Full Court PRESS The OFFICIAL Newsletter

of the BQJBC Edition #2

Inside this Issue FROM THE SIDELINE Comp Wrap-Up Courtside Comments Queensland welcomes you to another exciting edition of “Full Court Team Changes Press”. Inside this edition you will find the new item “Courtside Comments” where we Tribunal & Complaints review areas of the game that we receive a number of queries on and “Match-Ups” Corner where 4 players from various age groups, divisions and Associations are profiled. Player Match-Ups Also in this edition is the regular column of the “Tribunals and Complaints Corner”. I Movers & Shakers am focusing on this column as this season we have seen an increase in the number of reports and complaints submitted on inappropriate behaviour from those involved in many areas of our game. In line with Basketball Queensland’s relationship with True Sport Lives Here please note this inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated.

The True Sport Lives Here initiative is all about encouraging positive behaviour in junior sporting environments. Children, parents, spectators, officials, coaches and volunteers can all make a positive difference, so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of sport in their community. This is what all involved in the BQJBC should be aiming to do.

On another note, I have been receiving a number of phone calls from parents asking various questions regarding the BQJBC. Please be advised that all information for the BQJBC can be found on the Basketball Queensland website by clicking Junior Competitions / BQJBC on the left menu bar. Here you will find draws, venue addresses, the BQJBC Parent and Player Handbook, Calendar and Rules. If you cannot find the information you are after please contact your Association’s delegate who will be able to assist you.

Lastly I would like to take this opportunity to announce the venues for both the Wildcard Challenge and the BQJBC Grand Finals. The Wildcard Challenge will be hosted by the Gold Coast Association at Carrara Indoor Stadium on the 15th of March and the BQJBC Grand Finals will be hosted by Northside Wizards at the Sports Centre, Boondall on the 28th of March. Thank you to all Associations who submitted nominations and congratulations to Gold Coast and Northside.

Melinda Campbell, Competition Manager

COMPETITION WRAP-UP The BQJBC Season recommenced with Round 7 on the 24th of January 2009. Although this was a week earlier than usual many teams showed they were keen to get back into it; as some games that determined who would play in the Swap-over challenge went right down to the wire.

At the conclusion of Round 7, of the 24 teams who were eligible for the Swap-over Challenge 17 teams took up the opportunity to test themselves against the bottom placed Premier League / Southern Cup teams for their chance to change divisions and try their luck against the best. Of the 17 teams 7 were victorious which resulted in the change of divisions. Those who changed division and their results were as follows:

• U12 Boys – Redlands moved to Premier League after defeating RB Seahawks 89-23 • U12 Girls – Redlands moved to Premier League after defeating SW Metro 38-15 • U16 Boys – SD Spartans move to Premier League after defeating Bris Silver 79-56 • U18 Boys – Maroochy move to Premier League after defeating SD Titans 82-60 • U18 Girls – Redlands moved to Premier League after defeating Ips Force 66-59 • U14 Boys – Toowoomba moved to Sthn Cup after a no contest from Nside Wiz 2 • U16 Girls – Nside Wizards moved to Sthn Cup after defeating Redlands 64-35

In moving up a division these teams needed to step up their game and most have already displayed they can do it by winning at least one game in their new competition. Special mentions must go to Redlands in the U12 Boys who have won 2 from 3 in the new competition beating third placed Brisbane in one of these games and SD Spartans in the U16 Boys who have also won 2 from 3 in their new competition.

With the Swap-over Challenge now behind us and with only four rounds remaining in the competition many teams are now firmly focused on ensuring they have a spot in the finals. Whilst in some competitions the current top few teams appear safe for the finals, in others there are a number of teams who are still in with a shot. Some close competitions can be seen in the U12 Girls Premier League with only 1 point separating 4th to 7th, U14 Boys Premier League with 1 point separating 3rd – 6th and the U20 Men with 6 teams in the running for the finals.

Basketball Queensland wishes all teams the best of luck for the remaining rounds of the competition and hope you achieve both your individual and team goals for the season.

TRIBUNAL & COMPLAINTS CORNER

In the 2008-09 BQJBC Season Basketball Queensland has seen an increase in both reports being made and formal complaints being lodged. With the BQJBC being about Junior Sport the recent behaviour of a few involved, albeit rare is very disappointing at a junior level.

To date Basketball Queensland has now conducted 5 tribunals for the BQJBC. The two most recent tribunals held in February were as follows: • Player suspended for two weeks for Disputing the Decision of a Referee and Offensive Language • Parent / Spectator banned from court area of 1 BQJBC Game for their child

Since recommencing the BQJBC in 2009 we have also received complaints/reports on poor parent and spectator behaviour and inappropriate behaviour of scoretable personnel and coaches. Whilst some instances may not warrant a tribunal it is important to note that these incidents are recorded and kept on file.

I would like to remind all involved that young people participate for pleasure and winning is only part of the fun. The Codes of Conduct for acceptable behaviour can be found on the BQ website under About Basketball Queensland / Policies www.basketballqld.net.au TEAM CHANGES

All Team Officials are reminded that team changes must be submitted to Basketball Queensland by 10am Friday. These need to be recorded on the relevant forms issued to each Association. If teams continue to abuse this rule by manually adding players they may face losing a game on forfeit if the player is not registered or a fine as noted under “General Rules” in the BQJBCRules.

