  • President's Message
Published by the Golden Gate Lotus Club www.gglotus.org June 2003 President’s Message by Peter Richen Noni & I went to the Wine Country Classic the other day. Dave and Penny Elsebusch, who race a Lotus 7A (Dave drives, Penny is the mechanic), kindly provided me with a participant’s pass. It was a beautiful day. The Lotus marque was well represented with two 7A’s in the ’55 to ’62 GT & Production Car class; seven 23’s in the ’61 to ’65 Sport Racing Class; a super 7, and an Elan 26R in ’63 to ’66 GT and Produc- tion Cars; twelve 18’s, 20’s, 22’s and 27’s in the ’57 to ’63 Formula Car Class; and nine 11’s and one 15 in the ’55 to ’60 Sport Racing Class. In addition to the racing, there was a large tent devoted to wine tasting and other gourmet items from the Napa and Sonoma area. It cost an extra $15 each to get into the tent, but it went to Rich Kamp and a new Caterham 7, in his new shop charity, and it was worth it to be able to taste and nibble from a scenic area overlooking the course. We also took the opportunity to visit with Rich Kamp at his new shop, June Meeting which is right behind turn 10 (opposite the main grandstand). For those of you Friday, June 20th, 7:30 pm who remember his shop in South City, this new shop in huge in comparison Host: John Zender, aka Fusion Technology (~3000 SF).

  • Formula 1 Race Car Performance Improvement by Optimization of the Aerodynamic Relationship Between the Front and Rear Wings
The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School College of Engineering FORMULA 1 RACE CAR PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT BY OPTIMIZATION OF THE AERODYNAMIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE FRONT AND REAR WINGS A Thesis in Aerospace Engineering by Unmukt Rajeev Bhatnagar © 2014 Unmukt Rajeev Bhatnagar Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science December 2014 The thesis of Unmukt R. Bhatnagar was reviewed and approved* by the following: Mark D. Maughmer Professor of Aerospace Engineering Thesis Adviser Sven Schmitz Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering George A. Lesieutre Professor of Aerospace Engineering Head of the Department of Aerospace Engineering *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School ii Abstract The sport of Formula 1 (F1) has been a proving ground for race fanatics and engineers for more than half a century. With every driver wanting to go faster and beat the previous best time, research and innovation in engineering of the car is really essential. Although higher speeds are the main criterion for determining the Formula 1 car’s aerodynamic setup, post the San Marino Grand Prix of 1994, the engineering research and development has also targeted for driver’s safety. The governing body of Formula 1, i.e. Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) has made significant rule changes since this time, primarily targeting car safety and speed. Aerodynamic performance of a F1 car is currently one of the vital aspects of performance gain, as marginal gains are obtained due to engine and mechanical changes to the car. Thus, it has become the key to success in this sport, resulting in teams spending millions of dollars on research and development in this sector each year.

  • Chapman Report
The Chapman Report Published by the Golden Gate Lotus Club www.gglotus.org September 2006 Monterey And Pebble editor August is the Big month for classic car afficianados. I got to a few of the events, Monterey Historics on Satur- day, and the Pebble Beach Concours on Sunday. I missed the Concorso Italiano, the auctions and the rest. I should have ‘put the arm’ on members that attended other events to get their photos and stories. I could have gone to the auctions, but my wife and daughter ganged-up on me; ‘no more cars’. I tried to explain to my wife that she should look at the Jaguar XK140 drophead as an IRA, that will improve in value. Didn’t work. The All British Car Meet is upon us and I will miss that too; delivering daughter’s houshold stuff to Eugene (U of Oregon fall quarter). So I’m hoping that someone will take photos and write The People’s Choice Award was presented to this 1936 Delahaye 135 Figoni & Falaschi a short story for this newsletter, Please. Coupé If you will notice, all of the articles say ‘editor’, and that’s not the way it’s this opportunity to see some classics in Madness event, including Harvey supposed to work. I do need volun- motion. Laskey and his 1985 Lotus Turbo teers to send stories on these events. I Also, a nice article in the August Esprit. Buy it, or may be online. won’t make the upcoming track days or Road and Track on the Marque autocrosses, so any news on these has to come from the members.

  • Chapman Report
The Chapman Report Published by the Golden Gate Lotus Club www.gglotus.org April 2006 Major Breakthrough In Racing Portapoddies editor Finally, while sitting on the portapoddy and listening to the cars on the track going through the gears, you can shift along with them until you’re able to return to trackside. Yes, this was found and photographed at the Goodwood Revival races, but we can only hope that this design will be seen at our local tracks in the future. I, myself, was able to shift all the way up to fourth......doesn’t appear to have a 5th or 6th gear.....maybe in the next rev. Traction control whould be added too, I believe, knowing the potential for slippery floor conditions in these units. Anyway, this does symbolize a technological break- through that can only hint at the possibilities that we may see in the future. As Nissan says: “SHIFT”. “Europa”, A Fake In Lotus History Most of us just take for granted that the Europa is a true Lotus car. Well, we’ve been dupped for all of these years by an unscruptulous band of con artists that are trying to raise the value of this simple kit car created and made at the University of Northern South Dakota. Do you really believe that the car below, at’stated’ concourse level, is a true Lotus. April Meeting Friday, April 21st, 7:30 PM Host: Carol & Scott Whitman’s I began to research this after seeing GGLC events where no ‘Europas’ would show up, even though they were listed as the most owned model of the Lotus cars next page page 2 Europa Fakes continued Calendar What I found was that all of the April 21 GGLC Meeting See Page 1 Europas I could find looked more like old kit cars, half finished, than a high April 22 Autocross Marina Airport quality manufactured Lotus car.
