Reserve. 3 Costa Rica is internationally recognized as one of the most biologically diverse countries on the planet in total species numbers for many taxonomic groups of flora and fauna, one of those being amphibians. Costa Rica has 190 species of amphibians known from within its tiny 51,032 square kilometers territory. With 3.72 amphibian species per 1,000 sq. km. of national territory, Costa Rica is one of the richest countries in the world regarding amphibian diversity density. Amphibians are under constant threat by contamination, deforestation, climatic change, and disease. The majority of Costa Rica’s amphibians are surrounded by mystery in regards to their basic biology and roles in the ecology. Through intense research in the natural environment and in captivity many important aspects of their biology and conservation can become better known. The Costa Rican Amphibian Research Center (C.R.A.R.C.) was established in 2002, and is a privately owned and operated conservational and biological research center dedicated to studying, understanding, and conserving one of the most ecologically important animal groups of Neotropical humid forest ecosystems, that of the amphibians. -

In this study we analyze the diet of a population of Dendropsophus branneri from a cocoa plantation in southern Bahia, Brazil. Frogs were captured monthly from August 2010 to July 2011. Stomach contents were retrieved through stomach-flushing and later identified to order level. Our results show that D. branneri feeds mainly on arthropds, such as Diptera, larval Lepidoptera and Araneae. Based on the identified food items and the low number of prey per stomach we conclude that the studied population of D. branneri uses a “sit and wait” strategy. We further conclude that stomach flushing can be successfully applied to frogs from a size of 14.4mm. We compared the virulence (measured as host mortality and infection burden) of hybrid Bd genotypes to the parental lineages, the putatively hypovirulent lineage Bd-Brazil and the hypervirulent Global Pandemic Lineage (Bd-GPL), in a panel of native Brazilian hosts. In Brachycephalus ephippium, the hybrid exceeded the virulence (host mortality) of both parents, suggesting that novelty arising from hybridization of Bd is a conservation concern. In Ischnocnema parva, host mortality in the hybrid treatment was intermediate between the parent treatments, suggesting that this species is more vulnerable to the aggressive phenotypes associated with Bd-GPL. Dendropsophus minutus showed low overall mortality, but infection burdens were higher in frogs treated with hybrid and Bd-GPL genotypes than with Bd-Brazil genotypes. Our experiment suggests that Bd hybrids have the potential to increase disease risk in native hosts. Continued surveillance is needed to track potential spread of hybrid genotypes and detect future genomic shifts in this dynamic disease system. Te host-parasite dynamic is a classic example of an evolutionary arms race; hosts face pressure to evolve defenses against parasites, while parasites face pressure to overcome host defenses1,2. -

Here, we establish a comprehensive amphibian barcode reference database in a central area of South America, in particular for specimens collected in Mato Grosso do Sul state (Brazil), and to evaluate the applicability of the COI gene for species-level identification. Both distance- and tree- based methods were applied for assessing species boundaries and the accuracy of specimen identification was evaluated. A total of 204 mitochondrial COI barcode sequences were evaluated from 22 genera and 59 species (19 newly barcoded species). Our results indicate that morphological and molecular identifications converge for most species, however, some species may present cryptic species due to high intraspecific variation, and there is a high efficiency of specimen identification. Thus, we show that COI sequencing can be used to identify anuran species present in this region.
