Vanaf 2004 doet de Ne- derlandse Voedsel en Warenautoriteit (NVWA) jaarlijks verslag van de Staat van de Plantgezondheid in Nederland. De rapportage geeft een overzicht van in- en uitgaande notificaties, uitgevoerde inspecties op en bestrijdingsacties tegen qua- rantaineorganismen en andere schadelijke organismen. De eerstgenoemde orga- nismen zijn gereguleerd op grond van EU-richtlijn 2000/29/EG of zijn door de NVWA aangewezen als quarantainewaardig. In dit rapport wordt ook aandacht besteed aan organismen die niet zijn gereguleerd, nog niet of beperkt in Neder- land voorkomen, maar in de toekomst mogelijk een probleem kunnen vormen. Pagina 8 van 155 FYTOSIGNALERING 2013 SAMENVATTING Samenvatting Notificaties − Het aantal notificaties door Nederland van Q-organismen in importzendingen afkomstig uit derde landen is in 2014 afgenomen ten opzichte van 2013, van 438 naar 370. − In de gehele EU was sprake van een toename van deze notificaties van 2.333 in 2013 naar 2.463 in 2014. − Het aantal notificaties door Nederland wegens documentfouten is in 2014 ver- der gedaald tot nagenoeg de helft van dat in 2011. Het effect van de intensi- vering van de documentcontrole naar aanleiding van een aanbeveling van de Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) heeft zich ook in 2014 doorgezet. − Het aantal notificaties, dat Nederland heeft ontvangen uit derde landen, is in 2014 vergelijkbaar met eerdere jaren met een opvallend aantal van 21 notifi- caties voor pootgoed en minder notificaties voor bloembollen. − Het aantal notificaties, dat Nederland heeft ontvangen van EU-lidstaten over zendingen in het interne EU-verkeer betrof 74 in 2014. Daarvan hadden 64 betrekking op de vondst van een EU-quarantaineorganisme, de overige had- den betrekking op het ontbreken of incompleet zijn van het plantenpaspoort. Bloemisterij De sector bloemisterij omvat het brede scala van producten voor sierteelt, waarbij zowel voortkwekingsmateriaal als eindproduct wordt geproduceerd. In de sterk internationaal georganiseerde productieketens is een nauwe verbinding tussen de ketenschakels. Belangrijkste bevindingen uit 2014 zijn: − In 2014 is het aantal onderscheppingen van een schadelijk organisme bij im- port met 154 beduidend lager dan in voorgaande jaren, met name dankzij een halvering van het aantal Spodoptera littoralis vondsten. − Opmerkelijk in 2014 was de vondst van de Japanse trips Thrips setosus bij een teler van Hydrangea. Dit is de eerste vondst van dit organisme in de EU. Ook opmerkelijk is de sterke afname van het aantal vondsten van Opogona sacchari , acht in 2014 ten opzichte van ruim dertig een jaar eerder . − In het kader van de fytobewaking zijn 413 waarnemingen uitgevoerd op sier- teeltbedrijven. In 78 gevallen is een organisme gevonden dat is ingezonden voor diagnose. − In 2014 zijn relatief veel monsters genomen in Brugmansia en Solanum jas- minoides vanwege eerdere vondsten van Tomato apical stunt viroid in deze gewassen. Hieruit blijkt dat beide gewassen nog steeds in belangrijke mate zijn geïnfecteerd. − Bij export is, in tegenstelling tot in voorgaande jaren, het aantal afkeuringen wegens schadelijke organismen sterk gedaald, evenals het aantal afkeuringen om administratieve redenen. Strengere controles lijken hier hun vruchten af te werpen. Groenten en fruit De sector groenten en fruit betreft productie in volle grond en in kassen, met pro- ductieketens van zaadproductie tot teelt van eindproducten, waarbij in elke keten- schakel import, handel en export plaatsvindt. Belangrijkste bevindingen uit 2014 zijn: − In 2014 is het aantal intercepties van quarantaineorganismen bij importin- spectie afgenomen ten opzichte van 2013, van 191 naar 145. Deze afname Pagina 9 van 155 FYTOSIGNALERING 2013 SAMENVATTING wordt veroorzaakt door een sterke afname van onderscheppingen Phyllosticta citricarpa (Citrus Black Spot). − Vanaf 1 oktober 2014 is de paprikasnuitkever ( Anthonomus eugenii ) voor de gehele EU gereguleerd voor alle gewassen en is uitroeiing verplicht. Vooruitlo- pend daarop is een survey uitgevoerd waarin 169 insecten zijn gevonden. − Het aantal vondsten van Xanthomonas fragariae in uitgangsmateriaal van aardbei is verder teruggelopen tot dertien in 2014.

