  • Erdington Abbey 1850-1876-2001
Erdington Abbey 1850-1876-2001 Michael Hodgetts Benedictine History Symposium 2001 ERDINGTON ABBEY, 1850-1876-2001 Michael Hodgetts From 1876 until 1922, the arch-abbey of Beuron in Württemberg had a daughter-house in England at Erdington, four and a half miles north-east of Birmingham. The parish is still universally known as ‘the Abbey’, although it has been served by Redemptorists since 1922 and the claustral buildings were sold to a local school in 1994. The church itself celebrated its one hundred and fiftieth anniversary on 11 June last year: it was built by a wealthy Tractarian convert, Daniel Henry Haigh, on whose retirement in 1876 it was taken over by the Benedictines from Beuron. My parents were married there in 1934, and I have known it since 1942. So I was delighted when Abbot Scott asked me to mark the anniversary by a contribution to this Symposium. Until the 19th century, Erdington was merely a hamlet in the huge medieval parish of Aston, which included all the countryside between Birmingham and Sutton Coldfield, seven miles to the north-east and for several miles to the east as well. There had been recusant gentry within three or four miles, but not in Erdington itself. About 1690 Andrew Bromwich established a Masshouse at (Old) Oscott, now known as Maryvale, three miles north-west, in Handsworth parish, which, like Erdington, is now a suburb of Birmingham. Even in 1767, however, only two Papists were reported in the whole of Aston parish, though in Sutton Coldfield there were thirty, and in Birmingham and Edg-baston, on the far side of it, there were well over three hundred.

Contact: Planning Strategy PO Box 14439 1 Lancaster Circus Birmingham B2 2JE E-mail: [email protected] Telephone: (0121) 303 3734 Mark Barrow Strategic Director of Development theBirminghamplan birmingham’s local development framework Foreword I am very pleased to be endorsing this emerging Core Strategy. It will play a key role in helping to shape the future direction of this great city. Birmingham is a diverse, dynamic and forward thinking city of over a million people. It is the regional capital of the Midlands and is strategically located at the heart of the United Kingdom. The city has seen constant and progressive change throughout its history, embracing new cultures and the challenges of shifting global economies and more recently climate change. Over recent years there has been a transformation of the city centre, including the rebuilding of the Bullring, development of concert/ conferencing and sporting facilities and the creation of attractive public squares and spaces all to the highest international standards. The city will continue to adapt to and embrace change, in order to enhance its position as a key economic and cultural centre regionally, nationally and internationally. Further expansion will see development of a state of the art ‘Library for Birmingham’ the new central library, the redevelopment of New Street railway station and expansion of Birmingham International Airport.

  • Racecourses in Sutton Park
RACECOURSES IN SUTTON PARK Mike Hinson Horse—racing in the Birmingham area is most often associated with the racecourse at Bromford Bridge, where a final meeting was held on Monday 21st June 1965. It may surprise you to learn that, almost two hundred years ago, the ' sport of kings ' was popular in Sutton and local race meetings were organised on a regular basis. Sutton Park's First Racecourse(s) The Observer for 20th November 1843 reported that public races had been held in the Park from the 1830s. They 'dragged on a miserable existence' due to the restrictions under which such amusements had been placed by the Sutton Coldfield Corporation. In the 1840s, 'a more liberal spirit' was shown towards racing in general throughout the neighbourhood (1). Newspaper reports describe a two—day flat fixture which was staged on 19th and 20th June 1844 at a course situated near Wyndley Pool. The leading light in this enterprise was Mr John Wiggan, a retired gunmaker who lived near the Park. The main event was the 'Windley' Pool Handicap with £50 prize money. A further one-day meeting was held on 22nd October of that year. Most often regarded as Sutton's first, was the racecourse constructed on land lying between Holly Knoll and Blackroot quarry. The course was 1764 yards long and oval in shape, the first half mile being flat, followed by an awkward descent, then a gentle rise leading to a level finish. Remains can still be found at a point where it curves through a cutting in the north part of Holly Knoll, and by the motor road in the direction of the railway bridge (2).

  • Sutton Coldfield Town Centre and Retail Market Assessment
SUTTON COLDFIELD TOWN CENTRE AND RETAIL MARKET ASSESSMENT Report prepared for and on behalf of Sutton Coldfield Town Council Peter Shearman Associates 01732 465 100 07768 994 087 [email protected] April 2018 1 CONTENTS Context and Objectives Summary Conclusions – 12 key points 1. Retail Market Trends – the national picture 2. Sutton Town Centre – the fundamentals : - layout and structure - environmental quality - accessibility 3. Sutton Town Centre – non-retail uses 4. Sutton Town Centre – trends in retail representation : 5. Sutton Town Centre – expanding the retail offer 6. Development Potential : specific sites 7. Suggested physical and promotional measures Appendices 1. How the town centre divides up (plan) 2. Main components of the shopping core (aerial photograph) 3. Retail composition (Goad Plan extract) 4. The Solihull factor 5. The Fort Retail Park – retail mix 6. Ventura Retail Park – retail mix 7. House of Fraser – Sutton Coldfield relaunch 2 CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVES In 2016 the Sutton Coldfield electorate voted in favour of establishing a town council to represent the interests of the town in a more focused way than is realistically possible for Birmingham City Council. Sutton’s population of some 95,000 covers a wide area that extends from the Staffordshire border to Wylde Green, and from the west side of Sutton Park across to Walmley. Despite the size of this area and its substantial population, it is dwarfed by the sheer scale of Birmingham City which has a total population of 1.2 million; to the south-west the continuous built-up area reaches as far as Rubery (15 miles from the centre of Sutton).
