EMERSON' INTRODUCTION The present paper continues a study of the Recent marine mollusks collected in west Mexican waters during the course of the expedition. Previous reports considered the family Conidae (Emerson and Old, 1962), the superfamily Cypraeacea (Emerson and Old, 1963a), and the super- families Strombacea, Tonnacea, and Cymatiacea (Emerson and Old, 1963b). The present report treats the gastropod families Harpidae, Vasi- dae, and Volutidae. Specimens were taken by shore and intertidal collecting, by skin div- ing, and by dredging from a small skiff and from the schooner "Puritan." Dredging operations were restricted to depths no greater than 50 fathoms. The itinerary and descriptions of the collecting stations were recorded in the general account of the expedition (Emerson, 1958). The present collection contains three of the four eastern Pacific species that represent the families covered by this paper. [email protected]. edu.co RESUMEN Se estudi la composicin y abundancia de los moluscos bentnicos encontrados en el departamento de La Guajira al norte del Caribe colombiano. Para esto se realiz un crucero de investigacin a bordo del B/I Ancn del INVEMAR en donde se llevaron a cabo arrastres a 10 y 50 m de profundidad. Se recolect un total de 4840 individuos, identificndose 215 especies pertenecientes a las clases Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Scaphopoda, Cephalopoda y Polyplacophora, dentro de las cuales 19 fueron especies registradas por primera vez para el departamento. La clase Gastropoda present el mayor nmero de especies (52 %) y Bivalvia la mayor abundancia (71 % de los individuos), siendo el bivalvo Laevicardium sybariticum la especie ms abundante del rea de estudio. Los anlisis multivariados utilizados no mostraron patrones claramente definidos con relacin a la profundidad y el tipo de sedimento. Abstract Composition, diversity and abundance of rocky intertidal mollusks and their relationship with the environmental parameters, viz. water quality, total organic matter and calcium carbonate were determined. A total of 43 species were identified, of which 41 species belong to Class Gastropoda under 18 families and 2 species were categorized under Class Bivalvia from 2 families. Using several diversity indices, results revealed high diversity and equitability values in the 2 sampling sites. Moreover, comparison of the mollusks abundance between the 2 sampling stations showed station 2 to be dominantly abundant with Cerithium stercusmuscarum comprising almost one-third of the total population. Canonical Correspondence Analysis showed that total organic matter and calcium carbonate in the sediment may have influenced the abundance of mollusk assemblage in station 2. The results obtained from the study are vital in order to strongly support the need to continue monitoring the Lugait marine sanctuary and its nearby surroundings. -

Moluscos del Plioceno Superior marino de Isla Guamblín, Archipiélago de los Chonos, sur de Chile Daniel Frassinetti Museo Nacional de Historia Natural, Casilla 787, Santiago, Chile Vladimir Covacevich Servicio Nacional de Geologla y Minerla, Casilla 10465, Santiago, Chile RESUMEN Se describen y comentan siete especies fósiles de bivalvos y doce de gastrópodos, procedentes de Isla Guamblín, Archipiélago de los Chonos, sur de Chile. De ellas, Epitonium biroi, Polinices (Euspira) guamblinensis, Cymatium remotum, Ximenopsis? hero, Cryptogemma senexy Hindsiclava ignorata, Son propuestas como nuevas especies. La comparación de esta fauna COn diferentes asociaciones del Neógeno chileno, revela que su más estrecha relación se manifiesta con aquélla de la Fonnación Tubul, en Arauco, del Plioceno Superior, que se ubica UnOS 8SO km al norte de Isla Guamblrn. De acuerdo COn dicha evidencia, se propone esta edad para los fósiles de Isla Guamblrn y, consecuentemente, para los estratos portadores. La presencia de diferentes túrridos y algunos bivalvos pennite postular Un ambiente alejado de la costa, COn profundidades del orden de SO-100 m. Se propOnen como fósiles característicos del Plioceno Supe~or a los bivalvos Nuculana e/egans (Hupé), Chlamys tenuicostatus (Hupé), CarcJiocardita volckmanni (Philippi) y Eurhoma/ea araucana (Philippi). ABSTRAeT Upper Pliocene marine mollusks from Guamblín Island, los Chonos Archipelago, southern Chile. Among them, Epitonium biroi, Polinices (Euspira) guamblinensis, Cymatium remotum, Xymenopsis? hero, Cryptogemma senex and Hindsiclava ignorata, are proposed as new species. -

Abstract: Peru is an ecologically diverse country, with 84 life zones in the Holdridge system and 18 ecological regions (including two marine). 1910 molluscan species have been recorded. The highest number corresponds to the sea: 570 gastropods, 370 bivalves, 36 cephalopods, 34 polyplacoforans, 3 monoplacophorans, 3 scaphopods and 2 aplacophorans (total 1018 species). The most diverse families are Veneridae (57spp.), Muricidae (47spp.), Collumbellidae (40 spp.) and Tellinidae (37 spp.). Biogeographically, 56 % of marine species are Panamic, 11 % Peruvian and the rest occurs in both provinces; 73 marine species are endemic to Peru. Land molluscs include 763 species, 2.54 % of the global estimate and 38 % of the South American esti- mate. The most biodiverse families are Bulimulidae with 424 spp., Clausiliidae with 75 spp. and Systrophiidae with 55 spp. In contrast, only 129 freshwater species have been reported, 35 endemics (mainly hydrobiids with 14 spp. The paper includes an overview of biogeography, ecology, use, history of research efforts and conser- vation; as well as indication of areas and species that are in greater need of study. -
