This monograph totally neglects the archaeological and architectural aspects of the castle of Sailhant, and provides no real description or dates. Alfred Douet concentrates mainly on the genealogy of the Lords of Sailhant: he uses and completes data taken from the ancient book of Baluze (among others) about the Lords of Auvergne. He also focuses on the purpose of the castle during the Hundred Years’ war, and uses works published before his book and written by another local historian specialized in texts, Marcelin Boudet, famous for his archival work and his scientific method. The goal here is not to simply paraphrase or summarize Alfred Douet’s complex work but to retain the essential contextual information which will allow us to refine the hypothesis relative to the nature and dates of the successive campaigns of construction which are still imprinted in the fabric of the existing castle.

    FORT 2016 cover - v.1:Fort 2005 - cover 10/09/2016 18:21 Page 1 Fortress Study Group 44 Fort The Fortress Study Group is an international group which aims to advance the education of the public in all aspects of fortifications and their armaments, especially works constructed to mount and resist artillery. It was founded in June 1975 at Pembroke College Oxford, to provide an opportunity for those interested in fortifications to get to know one another, and to publish their research. Membership now stands at over 600, and includes professional architects and historians, retired or serving members of the armed forces, and amateur enthusiasts. Interests range from the earliest provisions for artillery, through 16th century Italian fortifications to Second World War pillboxes and Cold War concrete. Members have been involved in restoration schemes such as Fort Amherst, Harwich Redoubt, Needles Battery, Newhaven Fort and many others in the United Kingdom and around the world. The group produces two publications: FORT, the refereed journal, and Casemate, a magazine which appears three times a year. Each year a Conference is held at a different location in the United Kingdom, with a programme of lectures and visits to local fortifications. Conferences have been held at such locations as Dover, Plymouth, Hull, Portland, Edinburgh, the Isle of Wight, Pembroke, London and Harwich. There is also an annual International Study Tour and the group has in the past visited Gibraltar, the Maginot Line, Malta, The Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, USA, France, Denmark, Poland, Rhodes, Bermuda, Germany, Crete, Slovenia and many other places.     THE IMPACT OF CRUSADER CASTLES UPON EUROPEAN WESTERN CASTLES IN THE MIDDLE AGES JORDAN HAMPE MAY 2009 A SENIOR PROJECT SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENT FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF ARTS IN ARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDIES UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN- LA CROSSE Abstract: During the Middle Ages, the period from roughly AD 1000-1450, the structure of castles changed greatly from wooden motte and bailey to stone keeps and defenses within stone city walls. The reason for the change was largely influenced by the crusades as Europeans went to the Holy Lands to conquer. In addition to conquering, these kings brought back a new way of designing and fortifying their castles in England, Wales and France. Without the influence of the crusades, what we think of as true middle age castles would not exist. For my paper I will analyze the impact the crusades had on forming the middle age castles by evidence surviving in the archaeological record from before and after the crusades as well as modifications done on castles to accommodate crusader changes to show the drastic influence of crusader castle fortifications upon English, Welsh and French castles. 1 Introduction Construction of what is believed to be true middle age castles from A.D. 1000 to 1450 began as kings arrived back from the crusades to the Holy Lands, bringing with them ideas of how to make their castles grander and more easily defensible. Before the crusades William I of England was beginning to develop a new concentric style of castle beginning with the Tower of London. After the crusades many English, Welsh and French kings took the concentric concept and combined it with what they saw on the crusades and developed it to become majestic castles and fortresses like Chateau Gaillard in France, Dover Castle in England, and Caernarvon Castle in Wales.
