Porsche at Le Mans Meet the Heroes of Le Mans • Porsche and the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1 Porsche and the 24 Hours of Le Mans Porsche in the starting line-up for 63 years The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the most famous endurance race in the world. The post-war story of the 24 Heures du Mans begins in the year 1949. And already in 1951 – the pro - duction of the first sports cars in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen commenced in March the previous year – a small delegation from Porsche KG tackles the high-speed circuit 200 kilometres west of Paris in the Sarthe department. Class victory right at the outset for the 356 SL Aluminium Coupé marks the beginning of one of the most illustrious legends in motor racing: Porsche and Le Mans. Race cars from Porsche have contested Le Mans every year since 1951. The reward for this incredible stamina (Porsche is the only marque to have competed for 63 years without a break) is a raft of records, including 16 overall wins and 102 class victories to 2013. The sporting competition and success at the top echelon of racing in one of the world’s most famous arenas is as much a part of Porsche as the number combination 911. After a number of class wins in the early fifties with the 550, the first time on the podium in the overall classification came in 1958 with the 718 RSK clinching third place. -

Classic DMT CA36a Opel Calibra DMT/ITC 1996 - Hockenheimring #9 - Manuel Reuter Opel LotusCalibra 72 The Opel Calibra V6 is a racing car designed to take part in the German DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft), the German Tourism Car Championship that at the time was the technical pinnacle for touring cars. Racing was restricted to Class 1 (first division or D1) cars. The regulation mandated a maximum capacity of 2,5 liters and a maximum of 6 cylinders, derived from approved models and produced in at least 25,000 specimens. Rules also allowed dramatic changes to the car’s motor and chassis, provided that the body shape was maintained. Opel entered the last race of 1993 as a test for the real début, which took place the following year with a car which was ready to compete against Alfa Romeo and Mercedes. In 1996, when the championship had already changed its name to ITC, Opel managed to win both the driver’s and the constructor’s championship titles. This car reproduces the official number 9 car with which Manuel Reuter raced the Hockenheimring race in 1995. But a victory in its home round at the Norisring has been missing on its tally of success since 2002. Therefore, Audi Sport, the drivers and the teams are particularly motivated before the season’s pinnacle event and the only city street race on the DTM calendar to be held on the weekend of June 27 to 29. From the second-longest to the shortest circuit on the calendar: Following the round in Hungary, the DTM, on racing in the heart of Nuremberg, is returning to Germany. The Audi locations Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm are only 80 and 140 kilometers away from the circuit, which makes the only city street race in the series a double home round for the Audi squad. As in the past years, far more than 100,000 spectators are expected to turn out on the weekend. The characteristics of the Norisring are unique in the world of race tracks. Two long straights, two hairpin turns, a chicane – all on a distance of 2,300 meters, surrounded by concrete walls and high grandstands made of stone. -

By achieving the one-two-three triumph at Zandvoort at the end of August defending champion Audi has made up 49 points in a single race and is now just five points behind Mercedes-Benz in the manufacturers’ standings. In the drivers’ standings, as well, nothing is impossible. With a victory at at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben (September 14 to 16), Audi racer Edoardo Mortara (Audi Sport Team Rosberg), in the best case, could narrow the gap to leader of the standings Gary Paffett (Mercedes-Benz) to nine points. Since its return with a manufacturer’s commitment in the 2004 season Audi has won five of the eight DTM races at Oschersleben. Last year, the brand clinched a one-two-three result with a record advantage. Mattias Ekström put a proud distance of 42.167 seconds between himself and his immediate rivals – a result that had never before been seen in the DTM since its re-launch in 2000. Most of the Audi drivers are looking forward to the East-German circuit with similarly eager anticipation as they most recently did to the dune circuit at Zandvoort, as every one of them associates a special highlight with Oschersleben. -

The development of promising talented drivers enjoys a long tradition at BMW Motorsport. In 2014 a new multi-level GT junior concept had been introduced: the BMW Motorsport Junior Programme. This realignment saw BMW Motorsport shift its development of young drivers back to the GT and touring car sector. In Formula racing the concept bore fruit for many years in Formula BMW and the Formula BMW Talent Cup and kick-started the racing career of many successful drivers like Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg and Nico Hülkenberg. The focus is on GT and touring car drivers who already have some racing experience. Outings in the BMW M235i Racing are an integral part of the comprehensive training programme. As well as race starts and test drives, intensive theory courses dealing with fitness and PR are planned, as are mental and simulator training. The potential candidates for this year’s class were put to the test in a shootout in the BMW M235i Racing in Dijon on 10th/11th March. A decision as to which of the young drivers showed the most potential is made by a jury of experts, headed by BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. BMW works driver Dirk Adorf will act as a mentor for the junior programme. At the end of the year, the most successful BMW Motorsport Junior of the season will be given the opportunity to continue his training for a second year in a higher racing category. -

From the adventure in Moscow the DTM is now moving on to the Eifel. The race at the Nürburgring ranks among the classic events on the calendar. The DTM has seen numerous gripping races there, exotic premieres like a night-time qualifying session, plus seven Audi victories in total since the comeback in 2000. The proximity to the famous Nordschleife and the enthusiasm of the fans make the round in the Eifel a highlight of the season again and again. This is particularly true for the Audi drivers Mike Rockenfeller and Timo Scheider, who grew up near the circuit and for whom the Nürburgring is thus their home track. ‘Rocky’ has the chance of making another pinpoint landing in the battle for the title in front of many friends and fans. -

On its European tour, the DTM will stop on the outskirts of the British capital on May 18 and 19. Following the disappointing season opener, the Audi squad is dying for rectification and in pursuit of this aim is also banking on newcomer Jamie Green, who will be contesting his first ‘home round’ for Audi at Brands Hatch. The first race of the new season showed that the fans are experiencing even more action, overtaking maneuvers and moments of surprise this year due to option tires and a rear wing flap (DRS) that can be adjusted by the driver on the track. Now the fans and the drivers are equally eager to see what effect the innovations will have on the 1.929-kilometer, and thus shortest, circuit on the DTM calendar, and how the relative strengths will pan out on this race track with its unique characteristics. Audi Sport and the Audi Sport Teams Abt Sportsline, Phoenix and Rosberg are tackling the event at Brands Hatch with high motivation. Although Timo Scheider, on clinching the pole position at Hockenheim, set an initial exclamation mark the eight drivers clearly stayed below their potential in the race with position six as the best Audi result and only one more position in the points. -
