MCA, Qantas and Tate Announce First Series of Australian Artwork Acquisitions
MCA, Qantas and Tate announce first series of Australian artwork acquisitions [Sydney, 13 May 2016] The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA), Qantas and Left: Vernon Ah Kee, Tate have today revealed the first five artworks in their International Joint Acquisition tall man 2010 four-channel video Program for contemporary Australian art. That same year Louise E Rorabacher wrote a book-length study - Marjorie Barnard and M Barnard Eldershaw, after agreeing not to write about Barnard's private life. This led to many studies of the pair's joint literary output and short biographical studies and much misinformation, from scholars beguiled into believing Barnard's stories which were often deliberately disseminated to protect the secrecy of the affair that dominated her life between 1934 and 1942. A re-examination of her life and work is now necessary because there have been huge misunderstandings about other aspects of Barnard's life, too. Her habit of telling imaginary stories denigrating her father, led to him being maligned by his daughter's interviewers. Marjorie's commonest accusation was of her father's meanness, starting with her student allowance, but if the changing value of money is taken into account, her allowance (for pocket money) was extremely generous compared to wages of the time. -
Almost Memories / Almost True Stories
Selected Prose of Dorothy Hewett edited and introduced by Fiona Morrison (University of Western Australia Press, 2011) Editor Fiona Morrison points to a certain tradition of collecting the prose of poets (4); this collection brings together the literary criticism, political essays and writing on theatre of Dorothy Hewett, never only a poet. While Hewett’s manifold achievements across diverse genres, especially poetry, have been well surveyed, her voice as a critic has remained historical, muffled by its scattered presence in small, even forgotten journals and magazines, and unavailable as a discrete body of work. Great affection remains for Hewett as a writer and figure, among her readers but also her witnesses, and this collection will find interest from many. Her trajectory, from young modernist to committed communist, to melodramatic apostate and then contrarian grande dame, can be traced in these pieces, and they are rich biographical resources for a commanding figure in Australian literature. But not only such – Hewett deserves to be read for her reach into Australian and international culture as a critic and commentator in her own right, and in her own changing times. Morrison has collected 32 pieces of Hewett’s non-fiction prose, of differing size, weight and amplitude, grouped into three nominated sections, organised chronologically. The first of these presents literary critical pieces, and begins with two from 1945, when Hewett’s poem ‘Testament’ had just won the ABC Poetry Competition and she was writing for Black Swan, the student magazine of the University of Western Australia. Two pieces of greater contrast are hard to find: one on the British modernist poet, eccentric and wit Edith Sitwell; the other on the recently published first volume of the goldfields trilogy completed by communist and West Australian Katharine Susannah Prichard. -

Daniel Boyd’s Untitled T13 (2015) is not an Aboriginal acrylic dot painting but dots of archival glue placed to match the pixel-like 3108 Indigenous Archives.indd 342 14/10/2016 3:38 PM Anachronic Archive form of a reproduction from a colonial photographic archive. Archival glue is a hard, wax-like material that forms into lumps – the artist compares them to lenses – rather than the smooth two- dimensional dot of acrylic paint. As material evidence of racist photography, Boyd’s paintings in glue at the 2015 Venice Biennale exhibition physicalised the leitmotiv of archives. In Boyd’s Untitled T13 the representation of the Marshall Islands’ navigational charts is an analogy to the visual wayfinding of archival photographs. While not associated with a concrete institution, Boyd’s fake anachronic archive refers to institutional- ised racism – thus fitting the Biennale curator Okwui Enwezor’s curatorial interest in archival and documentary photography, which he argues was invented in apartheid South Africa.1 In the exhibition he curated in 2008, Archive Fever: Uses of the Document in Contemporary Art, Enwezor diagnosed an ‘archival fever’ that had afflicted the art of modernity since the invention of photography. The invention, he believed, had precipitated a seismic shift in how art and temporality were conceived, and that we still live in its wake. -

CHAPTER 12 ‘Put on dark glasses and a blind man’s head’: Poetic defamation and the question of feminist privacy in 1970s Australia Nicole Moore The only successful defamation case ever run against poetry in Australia has at its centre a contest more precisely about changing definitions of privacy than of public reputation. Launched against Australian writer Dorothy Hewett by her former husband Lloyd Davies, the charge was not restricted to a single poem or piece of writing, nor to a single Australian jurisdiction, and in the first instance was scheduled to be heard by the High Court before being settled on legal advice. The multiplying offences and charges are best outlined in a narrative, clarifying the detailed roles of the various agents and actors in what became a high-profile cause célèbre in the late 1970s that ramified across Australia’s expanding culture industry. At stake was a highly gendered question about art’s access to the private sphere—its ability to represent intimate life acutely, even savagely—and then, more than this, about poetry’s ability to challenge legal measures of public truth. Stretching from 1969 into the early 1980s, notable dimensions of the case make it both exceptional and representative—a synecdoche for its times, in its conflicts and ambiguities, as well as a point of departure, in legal terms and in literary terms—in ways that illuminate transformative political and social change across the decade. 223 EVERYDAY REVOLUTIONS Second-wave feminist critiques of the legal concept of privacy can be seen to have arisen as part of attempts to break down gendered boundaries between the public and private spheres, which, in the long wake of first-wave feminism, targeted historical legal formations that subsumed women and children to a male political subject. -

Powell By now we might hope for some kind of consensus on the genesis of the Homeric poems, but the plot seems as muddled as ever. In the history of Homeric studies we find our truest exemplum of cultural myopia. We don’t know what to do with Homer because we think he is just like us. As we change, he changes too. Our present myopia is, in my experience, bound up with a set of terms that mean too many things, or contradictory things, to too many people, creating the illusion that we have grasped something when we haven’t. From a longer list of similar terms, I have selected six to discuss in this article: text, orality, literacy, tradition, dictation, and education. I do not hope to present a universal or historical description of how such terms have been used, but to show how they have come to be mixed up with each other in a perplexing chaos, presenting a distorted description of the nature and origin of early Greek literature. Text Let us begin by thinking about Homer, who, whatever else, is a text and always has been a text (Fig. 1). Homer is a physical object first, with look and texture and graphemes capable of interpretation. One sometimes hears phrases like “oral text” or similar metaphors, but these I reject out of hand. The Homeric Question is directed to the problem of how this physical object, this text, came into being. -
