David Godfrey: Dr. Carr and this organization thought that one of the ways that we could reestablish sea turtles on places where they used to nest but don’t currently nest because we’ve eaten glassthem all or harvested blowing them all for different reasons was to take turtles from one population and move them to another beach, let the eggs incubate on a different beach, and then when those turtles grew up and wanted to come back and nest, they would nest at that new beach. We actually had a program called Operation Green Turtle which was going on in the late 50s and early 60s. It was in partnership with the Navy, the US Navy. They would fly this old Grumman water plane down and land it in Tortuguero River in front of our station. They’d fill it up with this buckets of some eggs and some hatchlings and they would fly them and attempt to reseed turtle colonies all over the Caribbean and Atlantic. It was ultimately not a successful was to go about it, but a great deal was learned about sea turtles during this and maybe most importantly, and this is something that Dr. Carr wrote about in some of his books, it was the first sort of public relations initiative that raised awareness in all of those islands where they went about the fact that sea turtles were in trouble, and that there were people that cared.

BOUCHARD AND KAREN A. BJORNDAL Department of Zoology, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida 32611, USA ABSTRACT.—Herbivorous reptiles use microbial gut symbionts to digest plant material. These symbionts ferment cell wall components, producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), which the host uses as an energy source. In reptiles, fermentation usually occurs in the large intestine; however, the freshwater Florida Red- Bellied Cooter, Pseudemys nelsoni, has both small and large intestine fermentation. Although small intestine fermentation has not been found in other chelonians, no other freshwater turtles have been examined. We measured SCFA concentrations in the digestive tracts of juvenile and adult Pond Sliders, Trachemys scripta. Like many other turtles, T. scripta experiences an ontogenetic diet shift from carnivory to herbivory, and it is unknown whether juveniles can digest plant material. We determined whether (1) this species harbors small intestine fermentation, (2) juveniles possess SCFA concentrations comparable to other herbivorous reptiles, and (3) a change in relative fermentation chamber capacity accompanies the diet shift. We fed turtles a plant diet for five weeks and then measured SCFA concentrations in their gastrointestinal tracts and the mass of gastrointestinal tract contents. Both juveniles and adults had SCFA concentrations comparable to other herbivorous reptiles; however, they did not have significant small intestine fermentation. Additionally, there was no difference between the relative masses of juvenile and adult fermentation chamber contents.

Based on aerial surveys taken between 1964 and 1992, we know that over 350 acres of seagrasses have been 1 lost in West Bay alone. Furthermore, seagrasses are damaged by boat propellers; it is estimated that more than 50% of the seagrass beds in the bay show signs of scarring.
