CHESTERTON’S CONCEPT OF HOLINESS IN DAILY LIFE A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED IN CANDIDACY FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY BY MARTINE EMMA THOMPSON LONDON 2014 1 Abstract The term holiness and the concept of sainthood have come under much scrutiny in recent times, both among theologians and the modern laity. There is a sense that these terms or virtues belong to an age long past, and that they are remote and irrelevant to modern believers; that there is the ‘ideal’ but that it is not seriously attainable in a secular, busy modern world with all its demands. Moreover, many believe that sainthood is accessible only to the very few, attained by those who undergo strict ascetic regimes of self-denial and rejection of a ‘normal’ life. However, these conceptions of holiness are clearly at odds with, and may be challenged by others, including the Roman Catholic Church’s teaching of a ‘universal call to holiness’. One of the aims of this thesis is to address those misconceptions with particular focus upon the theological concepts of the writer G.K. Chesterton and his understanding of holiness in the ordinary. Having been a popular writer and journalist, it has proved difficult for some academics and laypeople to accept Chesterton as a theologian. Furthermore, Chesterton considered himself to be an ordinary man, he did not belong to a religious order or community, and yet he was a theological writer who formulated an original conception of holiness in the ordinary. -

Chesterton and Parody Michael Ronald Shallcross Abstract This thesis constitutes the first study of G.K. Chesterton’s status as a theorist and practitioner of parody. Employing a combination of original archival research, historical contextualisation, theoretical analysis, and textual close reading, I demonstrate that an extensive range of parodic strategies permeate Chesterton’s diverse output, from his detective fiction, to his nonsense verse, journalism, novels, and critical essays. I particularly focus upon elaborating the affinity of Chesterton’s work with the literary and cultural theory of Mikhail Bakhtin, in relation to the latter’s principle of dialogism, and his account of the parodic basis of the carnivalesque. -

Father Brown Mysteries Chesterton, G.K. G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936), British author, essayist, and theologian, was also an accomplished mystery writer. He produced between 1910 and 1935 a number of short stories (collected into five volumes) featuring the unlikely sleuth and Roman Catholic priest Father Brown. The humble priest’s unassuming air, masking a profound knowledge of human nature, enabled him to solve many a mystery. The Father Brown stories are available from the New Bern-Craven County public Library in a one-volume edition. Audio tapes are also available for The Innocence of Father Brown and the Wisdom of Father Brown. APPENDIX A: G. K. CHESTERTON’S “THE BLUE CROSS” (1910) In assessing whether this story has a Gestalt shift structure, it is imperative to keep in mind that with it Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936) sought to launch a new detective. During the first decade of the twentieth cen- tury, various authors, influenced by the extraordinary success of Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories, explored writing detective fiction. As a fan of detective stories and a prolific author, Chesterton was among those aware of this opportunity. In fact, in 1904 he had already made an attempt to enter this market, the chief result of which was a book he published that year titled The Club of Queer Trades.1 In 1910, Chesterton decided to try this market again. His goal was to create a detective who could compete with Holmes’s remarkable array of talents and long list of successes, despite being a very different type of person using quite different techniques. This presented no small challenge. But more than this, Chesterton’s great con- cern throughout his life was to champion various religious, philosophical, and political causes. Doyle also favored various causes, but refrained from burdening Holmes with these issues; for example, Holmes never champi- oned spiritualism, whereas Doyle spent much of the last decade of his life writing and lecturing on spiritualist claims. Rethinking GK Chesterton
Something to Chew On: Rethinking G.K. Chesterton Review Essay Michael Shallcross. Rethinking G.K. Chesterton and Literary Modernism: Parody, Performance, and Popular Culture, Routledge, 2018, $132 (hardcover), 296 pp. In 2006, famous Yale professor Harold Bloom, who defied trendy scholarship by endorsing the Western canon, published a collection of essays about G.K. Chesterton. Written by twenty different scholars, the essays are preceded by an introduction in which Bloom proclaims his affection for Chesterton’s The Man Who Was Thursday (1908) while also denouncing Chesterton’s anti- Semitism. “By 1930,” Bloom writes, “Chesterton was praising Mussolini, and he went on later to blame the Jews for Hitler’s ascension to power” (GKC 2). This tactic, deriding Chesterton while affirming his powerful imagi- nation, serves as a microcosm of the reactions Chesterton generated during his own lifetime. Such ambiguous, if not downright hostile, responses to Chesterton are key to Rethinking G.K. Chesterton and Literary Modernism (2018). Its author, Michael Shallcross, suggests that even Chesterton’s anti-semitism is ambiguous, quoting a point made by Margaret Sanovan in 1977: “By the standards of the time his anti-Semitism was very mild—but why was it there at all?” (Shallcross 185). Her final question, of course, is imperative for any discussion about a famous Christian like Chesterton. Though Shallcross never mentions Bloom’s essay collection and says very little about Ches- terton’s Christianity, Rethinking Chesterton enables readers to take issue with Bloom’s conclusion that “Chesterton cannot be cleansed of his Fascist leanings” (GKC 2). e149 e150 VII Acknowledging that Chesterton was influenced by the bigotry of both his brother Cecil and his friend Hilaire Belloc, Shallcross informs us that Chesterton repudiated Germany’s “quite unproved [theory of] racial supremacy”—in 1914, no less: long before he explicitly denounced Hitler’s treatment of Jews (Shallcross 195). -

