KEY HIGHLIGHTS

1. From the Covid-19 tests run in the last 24hrs, there were six positive cases; one (1) Kenyan who is a truck conductor and 5 Tanzanian truck drivers. The Tanzanians have since been denied entry into . 2. The truck driver, to the Kenyan truck conductor mentioned above, whose test sample had been collected on 14th May 2020, had his positive results relayed to him by the Surveillance Team, on 20th May 2020, when he was at the Taveta OSBP on his way to Kenya from Moshi, Tanzania. This led to his immediate isolation by the County Rapid Response Team, while his conductor was put under mandatory quarantine. 3. The Kenyan truck conductor, who tested positive, has since been transferred to an isolation facility. 4. These additional cases now bring to six (6), the number of confirmed cases in the county’s isolation facilities.

5. Contact tracing for the index cases is ongoing.

6. A total of 742 samples have since been collected for testing.

7. A total of 385 cases have been responded to and registered, 337 out of which were put on quarantine while 48 were managed for other Covid-19 unrelated conditions. So far 270 have been released from follow up having successfully completed 14 days of quarantine. 1 | Page

8. Covid-19 screening is still ongoing at the points of entry i.e. Manyani, Engwata and Njukini, as well as other strategic areas such as Salaita.

9. We acknowledge and still seek for more strategic partnerships and support against Covid-19 Pandemic.

1. CONFIRMED CASES The six (6) total confirmed positive cases, isolated in our county health facilities are all male aged between 25 and 45 years; two(2) are truck drivers whose samples were collected at the One-Stop-Border-Post (OSBP), One(1) is a truck-driver whose sample was collected in Mombasa, One (1) is a truck conductor whose sample was collected at the One-Stop-Border-Post (OSBP); One (1) was tested while undergoing mandatory quarantine after having entered the Country from Tanzania, while the Sixth (6) one was tested while on transit at Engwata.

2. SAMPLE COLLECTION AND TESTING A total of 742 samples were collected and taken for testing. Results for 702 samples have been received and awaiting for the remaining 40. Among the 742 samples collected, 704 were male while 38 were female.

3. CONTACT TRACING There were a number of people who came into contact with a Covid – 19 positive case in some two hotels in the County. As a result, a total of 16 contacts were traced and quarantined for 14 days and later discharged from follow up. One of the contacts was traced and quarantined in Kilifi County in coordination with the disease Surveillance coordinator. On the positive cases being managed currently, ten contacts have so far been identified.

4. SCREENING OF PASSENGERS AT ENTRY POINTS To control cross-County infections, the County established 3 screening points in its major entry points that is Njukini in Taveta, Engwata in Miasenyi and Manyani. The screening exercise was officially launched on 2nd April 2020 and it’s still on going. So far a total of 199,600 travelers have been screened and their details captured for reference and follow up. A number of vehicles have been turned away at these screening points for being on the highway without travel authorization documents.

5. QUARANTINE OF CONTACTS AND TRAVELLERS There is a Sub County Rapid Response Team (RRT) in each sub county which is responsible for responding to alerts within the Sub Counties. This is a multi- disciplinary team which comprises of the health care workers, the local administrators and the security team. They have been responding to alerts when called upon especially of travelers from other Counties who are advised to quarantine themselves. In cases where an individual fails to quarantine then they are put on mandatory quarantine.

6. STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS AND SUPORT AGAINST COVID-19 PANDEMIC • County Resource Mobilization Committee • Ministry of Health • NGAOs • UNDP (Recruitment of UNVs) • Kenya Red Cross Services • World Vision • ActionAid Kenya • Taita Taveta Human Rights Watch • KMTC • Wildlife Works • Jamia Mosque

7. ONGOING ACTIVITIES • Plans are underway to have Covid-19 holding room in each health facility. Advocacy on Covid-19 preventive measures, which include hand washing, social distancing and health education, are equally on-going • At the Sub County level, the Rapid Response Teams are conducting contact tracing as well as sensitizing the local community, including high-risk institutions such as Prisons. Surveillance is being enhanced and the screening of individuals at the entry points being done • At the county level, the County Emergency Response Team (CERT) is supporting the Sub Counties and facilities in activities geared towards Covid – 19 prevention; this includes the ongoing procurement of health commodities and equipment. The CERT is supporting community sensitization initiatives on Covid-19. • Food distribution to the vulnerable households in the county, by the County Resource Mobilization Committee. • Targeted mass testing of truck drivers is ongoing at the Taveta One-Stop- Border Point .

8. CHALLENGES • Inadequate personnel to handle both Covid-19 activities and routine health services. • Unavailability of commodities and equipment at the KEMSA and MEDS with alternate suppliers hiking prices as well as time lag in procurement due to quality checks with other suppliers. • Social distancing is still a challenge in some places like Market, boda boda stations etc. • The porous Taveta-Tanzania border resulting to unrestricted movement of people. 9 | Page
