    33rd International Conference on Biomechanics in Sports, Poitiers, France, June 29 - July 3, 2015 Floren Colloud, Mathieu Domalain & Tony Monnet (Editors) Coaching and Sports Activities THE EXAMINATION OF UPPER LIMB AMBIDEXTERITY IN WRESTLING SNAP DOWN TECHNIQUE Nicholas DeCastro and Tom Wu Department of Movement Arts, Health Promotion and Leisure Studies, Bridgewater State University, Bridgewater MA, United States The purpose of this study was to bilaterally examine the kinematic motions of the upper extremity in the snap down technique. Six male collegiate wrestlers were recruited and performed a total of ten snaps, five from each side. A standard two-dimensional kinematic analysis was conducted in the upper extremity. The results showed no significant difference between right and left side in the angular displacement, velocity and acceleration. These findings indicated that upper limb ambidexterity was achieved by these college wrestlers in the study. From further video analysis, the study found some wrestlers appeared to use their shoulder and elbow as prime executors of the technique while other wrestlers utilized their hips.Upon this discovery, future studies are warranted to investigate the kinematics of lower extremity motion in the snap down technique. KEY WORDS: folk style, kinematics. INTRODUCTION: Wrestling is one of the oldest sports in recorded human history. Folk style is a subdivision of the sport most popular in United States high schools and universities. It differs from other forms because the focus is on wrestlers learning to control their opponents rather than developing explosive action. Within Folk style wrestling, pinning is achieved and points accrued through the technical and controlled application of a variety of moves and motions.

    BASIC WRESTLING FUNDAMENTALS PREPARED BY WARREN APPLEGATE Introduction I’ve tried to make sure that every step no matter how small was included in the following instructions. I think if you and a partner went through each step point by point, or a coach/observer reads the instructions to you and a workout partner, you’ll be able to figure out how to do each move fairly quickly. This written instruction was originally intended for use as a script for videotaping of instruction of these moves. This material was planned to make sure the clinician covered every point clearly and thoroughly. A successful wrestler needs to master only a couple of leg attack takedowns, and escape or reversal, a ride/breakdown, and one pinning combination. However, in order to master this small number of moves will require drilling regularly all of the possible setups, counters, and finishes. It has been my observation that the world-class wrestlers spend the majority of their time drilling the moves to perfection, and don’t really wrestle ‘live” that much. Of course during their careers they have wrestled “live” so much that most things are second nature to them. The following are the ten things that I believe are essential to become a champion. 1. Be academically eligible. If you are you aren’t allowed to compete you can’t be a champion no matter how good you are. 2. Be strong enough to not be over-powered by any opponent. It isn’t necessary to be the strongest wrestler, but it helps. You need enough upper body strength to neutralize your strongest opponent’s attempts to over power you.