COURTSIDE COMMENTS

Due to feedback and questions from those involved in the game each newsletter will aim to focus on those topics and or rules that we have received the most queries on. In this edition we are looking at Team Officials Can and Can’t Do’s During a Game and the Shot Clock use in all divisions.

Team Officials Can and Can’t Do’s During a Game (Clarified by Ken Bill – BQJBC Referee Commissioner)

• Only the coach may stand during game time provided they remain within the team bench area. Only during time-outs can the coach can enter the playing area to address their team provided they are close the team bench area. • The assistant coach may talk to players during the game provided they remain seated. • The manager should walk behind the team bench when attending to player requirements. • The coach or assistant coach may approach the score table to request a time-out or enquire about the score, fouls, etc. • Only the coach should talk to the referees in a courteous manner and under no circumstances should they enter the playing area to do this. • The captain may talk to the referees during intervals of play to clarify rule interpretations.

24 Second Shot Clock The 24 second clock is compulsory if available (but not to be used for the Under 12 age group). The 24 second operator MUST be from the host association. This rule is in place for all divisions and not just Premier League. No rule exists in the BQJBC in which both teams in lower divisions have to agree to the shot clock being used.

With only four rounds remaining in the BQJBC, Teams to Watch is focusing on those teams who remain undefeated and the new movers and shakers. In undefeated teams we will look at those teams who are so far undefeated and how they are fairing coming into the last few rounds. In movers and shakers we will look at those teams who are proving to be a force to be reckoned with coming into the finals.

Undefeated Teams

From the 21 BQJBC Competitions 8 teams have managed to keep their undefeated records in tact. With only four rounds to go these teams will be aiming to hold up their strong performances to give them the advantage of a home semi final.

• U12 Boys Premier League – South West Metro – South West have continued to hold strong, defeating second placed Gold Coast in both of their encounters this season.

• U12 Girls Premier League – Southern Districts Spartans – After staying on top in a close competition their toughest challenge will come in their Round 11 game against Maroochydore, who they narrowly beat by 3 points in Round 4.

• U14 Boys Premier League – Logan Thunder – Logan appears to be the strongest of the undefeated teams with a point’s percentage of 212.50%.

• U18 Boys Premier League – Brisbane Capitals – with their closest winning margin being 14 points Brisbane are in good shape for the up and coming finals.

• U18 Girls Premier League – Gold Coast Waves – Gold Coast have continued to dominate the U18 Girls Competition beating second placed Spartans in both games this season.

• U14 Girls Southern Cup – Toowoomba – with 11 teams in the competition Toowoomba performed well to beat all 10 opposing teams, even beating second placed Northside by 20 points.

• U16 Girls Southern Cup – Caboolture Suns – In their last two games Caboolture have only just managed to hold on for a win, defeating 5th placed Northside by 2 points and 4th placed Toowoomba by 1 point.

• U18 Boys Southern Cup – Brisbane Silver – with their game against Maroochydore being declared a draw and Maroochydore now moving to Premier League, Brisbane will be aiming up for some tough games in Round 12 and 13 against third placed Movers & Shakers

In the first three games of the latter part of the season we have seen some teams hit some great form and keep their finals dreams alive.

U12 Age Groups • As a result of Redlands now being in Premier League in the U12 Boys Competi- tion, Caboolture Suns have taken hold of the Southern Cup competition with some great winning margins and beating former Premier League team, Runaway Bay by 18 points. • In the U12 Girls Southern Cup Competition after dropping down from Premier League South West Metro are putting it to all other teams, with a massive 92-20 win over second placed Toowoomba.

Under 14 Age Groups • With Toowoomba now in Southern Cup, Gold Coast Breakers are coming to the forefront in the U14 Boys Challenge Cup. Their only loss had been to Toowoomba and with them now out of the picture Gold Coast is putting in consistent performances from week to week.

Under 16 Age Groups • In the U16 Girls Premier League Southern Districts Spartans shook up the competition beating first placed Logan Thunder and second placed South West Metro in their Round 8 and 9 games. • In the U16 Boys Southern Cup former Premier League side Brisbane Silver have been winning their games by at least 20 points. However, they may face some tough competition in the final round game against Caboolture who are the only team to have beaten Runaway Bay, winning by 10 points in their Round 9 match up. • After moving to Southern Cup from Challenge Cup Northside Wizards in the U16 Girls Competition will be looking for a strong finish in their last 5 games. Currently sitting in 5th spot they are still in with a chance to knock over Toowoomba and secure a spot in the semi finals.

Under 18 Age Groups • After a tough start to the season in the U18 Boys Southern Cup with only one win from four games, Runaway Bay have bounced back and have not suffered a loss since their Round 5 game to Brisbane Silver. With their next match up being Brisbane in Round 12 Runaway Bay will be looking to bounce back from this 4 point loss and put themselves in a great position for the finals.
