -

INTRODUCTION, SYSTEMATIC SURVEY AND PAGE REFERENCES The first part of this work, published in 1969, is a general introduction to the Suriname marine Mollusca; in the second part, published in 1971, the Bivalvia and Scaphopoda were treated; in this third and last part the Gastropoda and Cephalopoda are dealt with. The system adopted in this part is that of Thiele (1929, 1931), but more or less altered at several places, in nomenclature as well as in se- quence. The holotypes of the species described by the author (1965, 1966, 1968, 1971a and in this paper) are placed in the Rijksmuseum van Na- tuurlijke Historie at Leiden, except the holotype of Solariorbis guianensis Altena which is in the Surinaams Museum at Paramaribo. The Suri- naams Museum holds also paratypes of the other new species described by the author and specimens of about all the species found on the shell ridges, washed ashore, or dredged off the coast of Suriname as far as they were mentioned in Part II and III of this publication.
