CHARACTERISTICS OF TEN TROPICAL HARDWOODS FROM CERTIFIED FORESTS IN BOLIVIA PART I WEATHERING CHARACTERISTICS AND DIMENSIONAL CHANGE R. Sam Williams Supervisory Research Chemist Regis Miller Botanist and John Gangstad Technician USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory1 Madison, WI 53705-2398 (Received July 2000) ABSTRACT Ten tropical hardwoods from Bolivia were evaluated for weathering performance (erosion rate, dimensional stability, warping, surface checking, and splitting). The wood species were Amburana crarensis (roble), Anudenanthera macrocarpa (curupau), Aspidosperma cylindrocarpon Cjichituriqui), Astronium urundeuva (cuchi), Caesalpinia cf. pluviosa (momoqui), Diplotropis purpurea (sucupira), Guihourriu chodatiuna (sirari), Phyllostylon rhamnoides (cuta), Schinopsis cf. quebracho-colorudo (soto), and Tabeb~liuspp. (lapacho group) (tajibo or ipe). Eucalyptus marginatu Cjarrah) from Australia and Tectonu grandis (teak), both naturally grown from Burma and plantation-grown from Central America, were included in the study for comparison. The dimensional change for the species from Bolivia, commensurate with a change in relative humidity (RH) from 30% to 90%, varied from about 1.6% and 2.0% (radial and tangential directions) for Arnburunu cer~ren.risto 2.2% and 4.1% (radial and tangential) for Anadenanthera macrocarpu. The dimensional change for teak was 1.3% and 2.5% (radial and tangential) for the same change in relative humidity. None of the Bolivian species was completely free of warp or surface checks; however, Anadenanthera macrocarpu, Aspidosperma cy- lindrocurpon, and Schinopsis cf. quebracho-colorado performed almost as well as teak. The erosion rate of several of the wood species was considerably slower than that of teak, and there was little correlation between wood density and erosion rate. Part 2 of this report will include information on the decay resistance (natural durability) of these species. -

McMILLEN, Technologist Forest Products Laboratory, Forest Service U.S. Department of Agriculture Abstract One of the imported woods that is finding increasing use for specific purposes is ramin (Gonystylus spp.). It originates in the Southwest Pacific and has seasoning properties somewhat like oak. Many importers, custom dryers, and users are not aware of the special seasoning and handling requirements of this wood. As a result, some firms have experienced heavy losses. This note brings together suggestions that should greatly reduce or eliminate these losses. Ramin--Production and Properties Ramin (pronounced ray-min) is the common name used in the United States for wood from Gonystylus spp., principally G. bancanus growing in Sarawak, Malaysia. Another common name used in Malaya is melawis. The trees grow 1 Partly based on information from experienced importers, custom dryers, and users of ramin. in fresh water swamp forests and have straight, clean boles averaging 60 feet long and 2 feet in diameter near the base. Principal sources are the river valleys of Sarawak and the west coast of Malaya. In the Philippines, G. macrophyllus is common in the primary forests. An undetermined species is fairly comon in the Solomon Islands, Ramin is an attractive, high-class utility hardwood having about the same weight as sycamore or paper birch. Both the sapwood and the heartwood are white to pale straw in color. -

Analysis on Trade Trend of CITES Regualted Tree Species and its Impact on Chinese SMEs 2017.6 1 2 Preface The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (hereinafter referred to as CITES) is signed in Washington D.C. on 3 March 1973, also known as the Washington Convention. It entered into force on 1 July 1975. As an international convention on the control of international trade and the protection of wild flora and fauna, it aims to fully control the import and export of wild animals and plants as well as products thereof and manufactured goods through the regulation system, to promote protection and rational utilization of wild animals and plants resources to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. As of December 2016, CITES has 183 member countries where CITES legal framework and trade procedures are applied to regulate and monitor the international trade of species listed in CITES appendices. CITES has been in force for more than 40 years. It has been attracting more and more countries to jointly protect endangered wild animals and plants. At the same time, more and more fauna and flora species have been included in CITES appendices. Up to now, about 5,600 species of animals and 30,000 species of plants are protected by CITES against over-exploitation through international trade. In recent years, the sharp decline of endangered tree species has aroused widespread concern around the world, and over-exploitation is one of the main factors leading to this situation. -

Ring characteristics of mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla K.) plantation trees grown in Taiwan were explored. Significant differences in average ring width (RW) and ring density (RD) occurred among three tree-diameter classes and three radial stages of ring numbers. RW in the radial direction decreased from the pith outward to the bark and followed a distinctive three-stage variation pattern (juvenile, transition, and mature zones). RD in the radial direction increased slowly from the pith outward to the bark. Wider tree rings and lower density are associated with juvenile wood close to the pith, whereas narrower tree rings and higher density are typical for mature wood outward toward the bark. RD in overtopped trees was higher than that in dominant trees. However, RW in dominant trees was wider than that in intermediate and overtopped trees. Earlywood density, latewood density, maximum density, and minimum density were the most important factors determining overall RD. There was a weak relationship between RW and RD, indicating that it is unlikely for growth rates of mahogany plantation trees to have a significant impact on wood density. -

Wood from Planted and Natural Stands Kamile TIRAK HIZAL1*6, Nurgün ERDİN2 Abstract Sustainability of natural forests is under pressure due to some social and economic problems existing in developing countries. In such countries, creation of new resources for wood production by plantation establishment is necessary in order to protect forest eco-system and to meet the demand for wood. Fast-growing plantations will be relied upon as a key element in meeting future demand for wood. Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl. (Narrow leaved ash-NLA) tree is the most important species for Turkey because of its fast growing ability and valuable wood. It is also used in parquet, sports tools, mine poles, and caique building. The exceptional property of ash is its bending ability and flexibility. NLA wood is known as non-resistant to fungi but there is no information about planted ash wood. For this reason, possible durability differences between planted and natural grown NLA wood was studied in this study. Natural durability of fast growing NLA species, grown in plantation and natural stands was evaluated by soil-block decay test method according to ASTM D- 2017 -05. The ash trees were felled down from Adapazarı and Sinop regions and then test specimens were exposed to a brown rot fungus Gloeophyllum trabeum, two white rot fungi Pleurotus ostreatus and Coriolus versicolor for 12 weeks. The natural durability was determined by the weight loss percentage of the test blocks. As a result, there is no significant different between plantation and natural grown NLA wood durability against brown and white rot fungi. -