    A SURVEY OF THE MOTHS, BUTTERFLIES, AND GRASSHOPPERS OF FOUR NATURE CONSERVANCY PRESERVES IN SOUTHEASTERN NORTH CAROLINA Stephen P. Hall and Dale F. Schweitzer November 15, 1993 ABSTRACT Moths, butterflies, and grasshoppers were surveyed within four longleaf pine preserves owned by the North Carolina Nature Conservancy during the growing season of 1991 and 1992. Over 7,000 specimens (either collected or seen in the field) were identified, representing 512 different species and 28 families. Forty-one of these we consider to be distinctive of the two fire- maintained communities principally under investigation, the longleaf pine savannas and flatwoods. An additional 14 species we consider distinctive of the pocosins that occur in close association with the savannas and flatwoods. Twenty nine species appear to be rare enough to be included on the list of elements monitored by the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program (eight others in this category have been reported from one of these sites, the Green Swamp, but were not observed in this study). Two of the moths collected, Spartiniphaga carterae and Agrotis buchholzi, are currently candidates for federal listing as Threatened or Endangered species. Another species, Hemipachnobia s. subporphyrea, appears to be endemic to North Carolina and should also be considered for federal candidate status. With few exceptions, even the species that seem to be most closely associated with savannas and flatwoods show few direct defenses against fire, the primary force responsible for maintaining these communities. Instead, the majority of these insects probably survive within this region due to their ability to rapidly re-colonize recently burned areas from small, well-dispersed refugia.

Kons Jr. Last Update: June 2001 Abstract A systematic check list of 489 species of Lepidoptera collected in the University of Florida Natural Area Teaching Lab is presented, including 464 species in the superfamilies Drepanoidea, Geometroidea, Mimalonoidea, Bombycoidea, Sphingoidea, and Noctuoidea. Taxa recorded in Psychidae, Yponomeutidae, Sesiidae, Cossidae, Zygaenoidea, and Thyrididae are also included. Moth taxa were collected at ultraviolet lights, bait, introduced Bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum), and by netting specimens. A list of taxa recorded feeding on P. notatum is presented. Introduction The University of Florida Natural Area Teaching Laboratory (NATL) contains 40 acres of natural habitats maintained for scientific research, conservation, and teaching purposes. Habitat types present include hammock, upland pine, disturbed open field, cat tail marsh, and shallow pond. An active management plan has been developed for this area, including prescribed burning to restore the upland pine community and establishment of plots to study succession (http://csssrvr.entnem.ufl.edu/~walker/natl.htm). The site is a popular collecting locality for student and scientific collections. The author has done extensive collecting and field work at NATL, and two previous reports have resulted from this work, including: a biodiversity inventory of the butterflies (Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea & Papilionoidea) of NATL (Kons 1999), and an ecological study of Hermeuptychia hermes (F.) and Megisto cymela (Cram.) in NATL habitats (Kons 1998). Other workers have posted NATL check lists for Ichneumonidae, Sphecidae, Tettigoniidae, and Gryllidae (http://csssrvr.entnem.ufl.edu/~walker/insect.htm).

    KEY TO FREQUENTLY NAMED LEPIDOPTERAN LARVAE INTERCEPTED, OR POTENTIALLY ENCOUNTERED, AT US PORTS S. C. Passoa, 2014 This key is designed to identify the most frequently named Lepidoptera at United States ports of entry as of 2013. Because many species cannot be named (early instars or poorly studied groups), it is not a given that this key has all the most frequently intercepted taxa. Some genera may regularly intercepted but unrecognized. The huge variety of early instar Noctuidae/Erebidae is a good example of this problem. There are many other taxa in this category. Trade patterns are constantly changing over time, users should expect a need to delete or add species to this key in the future. Good comprehensive larval keys exist (Carter and Kristensen 1998, Stehr 1987) but as a rule they are too long and complicated for the volume of material we get in APHIS. Also, they rarely go past family. This key is a compromise between the need to for precision and speed. Thus, a good collection and detailed understanding of larval morphology is assumed and required. All of the references cited in the LepIntercept fact sheets need to be part of any port library. This document serves as a blanket recommendation for their purchase or copying costs from the APHIS Lepidoptera specialist to any port needing a justification. This key assumes eventual full access to the appropriate literature. Getting this information needs to be a priority for ports frequently intercepting larval Lepidoptera. Many of the copyrighted books are never going to be "on-line" and go out of print relatively fast.

NOTES AND EXHIBITIONS Protaetia fusca (Herbst) —Mr. Peterson reported observations which indicate that this cetoniine beetle feeds both by day and by night. On mango blossoms, attention seems first to be directed to stamens and pistils; the individual flowers are sheared off at the juncture of calyx and pedun cle. Considerable damage is done to blossoms of candle bush (Cassia alata), the individual flowers being sheared from the bloom spike and the petals eaten. Control of earthworms—Mr. Keck reported success in killing earth worms in lawns with applications of one-fourth of 1 per cent chlordane. Limax maximus l.—Mr. Pemberton exhibited a specimen of this slug, new to the Territory, collected December 20, 1949, by H. W. Brodie at the H.S.P.A. substation in upper Manoa Valley. It is a European species which is established in the eastern United States and on the Pacific Coast.

In a continuing effort to assess biodiversity and promote sustainable practices on the GSU (Statesboro) campus, this project aimed to add arthropods, perhaps the most biodiverse group of animals on the planet, to the vertebrate biodiversity database created in 2015. We exposed faculty, staff, students and the general public to the benefits of arthropod diversity through field activities on campus and exhibitions by focusing on charismatic insect groups and their environmental importance. Additionally, the project took advantage of the already established “iNaturalist” smartphone application to promote citizen science. We concentrated our efforts on two groups of beneficial insects in an effort to educate people of their importance, to reduce pesticide and herbicide use on campus and elsewhere, and to protect these organisms. We promoted Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) as important pollinators of flowering plants and Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) as important predators of biting insects such as mosquitoes and biting midges.
