Bulk Rate U.S. Postage PAID ff>ermit No.320 Newark, DE. Friday. April6. 1979 By DEBORAH PETIT MIDDLETOWN, Pa.,- With a potential core melt-down now greatly reduced, officials at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Reactor Site are turning their attention to the pro blems of cleaning up radioactive substances left by the re cent reactor accident. Upon analysis of the extent of damage incurred in the mishap and the level of radioactive contamination left in the reactor, experts will determine the fate of the Three Mile site. An evaluation of the costs involved will leave the officials with the options of either refurbishing or decommissioning the plant. Both of which would require large amounts of time and money. · The projected time for complete decontamination of the reactor now stands at least one to two years. Additional time beyond ~hat estimate would be required to bring the plant back to operational levels. Cost estimates for the refurbishment of the reactor can not be determined from present data. The costs and time involved in decommissioning the site, however, can be more accurately determined from previous studies done by the Nuclear Regulatory Commis sion (NRC). Most data points to a dismantling cost estimate of roughly Review photo by Andy Cline 5 percent to 10 percent of the original construction costs. MODERN DRUMMER VOL. 4 NO. 2 FEATURES: NEIL PEART As one of rock's most popular drummers, Neil Peart of Rush seriously reflects on his art in this exclusive interview. With a refreshing, no-nonsense attitude. Peart speaks of the experi- ences that led him to Rush and how a respect formed between the band members that is rarely achieved. Peart also affirms his belief that music must not be compromised for financial gain, and has followed that path throughout his career. 12 PAUL MOTIAN Jazz modernist Paul Motian has had a varied career, from his days with the Bill Evans Trio to Arlo Guthrie. Motian asserts that to fully appreciate the art of drumming, one must study the great masters of the past and learn from them. 16 FRED BEGUN Another facet of drumming is explored in this interview with Fred Begun, timpanist with the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington, D.C. Begun discusses his approach to classical music and the influences of his mentor, Saul Goodman. 20 INSIDE REMO 24 RESULTS OF SLINGERLAND/LOUIE BELLSON CONTEST 28 COLUMNS: EDITOR'S OVERVIEW 3 TEACHERS FORUM READERS PLATFORM 4 Teaching Jazz Drumming by Charley Perry 42 ASK A PRO 6 IT'S QUESTIONABLE 8 THE CLUB SCENE The Art of Entertainment ROCK PERSPECTIVES by Rick Van Horn 48 Odd Rock by David Garibaldi 32 STRICTLY TECHNIQUE The Technically Proficient Player JAZZ DRUMMERS WORKSHOP Double Time Coordination by Paul Meyer 50 by Ed Soph 34 CONCEPTS ELECTRONIC INSIGHTS Drums and Drummers: An Impression Simple Percussion Modifications by Rich Baccaro 52 by David Ernst 38 DRUM MARKET 54 SHOW AND STUDIO INDUSTRY HAPPENINGS 70 A New Approach Towards Improving Your Reading by Danny Pucillo 40 JUST DRUMS 71 STAFF: EDITOR-IN-CHIEF: Ronald Spagnardi FEATURES EDITOR: Karen Larcombe ASSOCIATE EDITORS: Mark Hurley Paul Uldrich MANAGING EDITOR: Michael Cramer ART DIRECTOR: Tom Mandrake The feature section of this issue represents a wide spectrum of modern percussion with our three lead interview subjects: Rush's Neil Peart; PRODUCTION MANAGER: Roger Elliston jazz drummer Paul Motian and timpanist Fred Begun.

(Excuse Me) By Heather Burton —Aud-Cont. and Maureen Lewis —H&HS Photo by Janice Hughes Imagine a department of over 750 employees having to track costs for grants using individual Excel spreadsheets for each grant. In that same world employees must often record their time and activities in two or three different systems. Tracking the status of a payment to a vendor usually involves phone calls or even a trip to the Auditor’s office. Sound familiar? This is the world that the current financial system supports. Now imagine something better…. ■ It all started two years ago with a needs assessment. The Auditor-Controllor’s Office met with many county departments to determine what should be included in any new system. Once all of the feedback was in, it became clear that the county was ready to move from its current fragmented approach to a new, more flexible system Seated, L to R: Heidi Davaloo (DPW), Margaret Bohan (DPW) Standing, L to R: Francie Hubert (Aud- Cont.), Supranee Mai (Aud-Cont.), Cloann Di Grazia (Aud-Cont.), Jim Toth (IST), Heather Burton that would combine financials and payroll, grant and project (Aud-Cont.), Gordon Haberfelde (IST), Samantha Klein (CAO), and Danny Briones (Aud-Cont.) management, benefits administration, and asset management. …continued on page 11 both women share Hair-Razing the beauty of what lay beneath their hair. • 76 the Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow – Bring Back the Dream October 12Th, 2011
76 The Pot of Gold at the end of the Rainbow – Bring back the dream October 12th, 2011 Before I come to the title of this post I must conclude the last. In my last post I said there was money around to pay for things that the Government never puts its hands on, namely the value of the land we work on. I showed that this is an old idea whose time has actually begun to arrive in some parts of the world. Scroll back to the last post and you will see what I mean. In this post I want to talk about how we pay for health and how we pay for education, one tax too few and one tax too many -the tax on our gifted and talented students if they are successful and have to repay their student loans. First Health. There are two questions when it comes to Health. How do you deliver it? And, how do you pay for it? Politicians make the huge mistake of continually to address the first, but never addressing the second. Because of that, they never get the first one totally right. Let me explain. We need health provision from the day we are born to the day we die, and most of it at the beginning and end and of our lives, but an important part of it during our working lives to make sure we can earn a living. But we pay for it only during our working lives, in our National Insurance contributions and income tax.