The Incredulity of Father Brown G. K. Chesterton, (1926) ONE: The Resurrection of Father Brown THERE was a brief period during which Father Brown enjoyed, or rather did not enjoy, something like fame. He was a nine days’ wonder in the newspapers; he was even a common topic of controversy in the weekly reviews; his exploits were narrated eagerly and inaccurately in any number of clubs and drawing - rooms, especially in America. Incongruous and indeed incredible as it may seem to any one who knew him, his adventures as a detective were even made the subject of short stories appearing in magazines. Strangely enough, this wandering limelight struck him in the most obscure, or at least the most remote, of his many places of residence. He had been sent out to officiate, as something between a missionary and a parish priest, in one of those sections of the northern coast of South America, where strips of country still cling insecurely to European powers, or are continually threatening to become independent republics, under the gigantic shadow of President Monroe. The population was red and brown with pink spots; that is, it was Spanish - American, and largely Spanish - American - Indian, but there was a considerable and increasing infiltration of Americans of the northern sort - Englishmen, Germans, and the rest. And the trouble seems to have begun when one of these visitors, very recently landed and very much annoyed at having lost one of his bags, approached the first building of which he came in sight - which happened to be the mission - house and chapel attached to it, in front of which ran a long veranda and a long row of stakes, up which were trained the black twisted vines, their square leaves red with autumn. -

Chesterton To Lucian Oldershaw The Absence of Mr Glass The consulting-rooms of Dr Orion Hood, the eminent criminologist and specialist in certain moral disorders, lay along the sea-front at Scarborough, in a series of very large and well-lighted french windows, which showed the North Sea like one endless outer wall of blue-green marble. In such a place the sea had something of the monotony of a blue-green dado: for the chambers themselves were ruled throughout by a terrible tidiness not unlike the terrible tidiness of the sea. It must not be supposed that Dr Hood’s apartments excluded luxury, or even poetry. These things were there, in their place; but one felt that they were never allowed out of their place. Luxury was there: there stood upon a special table eight or ten boxes of the best cigars; but they were built upon a plan so that the strongest were always nearest the wall and the mildest nearest the window. A tantalus containing three kinds of spirit, all of a liqueur excellence, stood always on this table of luxury; but the fanciful have asserted that the whisky, brandy, and rum seemed always to stand at the same level. Poetry was there: the left-hand corner of the room was lined with as complete a set of English classics as the right hand could show of English and foreign physiologists. But if one took a volume of Chaucer or Shelley from that rank, its absence irritated the mind like a gap in a man’s front teeth. -

He published works on philosophy, ontology, poetry, plays, journalism, public lectures and debates, literary and art criticism, biography, Christian apologetics, and fiction, including fantasy and detective fiction. Chesterton has been called the "prince of paradox". Time magazine, in a review of a biography of Chesterton, observed of his writing style: "Whenever possible Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegories—first carefully turning them inside out." For example, Chesterton wrote "Thieves respect property. They merely wish the property to become their property that they may more perfectly respect it." Chesterton is well known for his reasoned apologetics and even some of those who disagree with him have recognized the universal appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton, as a political thinker, cast aspersions on both progressivism and conservatism, saying, "The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected." Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox" Christian, and came to identify such a position more and more with Catholicism, eventually converting to Roman Catholicism
