Die gebakte kleidak is nou net so stewig soos ‘n baksteenmuur.

These buildings are an important indication of our level of civilisation and a convincing proof for a judgmental critical world - that for more than 300 years a structured and proper Western civilisation has flourished and exist here at the southern point of Africa. The visible tracks of our cultural heritage are our historic buildings…they are undoubtedly the deeds to the land we love and which God in his mercy gave to us. 1 2 Fig.1. • Aesthetic-Theological Perspectives on the Monumentalisation of Religion1
Scriptura 114 (2015:1), pp. 1-13 http://scriptura.journals.ac.za GOD IN GRANITE? AESTHETIC-THEOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES ON THE MONUMENTALISATION OF RELIGION1 Johan Cilliers Practical Theology and Missiology Stellenbosch University Abstract In this article an introductory look is taken at the phenomenon of the monumentalisation of religion, particularly in view of its imperial expressions. The history and religious meaning of the Voortrekker Monument, situated outside Pretoria in South Africa, is outlined briefly as a case in point, followed by a number of aesthetic-theological perspectives on the notion of the monumentalisation of religion, using the keywords as lenses. The article concludes with a reflection on an art work by Argentinian born artist/architect Tomás Saraceno, entitled: ‘On Space Time Foam’. Key Words: Remembrance; Time; Space; Movement The Monumentalisation of Religion The erecting of sites of remembrance and/or spaces for ritual and religious reflection has been part and parcel of humanity since the dawn of time. Phenomena such as for example the rock paintings of dancing Khoi-San in Southern Africa, or the depiction of people, animals and symbols in the caves at Lascaux, France, clearly indicate that people felt the need to express their religious experiences concretely, and also to leave traces of these experiences for generations to come. The arrangement of the hundreds of portrayals at Lascaux in the unmistakable form of a place of worship at the very least indicates that religion and aesthetic expressions thereof initially

  • 'Bitter Hedge': Narrative, Nationalism, and the Construction of Afrikaner Identity In
SPECIAL ISSUE ––– 2011 PERSPECTIVES ON POWER CONFERENCE VOLUME VI ISSUE 11 2013 ISSN: 1833-878X Pages 29-38 Sheilagh Ilona O’Brien The Construction of a ‘Bitter Hedge’: Narrative, Nationalism, and the Construction of Afrikaner Identity in the Voortrekker Monument ABSTRACT During the early settlement of South Africa, the governor, Jan Van Riebeeck, grew a hedge of Bitter Almond to divide the fledgling colony from the local population. The journey of the Voortrekkers who escaped British rule into the interior would become an important focal point of Afrikaner nationalism, and the single most important event in Afrikaner history and mythology. The construction of the Voortrekker Monument, and the narrative it presents, are important for understanding how the Afrikaners constructed and used their past. Afrikaners clung to their imagined past in a present where everything seemed doubtful, and in so doing they attempted once again to cut themselves off from the world around them. Through Afrikaner nationalism Jan Van Riebeeck’s ‘Bitter Almond hedge’ returned to South Africa in the twentieth-century. BIOGRAPHY Sheilagh Ilona O’Brien has a Bachelor of Arts (Hons), with a double-major in History and First Class Honours, and a Masters of International Studies both from The University of Queensland. She is currently a PhD Candidate in the School of History, Philosophy, Religion and Classics at The University of Queensland. Her major fields of interest are oppression and its causes, genocide and communal violence, and history as myth: how we tell narratives about the past. 29 THE CONSTRUCTION OF A ‘B ITTER HEDGE ’: NARRATIVE , NATIONALISM , AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF AFRIKANER IDENTITY IN THE VOORTREKKER MONUMENT This In 1938, centennial celebrations took place upon the site of a nineteenth-century battle at Bloedrivier , in commemoration of the conflict between the Dutch Voortrekkers – who in 1838 were moving north to escape British rule – and the Zulu impis .

  • An Investigation Into the Interrogation of Afrikaner Culture and Identity in the Work of Selected Artists
AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE INTERROGATION OF AFRIKANER CULTURE AND IDENTITY IN THE WORK OF SELECTED ARTISTS NICOLÉ MAUREL DURBAN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY DURBAN SOUTH AFRICA MARCH 2015 AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE INTERROGATION OF AFRIKANER CULTURE AND IDENTITY IN THE WORK OF SELECTED ARTISTS Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Technology: Fine Art in the Faculty of Arts and Design at the Durban University of Technology DECLARATION I declare that this dissertation is my own work and has not been submitted previously for any degree or examination through any other institution. _______________________ Nicolé Maurel March 2015 APPROVED FOR FINAL SUBMISSION Supervisor: __________________ Date: ________________ A Starkey Co-supervisor: __________________ Date: ________________ Dr J Roome i ABSTRACT The purpose of this research was to investigate the interrogation of Afrikaner culture and identity in the work of Andries Botha (1952) and Marlene de Beer (1957) in the context of Afrikaner nationalism. Anthony Smith’s theory of ethno symbolism (2010) and writings on nationalism by Montserrat Gibernau (1996, 2004a, 2000b) are used as a theoretical framework for an analysis of Afrikaner culture and identity, in the form of Afrikaner nationalism. A qualitative research methodology was used, within an art historical, theoretical and practice led investigation into the interrogation of Afrikaner culture and identity. A reflective approach clarified and made meaningful concepts which relate to both my theoretical and practical work, which are interlinked. De Beer makes use of cultural symbols, in interrogating the position of the female in Afrikaner identity and culture, in the context of South African history.

