  • SOVIET LIGHT on the COLONIES by LEONARD BARNES Maps and Diagrams by J
THE AUTHOR Leonard Barnes was educated at St. Paul’s School and University College, Oxford. He served in the infantry on the Western Front, 1914-19. On demobilisation it occurred to him to wonder what the war had been about, and what its causation was. So sprouted his interest in imperialism. To test the imperialist hypothesis, lie entered the Colonial Office in 1921, and there helped to deal with the affairs of Ceylon, Mauritius, St. Helena, the West Indies, the East African depend- encies and the South African High Commission. In 1925, wishing to supplement this paper knowledge by direct acquaintance with conditions on the spot, he set sail for Africa, where he lived for the next seven years, partly as a settler and partly as a leader-writer for the Natal Witness, the Cape Times and the Johannesburg Star. Some of the fruits of this experience are recorded in Caliban in Africa (1930) and Zulu Paraclete (1935). During 1930-31 he investigated social conditions in the half-forgotten territories of Basuto- land, Swaziland and the Bechuanaland Protectorate, publishing his findings in The New Boer War (1932). In these years he also made visits to the Rhodesias, Tanganyika and Kenya. The general study of colonial questions, especially in their relation to the problem of world peace, was continued in a series of writings, The Duty of Empire (1935), The Future of Colonies (1936), Skeleton of the Empire (1937), and Empire or Democracy? (1939). He visited the U.S.S.R. in 1938. SOVIET LIGHT ON THE COLONIES BY LEONARD BARNES Maps and Diagrams BY J.

  • The Harp in Jazz and American Pop Music Megan A. Bledsoe A
The Harp in Jazz and American Pop Music Megan A. Bledsoe A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts University of Washington 2012 Reading Committee: Donna Shin, Chair Valerie Muzzolini Gordon Áine Heneghan Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Harp Performance Bledsoe - DMA Harp Performance ©Copyright 2012 Megan A. Bledsoe 2 Bledsoe - DMA Harp Performance University of Washington Abstract The Harp in Jazz and American Pop Music Megan A. Bledsoe Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Assistant Professor of Flute Donna Shin, Chair Instrumental Performance, School of Music The harp has endured a tenuous relationship with the genres of jazz and American popular music throughout history. While a few harpists have enjoyed successful and significant careers in these fields, the harp is largely absent from mainstream jazz and American pop. The purpose of this dissertation is to ascertain a definitive cause for such exclusion and use this information to identify a feasible path toward further integration of the harp in jazz and American pop music. This paper examines the state of the harp in jazz and American pop from various angles, including historical perspective, analytical assessment, and a study which compares harpists’ improvisational abilities to those of their mainstream jazz instrumentalist counterparts. These evaluations yield an encompassing view of the harp’s specific advantages and detriments in the areas of jazz and American pop. The result of this research points to a need for specialization among harpists, particularly in defining new styles. It is evident that harpists’ careers generally necessitate a working knowledge of various styles of music.

  • After a Little Bit of Close Listening to This Relatively New Compilation I Decided
Working My Way Back To You (2011) - Audio CD by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons Rhino (UK) BGJXT8 After a little bit of close listening to this relatively new compilation I decided it made no sense to compare these latest issue masters against those mastered to CD before 2000. The sound is so different that there is no point. It is clear that these tracks are also in some cases not the original single versions. Close listening shows the differences. And - in almost all cases these tracks are noted in the booklet (in)correctly as "200x Remastered LP version" – they are neither “Remastered from LP” nor bear any resemblance to a certain “LP version”. Maybe this review and the detailed track notes below will aid the listening experience for fans who have once again “shelled out” on yet another compilation. You’ll at least see that this is, in the main, a new listening experience. It should be read with reference to our ‘Sound Evaluation Guide’ web page which can be accessed via the CD Discography ‘main page’ on the www.seasonally.co.uk web-site. "2006 Remastered LP version" should mean that it's source is the 2006 "Definitive Pop Collection" US DoCD R2 74110 , while "2007 Remastered LP version" means as a source the 2007 "Jersey Beat" US box set R2 74852 . Both notes/remarks are in fact nonsense. Similar mixes are used, but almost all tracks have undergone major "improvement" through further sound enhancement using EQ tweaks, compressors and limiters. Collectors among us might own both mentioned CD versions, the "Jersey Beat" box and the "Definitive Pop Collection", so they can compare themselves.

  • The Brown Dirt Cowboy' Sold 1.4 Million Copies in the First Four Days
The confusion at Private Stock is well illustrated by the two very different album covers to the same album. On the left the US album cover and right the UK (unreleased) album of which around 200 copies appeared . the Brown Dirt Cowboy’ sold 1.4 million copies in the first four days of its release in the USA.. Walter Yetnikof of CBS group informed press around this time that “if an artist can only sell 100,000 records….then this company is not interested in pursuing that artist. We are looking for the major, major breakthroughs” Frankie Valli’s plans had been put in place earlier in the year to produce a new ‘solo’ album with Charles Calello arranging. The album ‘ Lady Put The Light Out’ PS7002 was issued only in the USA even though designed to launch his ‘solo’ career. Charles Calello said of the al- bum …”’Lady Put The Light Out’ was mostly Frankie. Frankie started taking more con- trol. He also picked most of the songs. Crewe was in a serious accident around that time and I don't think Frankie wanted Gaudio to produce him because Gaudio was ‘cold’ .” “He hadn't produced a ‘solo’ hit for him in almost 8 years” (He had also failed to generate any hits on the ‘Valli’ album a year before, although this was down to poor promo- tion) “… and Frankie had had three hits in a row in 1976 with other producers. Maybe he felt it was time for him to do his own thing. The key song on that album was "Native New Yorker." However, it wasn't a hit by Frankie, it was a hit by another group on RCA, Odyssey.
