The funeral and kevorah was in Israel and shiva began on Thursday through Monday morning. His son .Yitzie, will sit shiva at his home, 560 South Forest Drive, Teaneck. He can be reached by phone at 347-433-4276 (his wife’s cell). Introduction Rosh Chodesh means “head of the month,” and refers to the minor Jewish holiday that occurs at the beginning of each new month in the Hebrew calendar. The ancient Rabbis interpreted the Biblical verses Exodus 12:1-12:2 as requiring that the new month be determined by eyewitness testimony. Just as God showed Moses and the high priest Aaron the new moon, witnesses were supposed to testify before the judges of the Sanhedrin, the Great Court in Jerusalem, that they had seen the new moon. The officiants at the Holy Temple would then mark the occasion with a sacrifice, feasting, and fanfare. After the destruction of the Second Temple, this eyewitness procedure was replaced by astronomical and mathematical calculations that were used to determine when each month began. Bonfires were lit on the mountains between Jerusalem and Babylonia to announce the arrival of the new moon. In later years, as witnesses and messengers were replaced with a fixed calendar, few Rosh Chodesh rituals remained, although it continued to be marked liturgically by the birkat ha-chodesh (or, in Ashkenazic pronunciation, birkas hakhoydesh), the blessing of the month, which is recited on the Saturday before each new month begins. Because of associations between women and the moon, Rosh Chodesh has long been considered a special holiday for women. This association was taken up by Jewish feminists in the 1970s as they innovated to create Jewish rituals that affirmed women’s strength and created empowering female community within Jewish ritual life.

Imagine an 8 year-old boy, told to go to sleep extra-early on a particular September Saturday evening, right after Shabbat had ended, only to be woken up around midnight and shlepped to shul. Not that I hadn’t just been to shul three times already—Friday night, Shabbat morning, and, again, late Shabbat afternoon. But this was different. It was midnight. Tired men—and even some women—shuffled into shul alongside boys who could not contain their excitement at being allowed to stay up until midnight! Even better, Yeshiva the next morning (yes, we went to Yeshiva every Sunday) would start an hour later! And then the prayers began. Solemn. Intense. Musically exhilarating. Selichot. Prayers beseeching God for forgiveness. Even crying. Strange and beautiful medieval poetry chanted to Old World melodies that pierced the heart. 45 minutes later, it was over. Then, back to bed, still haunted by the eeriness of the prayers. For many years I loved Selichot. And then I didn’t. As I grew older and more mature, I was instructed to use Selichot as a vehicle for introspection—specifically, to identify the many, many, many areas in which I did not measure up to the expectations of my Rabbi/teachers (they were not shy about pointing this out to me, to us) and then to resolve to improve my…I was never really sure what I needed to do to make my teachers—and, by extension, God—happy.

    Understanding Rosh Chodesh Rosh Chodesh, the celebration of the beginning of each month in the Jewish calendar, has blossomed into a celebration of women and femininity. While Rosh Chodesh exists as a women’s holiday in traditional Jewish sources, the connection has been made much stronger with the emergence of the women’s movement, and the establishment of women’s Rosh Chodesh groups. There is no one way to celebrate Rosh Chodesh and there are no rules for establishing a Rosh Chodesh group. At the core, it should be comprised of women who gather on a monthly basis to celebrate the new month and their lives as Jewish women. The following resource guide is made to help facilitate the formation and monthly meetings of Rosh Chodesh groups on campus. History of Rosh Chodesh The Jewish Calendar Central to Judaism is the Jewish calendar. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, the Jewish calendar is lunar. Months and holidays are based on the 29 ½-day lunar cycle. While the Jewish calendar is lunar, it is also coordinated with the solar calendar. Many Jewish holidays have agricultural roots which means that they must fall during a particular season. Passover, for example, is also called Chag ha-Aviv, or the “Spring Holiday.” Sukkot marks the harvest festival and must occur during the fall. To compensate for the fact that the lunar year is 11 days shorter than the solar calendar, the Rabbis developed a way to include an extra month in the year to ensure that the months fell in their proper season. The calendar is so central to Judaism that it is the first commandment the Jews were given as a nation.