  • Princeton/Stanford Working Papers in Classics
Princeton/Stanford Working Papers in Classics Mixed capital: classicism in unexpected places Version 1.1 February 2012 Grant Parker Stanford University Abstract: The reception of Greco-Roman antiquity in South Africa exhibits enormous variety. The current essay is an introduction to a proposed volume that explores as many aspects as possible. Several instances of South African classicism cluster around Cecil John Rhodes, but equally there is significant material involving people who have had little or no formal instruction in Latin or Greek. © Grant Parker [email protected] 1 Mixed capital: classicism in unexpected places On 12 February 1991 a meeting took place at Cape Town’s airport, then known as D. F. Malan Airport in memory of a previous prime minister, between leaders of the African National Congress and President F. W. de Klerk’s ruling National Party. One year earlier Nelson Mandela, the African National Congress (ANC) leader, had been released from lengthy imprisonment and the organisation itself unbanned. The purpose of the meeting was to clear the way for formal talks about the transition to democracy, talks which had at the time stalled as a result of violent exchanges involving both the black population and the security forces. The meeting ultimately produced the D. F. Malan Accord, an agreement on the terms of engagement that did much to make possible the first democratic election of April 1994. This was unchartered territory and the mood was tense. Skeptics on each side questioned the entire exercise of negotiating a democratic solution to the country’s political impasse, which had long since been marked by violence.

March 2017 Copyright © 2017 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Summary In this thesis I examine the phenomenon of Modernist Afrikaans Protestant church architecture in the South African built environment during the mid- to late 20th century. I trace the relation of the Afrikaner nation and the Church since the arrival of the first Dutch settlers to the consolidation of Afrikaner nationalist rule in the 20th century, as background to a discussion of the emergence and development of Modernist architecture in South Africa. This thesis investigates the Modernist Afrikaans churches which appeared in urban landscapes across the country, with specific focus on the work of two architects, A.P.S. Conradie and Pieter J. Pelser, both of whom have not been researched or written about in depth. As such, this study aims to contribute valuable knowledge and information to the field of South African architectural history.

  • The Women at Winburg's Voortrekker Monument
The Women at Winburg’s Voortrekker Monument Walter Peters Department of Architecture, University of the Free State, Bloemfontein E-mail: [email protected] The Voortrekker Monument at Winburg resulted from an open architectural competition held in 1964. This monument followed the national Voortrekker Monument depicting a shrine surrounded by a literal ox-wagon laager by Gerard Moerdijk at Pretoria, 1938-49, and its procurement, architecture and architect could hardly have been more different. Entries were to symbolize, the ordeliewende gemeenskap as well as die vrou in die Groot Trek, and, to everyone’s surprise the English-speaking, Durban-based, liberal, young modernist architect, Hans Hallen, won the competition from 36 entries. His was an abstract design that acknowledged each of the five leaders of the trek parties in an orderly assembly of towering, chamfered half-pipes of off-shutter reinforced concrete in a circular arrangement. These were turned to open outward while their backs symbolically defined a laager, and the submission proposed that a statue of a woman be the focus of the enclosed space for which one half-pipe was misaligned and the roof cut back that the figure would bask in natural daylight. But, the statue was never commissioned. This neglect left the monument itself - the body - to communicate the role of the women, the focus of this research. Key words: Hans Hallen, Voortrekkers, abstract monuments of commemoration.

Address for Correspondence: Room 2-18, Boukunde BuIldIng, UnIversIty of Pretona, Pretoria, 0002, South Africa Email: [email protected] In this article Moerdijk's early architectural career is paralleled with the chronological sequence of texts that express his concerns with developing an authentic South African styl:. In these we discover th?se significant aspects which are pragmatically functional - namely planmng arrangements, acoustIcs, economy and societal well-being, geographical - namely topography, climate, available labo~r ~nd materials; and cultural - namely historical events, cultural inheritance, a sense of self worth and dlgmty, all as reflected in the practice of religion and the conduct of civil society. His early career in their service until the end of 1909. • 17-14 Rault-Afrikanerflags
Proc. XVII International Congress of Vexillology Copyright ©1999, Southern African Vexillological Assn. Peter Martinez (ed.) Afrikaner political flags Philippe Louis Rault Dedicated to Mrs Betsie Verwoerd in memory of the late Rudolph Boshoff. ABSTRACT: The goal of this study is to review the flags of Afrikaner political parties and movements of the past as well as the present with special emphasis on those organisations which now con stitute the new Afrikaner separatist political movement. The new Afrikaner National Flag, intended to fly in future over the Republic of Afrikanerland, is presented. The illustrations for this paper appear on Plates 24-26. 1 Introduction It was the policy of all South African Prime Ministers, from Louis Botha to P.W. Botha, to strive for the establishment of one white South African nation, with two languages and two cultures. But this was never realized, mainly because the Afrikaner has always refused to relinquish his own identity and nationality. As Robert van Tonder wrote thirty years ago: “Also here an Afrikaner remains an Afrikaner and an Englishman an Englishman, and there is no reason to pretend that this will disappear by imposing on us the imprint ‘South African.’ .. .You do not get traditions out of the air.”^ In 1994 a chapter in the history of South Africa was closed. Afrikaners no longer govern this country and have become a non-independent people, like the Quebecois, the Basques, the Bretons, the Zulus and many, many others. 100 Philippe Rault Afrikaner political flags 101 It might be the choice of some Afrikaners to sacrifice their identity and This AB flag is not widely known.
