Transitions, Tribulations & Triumphs Third Annual Conference South Asian Studies Association University of Central Florida Fairwinds Alumni Center Orlando, Florida April 3-5, 2009 Distinguished Achievement Honorees Anil Deshpande Harold A. Gould Plenary Session Speakers Vivek Wadhwa Ambassador Arun K. Singh Laurie L. Patton Featured Guests Arun Sharma David Verquist Rinku Singh Dinesh Patel A Warm Sunshine State Welcome SASA. Two years age we met as the South Asian Studies Alliance, SASA, a project of Asian Studies on the Pacific Coast (ASPAC). For years ASPAC saw declining South Asian participation at Asian Studies conferences all around the country. This made no sense so ASPAC decided to test the waters by organizing a South Asia specific conference. Overnight we became the second largest gathering of South Asianists in the U.S. Effective October 18, 2007 we became the South Asian Studies Association, a California non-profit, public benefit corporation. A couple months later the IRS granted us 501(c3) tax exempt status retroactive to the date of incorporation. SASA III. SASA II saw a 25% growth over SASA I, an extraordinary achievement in a period of shrinking budgets and overall declining conference attendance. Over the last several months, with the American economy in turmoil, conferences of all kinds have been severely hammered, SASA included. Yet, we continue to thrive. We are grateful to the University of Central Florida for their generous support and provision of space. SASA IV. Next year we will meet in the heart of Silicon Valley, Santa Clarita, California. As a 100% all volunteer organization we encourage you to join us in pulling together to make SASA IV another success.

  • Bowlers for Baseball
Bowlers for Baseball In 2008, an American named J.B. Bernstein had an idea. He worked in baseball. He wanted to find new pitchers. His idea was look for a talented cricket player. Then he would teach him to play baseball. Cricket and baseball are both very popular sports. But they are popular in different countries. Baseball is most popular in the United States. Cricket is the most popular sport in India. So J.B. began his search in India. Cricket and baseball are different sports. But both use balls and bats. One player throws a ball to another player, who is holding a bat. In baseball, the thrower is called a pitcher. In cricket, the thrower is called a bowler. You need special skills and practice to be a good pitcher (or bowler). J.B. created a reality TV show. It was called The Million Dollar Arm. His show filmed all over India. Each contestant got to throw a baseball at a target. To win, you had to hit the target by throwing the ball faster than anyone else. The reward was $100,000. The winner could try to win $1 million in a bonus round. 2017 Reading Is Fundamental • Content and art created by Simone Ribke Bowlers for Baseball Rinku Singh won the grand prize. Dinesh Patel came in second place. J.B. helped them move to the U.S. He trained them as pitchers. J.B. hoped they would find spots on a Major League Baseball (MLB) team. The idea of training bowlers to be pitchers was a new one.

Minor League Transactions: Sept. 26-Oct. 2 • The first wave of free agents entered the marketplace on Oct. 1 as 43 players elected free agency, the majority of them under Article XX(D) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. It reads in part: “Any player who has at least three years of major league service, or who qualified as a “Super Two” player . and whose contract is assigned outright to a minor league club may elect, in lieu of accepting such assignment, to become a free agent. In the event that such a player with at least three years of major league service does not elect free agency in lieu of accepting such assignment, he may elect free agency between the end of the then current major league season and the next following Oct. 15, unless such player is returned to a major league roster prior to making such election.” • The recalls in this installment are paperwork moves owing to the fact that, with the minor league season and playoffs concluded, players can no longer be sent on optional assignments. According to MLR 11(b)4 “A Major League Club may recall a player not to report after the conclusion of the championship season of the Minor League Club to which the player is on optional assignment but no later than October 1” Arizona Diamondbacks Signed: RHP Seth Lintz (Laredo (American Association)), RHP Dustin Loggins (Kansas City (American Association)), RHP Jacob Roberts (Bridgeport (Atlantic)), LHP Sean Mahley (Schaumburg (Frontier)), OF Dan Bowman (Lake Erie (Frontier)), OF Steve McQuail (Schaumburg (Frontier)) Elected free agency:
