For years, Europe and the world have been witnessing a crime against humanity without opposing any resistance to it. In recent months, several studies have reported the use of Uyghur forced labour for the benefit of major European companies. Indeed, many Chinese factories, directly supplying EU brands exploit the Uyghurs and benefit from their forced labour. Facing this abjection, Europe must act to protect the lives and fundamental rights of Uyghurs. The EU should use its trade and market power to safeguards the founding principles enrichened in our Treaties and guiding our external policies. As the US did lately through an imports ban passed almost unanimously in the US House of Representatives, Europe urgently needs to establish a blacklist of Chinese companies implicated in Uyghur forced labour. In Romania, deforestation caused by illegal logging is continuing on an alarming scale. It threatens the last and irreplaceable primary forests in the EU, which are more crucial than ever in the fight against climate change and for the preservation of biodiversity. According to expert estimates, up to two thirds of the EU’s remaining primary forests are located in Romania. Largely untouched areas in the Romanian Carpathian Mountains and the Făgăraș Mountains have survived until today – a European if not global heritage of invaluable ecological value. Some of these forests are also included in the List of World Heritage Sites UNESCO.1 Now, ruthless greed and large-scale corruption are seriously endangering these European natural treasures and the time for protective measures is running out. If no immediate action is taken, the still existing forests will soon be lost forever. Since the launch of the European Commission’s infringement procedure against Romania on 12 February 2020 for failing to establish effective measures against illegal logging2, thousands more hectares were destroyed.

The committee raised concerns that across the EU, persons with disabilities still live in institutions rather than in their local communities, while one of the main purposes of the CRPD, envisaged in Articles 1 and 19, is to guarantee all persons with disabilities the right to live independently. The committee noted that the European Structural and Investment Funds continue to be used in Member States to maintain residential institutions or to invest in new residential settings that remain institutional in their way of functioning. The committee recommended that the EU stop allowing such investments to continue and instead invest ambitiously in the deinstitutionalisation process. In the light of the above: 1. First some history: Thomas Waitz, born in 1973 in Vienna as child of a rail worker and a farmers daughter, three children age 19 to 25, organic farmer since 1994, beekeeping and forestry as the main work fields, been with the Austrian Greens since 1999, I have served on all political levels, locally, in the region of Styria, as a farmers parliamentarian in the chamber of farmers, in regional and national boards, seven years as treasurer in a green foundation, as an Austrian EGP -delegate since the founding of the EGP in 2004 (with a break of approximately three years), since 2017 as committee member, end of 2017 to 2019 as a member of the European parliament. If Brexit happens, I will return to the EP as the 19th Austrian MEP. The last European elections showed that - if we do our job right - our voters potential rose towards 20%. This is true for the member states of the EU where the green parties have an established traditional basis, where we have been active and present in parliaments and sometimes in governments. Some may say, we have arrived at the center of the political spectrum.

In order to achieve a carbon-neutral European Union until 2050 with a clean, resource efficient and competitive economy, you are focusing on fair and inclusive transitions for everyone. One of the main European Treaties, the EURATOM-Treaty, diametrically opposes your efforts. On 25 March 1957, the treaty for establishing the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) was signed in Rome - at the same time as the treaty establishing the European Economic Community (EEC). The "Roman Treaties" are the foundation of today's European Union. While the EEC-Treaty has been reformed several times (EEC - EC - TFEU-Treaty), the EURATOM-Treaty has remained unchanged since 1957. Its main aim is the development of a powerful European nuclear industry. Nuclear energy "represents an essential resource for the development and invigoration of industry and will permit the advancement of the cause of peace" - up to this day. This also applies to 14 member states that have never operated nuclear power plants or that have decided to phase out nuclear energy as well as to those that reject the technology constitutionally.

    Brussels, 21 January 2020 Dear President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, Dear President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, On 26 May 2019, EU citizens elected their 751 representatives in the European Parliament. One of them was Oriol Junqueras, who was elected by over one million votes. Mr Junqueras was then and currently is imprisoned, deprived of his freedom for 810 days, for organising a referendum on self- determination. In the context of criminal proceedings arising from an affair of undeniably political nature, on 19 December 2019 the Court of Justice of the European Union clarified that the status of Mr Junqueras as a Member of the European Parliament arises solely from his election and was acquired by virtue of the official declaration of those results by the competent national authority, a circumstance that occurred on 13 June 2019. The Court also stressed that, once the electoral results are declared, all Members enjoy immunity as provided for under EU law. Despite this situation, the Spanish judicial authorities prevented Mr Junqueras from attending Parliament's inaugural session in Strasbourg on 2 July 2019 and insist in their position when they prevent him from attending January’s session. If his rights had been respected by the Spanish courts, Mr Junqueras should have been free since last June. Respect for the European institutions is what makes the European Union project strong. Thus, by preventing Mr Junqueras from performing his functions as a Member of the European Parliament in representation of his constituents, despite the ruling of the CJEU, the Spanish Supreme Court is attacking upon the fundamental values of the European project.

And for years, the international community has stood idly by. Great crimes need great silences. The time has come to break the deafening silence that surrounds the oppression of the Uyghur people. Systematic sterilizations, forced abortions, children separated from their parents, naysayers sentenced to death, women forced to (literally) share their bed with emissaries of the Chinese Communist Party, massive rapes: since the end of 2016, the "Xinjiang Autonomous Region" has become the other name for the negation of man's humanity. The reasons for the deportations reveal the nature of the repressive system put in place under the authority of President Xi Jinping, the man who urged his officials to show “absolutely no mercy” with the Uyghurs. You don’t drink alcohol? You get sent to camps. You send greetings for Eid? You get sent to camps. You read the Quran? You get sent to camps. You call your family abroad? You get sent to camps. And once in the camps, detainees must participate in a ceremony in which, each morning, they renounce their language, their culture, their religion - Islam. This self-abolition is the heart of the policy of "re-education" carried out by the Chinese government: abandon what you are as a people and maybe then will you survive as an individual. Uyghurs have fallen into a kind of universal black hole.
